I love the school is small and that all the teachers care for all the students and most of the students care for their school and their community. This school has hosted the Special Olympics in the past. And the students take part in aiding the Olympians and running the event.

The day I visited I stopped in at the office to ask if I could have a peak at my old classroom. I was told it wasn't possible right now because class was still in session. I was told I was welcome to come back after school if I'd like. I never did like being told to stay after class had ended...apparently I still don't. Besides we had other things to go see that day. This isn't a bad school and it's not a great school. My oldest attended here starting with kindergarten clear through 5th grade last year. In the later years, we definitely had more troubles than in the early years. By troubles I mean mostly with bullies and such. And his teacher for a portion of his 5th grade year was simply awful. A new teacher came in mid-way but in many cases, the damage had been done. My other son now attends kindergarten. Since my youngest will be in kindergarten the year after next, we're thinking of waiting it out until she's done with kindergarten and then moving both Coral Academy Elementary, but we may make that decision sooner if we need to. But that isn't to say that Silver Lake doesn't try. They are rather limited in what they can do. The budget for schools in this state is deplorable and the teachers and administration for the most part do their best with what they have. And some of the issues we had were issues any kid could have at any school and weren't limited only to Silver Lake. It's a convenient location, a nice building and a pleasant neighborhood. The pick up/drop off situation has improved over the years, thankfully and is no longer barely restrained chaos. ;) So that's a bonus.

If you complain to the principal over serious issues, he doesn't care, he doesn't even respond to you. There was a code yellow like last year and it should've been a code red cause people brought weapons on property and they wanted to cover it up. Other students and myself are the only reason parents got a call the NEXT day about it. There's too many details to share here. Even today I am terrified when the announcements sound comes over the speakers if it is at a random time. Many people at our school are aware of the stoners and vapers and they don't do anything about it. It's so bad that you can't go into certain bathrooms because those are the 'smoke spots'. As I did mention, I have had some wonderful teachers, so it just sucks that I have to complain about the teachers here as well. For this one teacher, in context (which doesn't make it much better) we talked about humanistic psychology and a criticism of it is that they are over accepting. Basically the teacher stated that "so if you ___ 4 year olds." Yeah, we all looked at each other disgusted like "Did he really say that? That's disgusting." That same teacher has also made very rude and snarky remarks to students. A very very controlling person. Some days I don't wanna go to school because I'm scared he'll make remarks about me and humiliate me in front of the class, he's already done it to me. After lunch, I think based on my experience, the upstairs bathrooms are a hit or miss because they are either locked all class period during 3rd period or open after 20 minutes. So if you really need to use it, Aunt Flo has arrived, or whatever, you're screwed until the end of the day if you're lucky enough to get to a bathroom. Honestly, if you want better education for your kids: go somewhere else. Maybe even go to Finland. Overall, can't wait to graduate because this has been a rollercoaster if the rollercoaster was barely on the track, had no seatbelts, and was on fire. Edit: Another thing, they just told us a week ago that we could be staying till 4:30pm for the exam, which would be ok, IF they told us like a month ago. So now the teacher basically said to just take that day off from work, for students who work, when it is probably too late to say anything. But the problem is, I have an off campus that day (which I worked s hard to get) and the purpose for that off campus is to help my dad because of medical issues. They literally told me I can't do anything about it so now I have to figure out 1. How to get home 2. Where to put my stuff 3. How my dad will get the help he needs.
