Lovely getaway! The castle is an English style manor house tucked away in the woods and fields not far from Spencer Indiana. The rooms, the food, the hosts. The views, the props ... It's all well done! We will be back.

We had a lovely stay. Everything was beautiful, the hosts were very sweet, and the accommodations were perfect. Definitely a getaway worth taking!

Last summer, on the recommendation of a relative, we stopped by Clayshire Castle for an open house. My husband and I loved it so much that we booked the Wine Cellar soon after they opened. Doug and Mary Jo were wonderful hosts! The room was fantastic. The electric fireplace made it extra cozy, and we even enjoyed a bath in the extra large wine barrel tub. Breakfast was delicious, and they were able to cater to both my husband's full-of-meat diet and my vegetarian diet. We look forward to visiting again~

This review feels like a novel but bear with me. Clayshire Castle isn't your typical B&B experience we all know and many enjoy. Nor is anything typical about Lord Douglas and Lady Josephine Smock OR your own experience here. Lord Douglas is an aerospace engineer with Rolls Royce and Lady Josephine is a successful pediatrician in Indy with non-conventional retirement dreams of living in a castle. Most couples looking forward to retirement are considering downsizing, spending more time with the grandchildren or traveling. Not so much for Mary Jo and Doug Smock whose vision of building their retirement castle was realized last year, July 2012, with the B&B opened "pre-their-retirement" schedule. The installation of a beautiful wrought iron gate was necessary so inquiring minds wouldn't be knocking on their door at all hours. Not only is this a B&B on the weekends but Mary Jo & Doug's private residence within this 10,000 sq. ft. home. Are you an admirer of anything Renaissance or Medieval? Dream of an evening in a beautiful castle, dressing as Lady Guinevere with your own King Arthur escorting you to dine in the Grand Hall? Then a reservation at Clayshire Castle is a must for you. The drive from Indy is a little over an hour but enjoyable especially this time of year. As you pass through the gate onto the property you'll follow a winding 1/2 mile gravel driveway to reach the B&B. The winding drive can be hypnotic surrounded by the changing foliage and natural beauty then suddenly you notice the silence and tranquility. As you drive passed the stocked lake you'll fine you're already making mental notes of the cool spots along the way to revisit. Then without warning, standing before you is a magnificent 4 tower, 3 stories stone castle with a manicured lawn and gardens majestically sitting before you. I found myself pausing to admire every detail within sight while emotionally admiring the unshakeable commitment and dedication of the family. Envision staying in one of the five themed guest rooms, all with private baths, in a three story castle built on 120 acres of rolling hills where guests can walk miles of trails, fish in a 3 1/2 acre stocked lake, play lawn chess, walk through a developing hedge maze, enjoy an outdoor aromatic cedar hot tub, or curl up with your favorite book in an overstuffed chair. The Great Hall (max. 100 guests) is striking with handmade "medieval" furniture by Tell City Furniture, a stately fireplace, 4 large chandeliers' suspended from the vaulted ceiling with large windows allowing natural sunlight to fill the room and lovely views of the property. An impressive room for special events and large enough for weddings, renewing vows, anniversary parties, banquets (in costume? fun), or smaller gatherings for bridal/ baby showers, or a memorable milestone birthday bash. The Castle fits the bill for a romantic weekend and private wedding proposal. If you feel so inclined over 100 spectacular, theatrical-quality costumes are available to heighten the medieval experience. As with any well planned retirement and beginning of a new business this has taken 10 years of baby steps, financial planning and momentum from the family. The property was purchased in 2004 and seven years later, Sept 2011, Daniel Builders began construction and 10 months later completed their dream home. Of course staying with medieval guidelines the castle was appropriately dubbed "Clayshire," indicating the county of residence, just as it would have been titled back in medieval days. "Shire" is an old English word meaning "country". Katie, one of their daughters and a pediatrician by trade, explained this was the 7th version of the castle she drew with many changes recommended along the way by the family. Katie isn't an architect but has always loved to "scribble". Truly a family affair with love and pride engraved in every inch of the home by a fun loving and disciplined family. After speaking with the family for a matter of minutes we soon realized not only do they love castles but exhibit a wealth of historical knowledge they love to share with humor and personality. This home wasn't designed to be historically accurate down to the last stone but to be a fun 21st century version with historical highlights. Clayshire Castle rock's modern day twists with geo-thermal heating, private baths, flat screen television, electric fireplace and a sitting area in each bedroom. Downstairs has a family room atmosphere with full service kitchen, LARGE flat-screen, overstuffed sofas, board game area, children's play room, costume room plus an exercise room. This is a medieval experience with all the luxuries of the 21st century. Choose from one of the following 5 themed rooms for a fun getaway. On the 1st floor is the Tournament Room & Tapestry Room, The Enchanted Forest & Fairy Tale Room are both on 2nd floor, and the Wine Cellar Room is downstairs with an amazing tub. Thank you for sharing your dream home with us.

