My mom is my source of all things gardening, and she told me to go to Story's. I looked up the website (which is great) to see what they had in stock. Under "fruiting plants" in nursery stock, I found what was basically a comprehensive list of all the fruit I could think of...so we just decided to head over and take our chances. When we arrived and walked around a bit, I realized that they actually HAVE pretty much everything on that comprehensive list, because this place is massive and awesome. I don't think I can possibly list all the things they've got, but I feel pretty confident saying that their selection is better than anything you might find in the surrounding area: Trees, shrubs, evergreens, bushes, perennials, herbs, succulents, conifers, flowers, vegetables, vines...you want plants, they've got the plants. They've also got all the garden supplies you need...plant food, fertilizer, seeds, pesticides, tools, a gorgeous selection of pots, and hooks, and garden gnomes, and more. I didn't know I needed netting to keep the birds from eating my blueberries, but they did, and they've got the netting you need. I should note that my mom frowns on netting your berries, as she believes we need to share with the birds...but she's just a much better person than I am.

To the people complaining about the prices; this is a small business that doesn't have corporate sponsorship or the ability to buy big box store quantities resulting in slightly higher prices, but very much improved quality. To the people complaining about the service; when I was there shopping there were only two people working, which as an adult who works in retail customer service understands, just because it's not busy inside, it doesn't mean the worker's are not busy. I highly recommend Black Horse Farm for great plants, delicious baked goods, and friendly local service. I even want to mention that when it comes to customer service, one of the employees overheard me talking about Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, and when I mentioned they didn't have any, they went to the back and got one for me that was still cooling; that's customer service. So, if you are someone who appreciates the nuance of shopping local, I can not recommend Black Horse Farm enough, but if you're a whiny adult who needs their hand held at all times while shopping, and gets offended with someone quickly answering a question while continuing to do their work (again, small staff but still lots of work to do), perhaps you should go to a corporate big box store. Me, I know where I'm going, and it's to Black Horse Farm!

While there I noted what was for sale consisted primarily of annuals and herbs but all were robust and very competitively priced. When you walk in your are immediately lifted by the brilliant color, the humidity, fragrance, and well maintained plants. The green houses are immaculate. I haven't visited NY during the October-November months in some time, so I was surprised to see this elaborate setup while driving by. The first thing Nancy said was we got to get a photo there!! So that's what we did. The photo op area is a well-built play area for kids, there is actually a slide and ladder on the backside of the man-made pumpkin, little ones can climb inside and look out through the eyes for a fun photo. There are several other photo op areas, not quite elaborate as this one that adults can join in on as well. Farmer Jon's has a unique selection of pumpkins, gords, seasonal flowers, yard art, clay and concrete sculptures, and more for sale for a reasonable price. If you're in the area I recommend stopping in to see what they have to offer.

The trees died after two weeks, they completely burnt while I followed all the instructions I was given. I called them to let them know and see what we could do about it. While the first person I spoke to was very nice, the manager Heather was not helpful at all, she did not even asked me about the type of tree, what I did to maintain. She just said there is nothing they can do. While I understand their policy, I found her rude and not understanding at all. I was not angry, not accusatory, not even asking for a refund. I won't go back and do not advise anyone to buy anything from them given their lack of good customer service and professionalism. I lost $300.
