Taking family pictures can be a fun, memorable experience that captures the heart and spirit of…read moreyour family. It can also be stressful to get your family to cooperate and get great pictures if you don't have the right professional orchestrating your photo shoot. I've used Christina Straw Photography multiple times for many reasons and couldn't be happier. I am particularly impressed with Christina's great style, technical skill, professionalism, ability to control the photo shoot, and the quality of her finished product. I love Christina's style. She gets great formal and candid shots that capture the love and personality of my family. She does a nice job in both color and black and white. Christina's technical skills with regards to color, sharpness, clarity and lighting are impressive. Many of the photos she took for me are great. My kids' skin and hair were brilliant from the golden lighting she captured. Christina is very professional and gets wonderful photos that last a lifetime. The first photo she took for me was for my daughter's birth announcement a few years ago. That picture is timeless - a beautiful black and white of my then two year old son holding his new born sister. Christina said to me, "isn't it wonderful when the stars align for that perfect photograph." I have never forgotten what she said and I am grateful to her for capturing that perfect photo (that brings up such happy memories for me) when those stars aligned. Christina knows how to put my family at ease and gets the great shots I'm looking for. As a mother of a young child she knows how to engage my children. She keeps them focused but relaxed and gets their natural smiles and personalities to shine through. She captures fantastic individual and family photographs, and she gets them before the kids lose interest. As a parent of young children that is invaluable. She is easy to work with and helps bring my creative ideas to light as well. Each photo shoot she has done for me has been unique and personal. One year I worked with Christina for my family photo shoot I wanted to take pictures in the new city in which we had recently moved. I wasn't familiar with the park but learned it was quite busy on the weekend. Even though there were many background distractions at the park Christina was still able to get some great shots. They turned out much better than I expected. I like that she helps you pick out your venue and coordinating family outfits if you need help. The next year I worked with Christina we worked together and chose a great venue. The pictures were amazing! There were so many wonderful shots with beautiful backgrounds and perfect lighting. I had a difficult time choosing only a few for our holiday card. Last year the quality of the photos she did for me were excellent. They were even better than the year before. I was so pleased with them I submitted them into a contest (with permission of course). Christina got so many wonderful compliments on her shots. Family and friends thought they were for a professional advertisement campaign from a magazine. The pictures Christina has taken of my family over the years are priceless. We easily spend money on clothes, shoes, and handbags and tend to cut corners on artistic outlets. But a great family photo shoot is totally worth it. The photos for your family memories, scrapbooks, albums and family tree are worth it. Having Christina take good quality photographs of your family is an investment you will not regret. The only difficulty is getting an appointment because she books up fast especially during the holidays. I highly recommend you call and get on her calendar as soon as you can.

She was terrible at giving directions (just turn, turn the other way, no the other way, move your hand, etc - entirely unclear) and would get mad at us when we didn't guess correctly what she meant. When we didn't pose the way she wanted, she would make sarcastic and snippy comments that made us all SO uncomfortable and made the whole shoot so awkward. And then she'd bark at you to smile! We did not get one single photo that we will ever use. I am so very sad and mad, not only that we wasted $500 but that we can't go back and get photos that we can actually use of my baby at this age again. We can never get that back. I would highly encourage you to think twice before hiring Christina if you have a baby - she absolutely does NOT know how to shoot babies. Or family groups. If you have any thoughts or opinions of your own whatsoever about what you want, she will not listen to you. When I told her what shots I wanted (which we had discussed over the phone and in email prior to the shoot) she yelled at me that she's the professional and basically I needed to shut up and do it her way because I don't know anything. I left the shoot in tears. It was truly awful. And surprise surprise, I've never seen less flattering photos of myself or my family in my entire life. There is literally not one single photo where you can see everyone's face and everyone has their eyes open! I truly believe she started taking bad photos intentionally after I didn't want to do one of her poses because even a non-professional photographer could capture at least one or two that were ok. Think twice before hiring her.

Seeing as how our wedding was in St Thomas and we were going to be flying a photographer in, I…read moreactually searched the whole country for the photographer I wanted, including NYC and LA. When I stumbled on Jackie's blog, I got literal chills. She was perfect! The best anywhere! I had never seen such genuine emotion captured so well in photos. I teared up looking at photos of people I had never met. Our whole experience with her and Matt was unbelievable. We were immediately comfortable with them. We felt as though they truly GOT us, without knowing us long at all. They are loving, empathetic humans with an uncanny ability to seek out the fleeting moments that mean the most. Our wedding was very small. We had 55 people in the islands with us for 6 days of activities. Jackie and Matt came into our small, mighty group and captured more then I even thought possible. The love, laughter and magic of the occasion JUMP off of the images they took. I have had the photos back for over a month and still can't stop looking at them every night. They told the exact story of how each person felt that day. Not a glossy, posed version of the truth, but how it actually went. It was imperfect and loud and colorful and emotional and real...and they captured it all. Also - the way they present the blog posting and the website itself might have been the best part. It was so easy to share the story and the memories with the people who weren't there and the people who were. The sharing part of all of these could have been a absolute nightmare...but their technology made it sooo easy. Even all of our professional photographer friends were highly impressed with the website and ease of downloading and sharing the images. My Yelp profile pic is one of their shots! The best decision we made for our whole wedding was to invest in Selah Photography. We feel so blessed to have found them.

We hired Maddie as our wedding photographer, and we were in love with her photos way before we ever…read morehired her. She actually did the photos for a friend's wedding, and one of the photos from that wedding was so beautiful and artistic that we fell in love instantly. I can tell you she delivered in a big way. After we hired her, she met with us for brunch, and we discussed what our wants for the day. I'll admit, I was initially shocked to see the cost for wedding photography in general when I started my wedding planning journey, but I can tell you her prices were in line with other photographers in the area. (Obviously there were a few photographers just breaking in to the business who were much cheaper, but they also didn't have the experience and talent that Maddie and some of the other more experienced photographers had.) Maddie offers an array of photo packages and options, and she offers a few fun add-ons too, so you can absolutely create a package tailored for smaller budgets. Our budget didn't allow for the beautiful custom photobooks or the most expensive package, and I never felt pressured to get the most expensive packages or extra hours. We did opt for the photobooth, which was awesome. It was a professional camera with a professional photographer, and the photos were impressive for a photobooth. (We actually shuttled a lot of the extended family members over to the photobooth for some fun photos, but also got some quality portraits from the booth too!) I've been to several weddings with photobooths, and a lot of times, they're cheaper cameras with cheesy backgrounds, but I'm telling you these photos were awesome. Additionally, they were all uploaded onto their website for everyone to download full-quality photos at their leisure Before the big day, she carefully went through all the different planned photos/group photos and made sure we had a list of all the shots we wanted, and she made them happen. I have a very large family, so there were a lot of group photos to get through. On the big day, she quickly learned the names of EVERYONE for the group photos and wrangled the groups well to keep everyone on track, which was an impressive feat in itself. I was skeptical that we'd be able to do so many group photos and keep things running on schedule, but she made it happen, and she even had time left over to throw in a few extra fun bridal party photos that we didn't get earlier in the day. Overall, the day was a blast, but Maddie made it even more fun by being our photographer. She was fun to be around, and she made my family and friends at ease when they were in front of the camera. As for the photos, I am in awe. I am a fairly self-conscious person, and I was nervous about how the photos would turn out since I've grown up always hating a majority of photos that I'm in. I can tell you I love each and every photo (even the ones where I'm very obviously crying), and it's not from over-editing or retouching. She simply had the right timing and lighting and angles EVERY SINGLE TIME. Maddie is a magician, and I would hire her over and over and over again.