I attended a wedding here this past Saturday, and this place is very unique…read more My boyfriend is from Indiana, and one of his childhood friends got married here. It's in a rural part of Brown County (Columbus, IN, technically) and we thought maybe we had the wrong address - other than a few houses around, there's nothing else out there, and no signs for the venue, either, until you are right at it. His friend's ceremony was very short, and was outdoors in the rock formation area, of which I saw pictures of on the venue's website. Luckily it was a great day weather-wise - if it was rainy I could foresee some issues, as there's no cover. From there, we moved to the tent next door, which I believe he had rented (not sure it comes with the venue rental). There's also some sort of house or lodge on property, where I assume is for the bride, groom, and bridesmaids/groomsmen to get ready. The only negative I can say is that there were no "regular" bathrooms, only port-a-potties, which I definitely was not expecting. I can only assume that the house/lodge had a regular bathroom for the bridal party, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Otherwise, very nice area and venue, and I very much enjoyed attending the wedding I went to there.

Prior to the wedding that I attended recently, I had called the number (twice) listed on the…read morewebsite and left messages. I knew that I would be attending an event there and needed to know how "handicap accessible" the site was as we had someone who would not be able to walk very far and would need a scooter. The voicemail does pick up and if I remember correctly, the gentleman's name who does the recording is Daniel. I never received a follow up call so I had to tell the attendee that she might have issues traversing the terrain. The wedding area was very pretty and can be decorated nicely. I was a little surprised that some of the areas had not been mowed or hit with a weed eater? There is potential here for a nice venue for small intimate weddings.

They happened to have changed owners during that time and our original contract was honored with no problems. Nice large space can accommodate about 70 people downstairs with plenty of room to walk around. You gain access to the space beginning at 1pm on friday and ends Saturday evening or Sunday morning depending on if there is another wedding. Space for bartender Beautiful barn Lake up the hill is beautiful to take pictures Secluded, not much road noise Cons: When we arrived, they filled every space in the loft of the barn with tables and chairs, leaving no clear space for a dance floor. They didn't ask about how we wanted the upstairs arranged, only the downstairs. We wanted to put the dance floor in the loft, because that seemed the most logical space for dancing. So, we rearranged the tables upstairs to make a space for a dance floor and we carried the chairs from upstairs to outside during the reception. Most chairs were used to sit around the bonfire, because there were only three small benches to sit on out there. The coordinator from the barn arrived at 10PM and started badgering us to clean the space up right away. They wanted us to put every table and chair back where it was when we arrived (again, they never asked us how we wanted the space to be arranged). We carried most upstairs, but they badgered us about 10 more they found instead of taking 2 trips to help us carry them back upstairs. They also made us move the tables and chairs back into the same positions they were in when we got the space. Some of their heaters didn't work. Our wedding planner had called several times about the heaters being out of gas. They should have left some propane tanks to use as extras, because it was freezing! The countertops in the kitchen were filthy. We used a Lysol wipe on it and it was black with one wipe. Utility area was just cluttered leaving us no room to store anything. Several gnats outside, should maybe consider spraying. The refrigerator wasn't plugged in and therefore wasn't cold when we arrived, so that we could put our food, desserts, drinks, and flowers in the fridge. They have a very small hand sink in the kitchen making it hard to wash up stuff. They don't have potable water, and they don't even have signs that say that the water isn't potable, we had to make, print and bring our own. Some of our guests drank the water before our signs went up. Oops! There are no outlets in the hallway. Some could be added to that food or drink warmers could be plugged in.

It's not well marked AND the road is very curvy (having a light at the entrance would have been appreciated). The venue itself is an old barn (hence the name) that has been beautifully restored. Although simple, it's tasteful and easily able to fit to anyone's wedding colors. The inside of the barn was decked out in tables for a sit down dinner for around 100 people with a small dance floor on the west end of the barn. It was a little tight walking around with the tables, but everyone managed without any troubles and nothing was spilled that I saw. The wedding ceremony was outside. Wooden benches and a stage under the trees made for a very pretty venue, but since this is about the venue and not the wedding (although fantastic).. it should be pointed out that the bugs were awful here. There was bug spray available that looked like it came from the wedding party, but it didn't do much of anything. Fortunately someone had some of the "good stuff" and it was passed around to everyone and liberally applied. Seriously, make sure if you have an event here that you pack extra strength bug spray.. something I wouldn't have thought of until being here. One other item to point out... the mens restroom. It's a single use bathroom (meaning one at a time). For me, I was pleased with this. For the others standing in line, I heard some grumblings. If you're looking for a rustic venue for a wedding of about 100 people, this is the place I'd pick. Absolutely lovely.

There is also no sound system , you are expected to provide that yourself. After reading the owners backstory where she states that she felt it her mission to make a brides experience lovely yet affordable-- she is definitely not up for negotiation on affordability at all. We tried talking to her about omitting certain items and doing some of the manual labor ourselves in order to offset the overpriced cost for the facility and was She absolutely not budging on cost. Her response was "that's not how we do things around here ". They advertise that there is a banquet tent however they no longer offer the tent service for your reception you must now purchase/rent your own which can cost up to an additional thousand dollars and you must provide your own insurance (another cost of $100+) on top of the rental for the church. They have labor charge of $500 which is setting up tables and chairs. Again... We asked if we could do the manual labor ourselves or other ways we could offset the price we were always met with a snarky attitude followed by the answer NO . Makes me wonder if her backstory is even authentic! Also, I am surprised at any 4 star reviews. Makes me wonder if they're her friends and family- I can not see as to why they would have rated 4 stars otherwise.
