Our daughter is graduating this weekend from DePauw university. We made a reservation for 2 rooms…read moreover a year ago. I feel bad that it took me this long to write a review. This is our 4th stay with the Doc's Inn and each stay was always amazing. The building is old and creaky but that gives it the charm. If you're looking for square and plum walls, perfect floors and doors this is not your spot. But if you want some old world charm and want to feel that you're living in your grandmother's doll house this is your spot. The furniture and china also match the overall theme. Most rooms still have a window air conditioner but we don't usually use them. On this trip our room has access to the 2nd floor roof deck. Some rooms have a king sized bed and others have smaller ones like full, so be sure to ask when you reserve. The staff are really awesome people. Katelyn and her mom are really so hospitable. It is such a pleasant stay and the conversations are great. Finally, these folks put the "breakfast" in bed and breakfast. So far we had a great rice porridge with a slice of roast beef, a green chimichurri, some sliced fried garlic, smoked tomatoes, and a fried egg. Our second breakfast was some smoked brisket with fried eggs. Then we had a homemade biscuit, bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and my daughter had the yogurt parfait. Also each morning there is always something fresh baked to nibble on. The food is amazing and we are always happy when we are smart enough to reserve early. As my youngest graduates we feel great pride and happiness but also a sense of loss for some of the great places, like docs inn, and the great people of Greencastle we will miss.

The fiance and I are driving down to Louisiana for Thanksgiving…read more After a 5 hour driving session through the rainy construction zones after a full day of work, we had enough. Naturally we looked for the closest Best Western so our furry friend could come in with us. We got our room, both took showers with the complimentary soap and shampoo that smelled great. The tissues were folded to look like a flower, which was neat... Complaint #1 - the tv in the room was either poorly wired or had bad reception. We turned on a movie to fall asleep to, and it kept cutting out the volume and picture... flashing and screaming static. So we turned it off. Complaint #2 - which is out of control of the hotel, but the guy above us must have been exercising all night with his dog. Well into 5am... rough. Breakfast was good, the usual... waffles, pastries, eggs, biscuits and gravy, bacon... Check out was easy as well. If we are in the area, we would go back...

To make matters worse, we were met with resistance when we requested to change rooms. Finally, we were moved to the second floor and as we moved our belongings, we walked by two portable dehumidifiers in the hallway. The second room was better, but we were refused clean towels when requested. We used our room towels at the pool, and when we asked for clean, dry towels we were told they did not have any. Finally, we were given 2 (for 3 people) and a bath mat. Save your money. Unless you like the smell of mold, prefer unsanitary conditions, and enjoy wasting your money, DO NOT STAY HERE.

Our wedding at Clayshire Castle was beautiful, but the experience with Douglas left us very…read moreuncomfortable. We rented the castle for our wedding weekend, including overnight accommodations for our family, and while we appreciated the unique setting, he repeatedly crossed boundaries during our stay. Throughout our wedding night, Douglas frequently entered or attempted to enter our rented spaces uninvited, including coming down to our side of the castle and asking us to turn off lights to save electricity. While I can understand wanting to conserve energy, several guests returned to their rooms after leaving lights on and found them off, which was unsettling and felt like someone had been in the room. We paid a significant amount for the venue, and it's hard to imagine that the cost of electricity would come close to what we paid for the event. The situation made us and our guests feel like our privacy wasn't being fully respected during what should have been a private and personal celebration. During the rehearsal and throughout the weekend, Douglas made several comments that felt unnecessary and intrusive. During the rehearsal, he told my husband and I to "act like you like each other" because he felt we weren't standing close enough at the altar, though there were much more appropriate ways to make that suggestion. He also repeatedly remarked on my hair being down, referencing medieval customs. The frequency of these comments over the rehearsal, wedding night, and breakfast the next morning made the interactions uncomfortable. Our parents and other guests also noticed how he spoke differently to the younger adults in our group, often in a condescending tone. During the reception, Douglas and Josephine helped clear plates as guests finished eating, which we appreciated. However, a few guests witnessed Douglas taking a plate of food and a cookie from our catering as he returned to his side of the castle. We weren't upset about it, but it did feel odd since it hadn't been discussed beforehand. The venue itself is stunning, but couples considering booking should be aware that the owners remain very present and involved throughout the event. Sometimes in ways that make it difficult to fully relax and enjoy your celebration.

Right off the bat I go to check In and was pleasantly surprised to find a regular American behind…read morethe desk instead of some Indian/Pakistani type. That was great. He was quite pleasant. I checked in at 3pm. So I was trying to watch TV when at 5pm the maid service decides to vacuum the hallways with very loud vacuum. So had to turn the volume up so could hear what I was watching on TV. Really? You had all day to do this you had to wait till now? And then ( I swear I'm not making this up) I'm in bed trying to sleep and 10pm some moron decides that's the best time to mow the field right out my room with a very loud mowing machine. Are you freaking kidding me? Mowing at that time of night? C'mon man! I really felt like telling the morning desk person (which would have been ok since it was another regular American person) but decided since they probably wouldn't have done anything about it anyway, I'll just Yelp about it. So stars only for the fact this place is run by regular Americans instead of having to put up with those, er, umm, ... from the other side of the world.

Beds were comfortable. The price was reasonable and they didn't charge extra for our dogs. The only thing that might have given me pause had I been a lone woman traveling was all the tractor trailers. I personally only saw other families, but there was a woman in front of the hotel in the evening who spent a great deal of time holding a relatively loud conversation on her phone while we unloaded. ( things that make you go hmm, and why I might be hesitant to stay here as a lone woman ). We also had some furniture in the back of our truck and some boxes in the car and no one messed with anything in the excellently lit lot. I would stay here again given its convenience and value but not as a solo female traveler.
