Visited from out of state on a Sunday night. Greeted by an obviously intoxicated bartender (green hair and glasses) who yelled at us for being next to where he takes orders (very hostile). He then played it off as a joke after my partner and I were visibly confused ("sorry I was just joking, wasn't trying to be mean"). Had a beer and left after we noticed he was downing leftover drinks from patrons. I get that this may be a local bar and it seemed like everyone knew each other and didn't care that people were drinking on the job but to each their own I guess. read more

I'm being generous giving this place two stars instead of one, because if what happened tonight didn't, maybe I could've enjoyed it better. The music wasn't anything to write home about but anything sounds good after booze. Being pride month, I didn't expect to be harassed or have my friends felt like shit, but here we are! When we went upstairs there was no current cover but toward an hour in some guy set up shop and demanded a cover from us when we came back to the bathroom. A friend of mine said he had gotten in earlier and literally just went to the bathroom down the hall. The proper thing to do is to stamp people but I guess what this guy did was more "appropriate" -- ask my friend to show him his dick instead of the cover Mind you, this isn't a random bar attendee, this is someone who WORKS HERE and is probably over 50, and the professionalism that he should have had? Out the window. It was absolutely inappropriate to ask my friend to strip to show him his genitals to gain re-entry and no, he wasn't joking -- he got irate when my friend obviously wouldn't. Huge fan of this place. The bar is down a (well-lit) alley. I love that! It makes me feel just a bit naughty, which I wish I felt walking into every queer bar. It definitely has its regulars; there's one guy who has been there every single time I've gone. I love that. Each night has a very different vibe. Sunday night karaoke turns out the Broadway queens and the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington. Those boys can sing! Monday night karaoke, Singing with the Sisters, is a blast. The D.C. Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence really know how to be gracious and fun hostess. Plus it's a fundraiser; the Sisters raise money for charities each week. Sister Allie is simply amazing! (Full disclosure: She paid me to say that.) Tuesday and Wednesday are quieter nights, chill crowd. Thursday's shirtless drinking draws a huge, fairly diverse crowd. Loads of fun. Don't forget to tip your bartenders, though. Fridays and Saturdays often have themed parties, which draw different groups, especially otters and bears and pigs. Oh, my. I've been going to the Green Lantern for years, but only recently have I made it my go-to bar. D.C. has a reputation for a being an uptight town. I think that's largely blown out of proportion because of bars like Green Lantern. Low key, unpretentious, and fun crowds. read more

The bartenders are nice and the drinks are reasonably priced but we went for karaoke and while the KJ pretends to be friendly he only selects his friends to sing. I turned in one song and waited over an hour and never got to sing while his friends sang over and over again. Wouldn't let me in with a bag (it was a waist pack). How are you not going to have a coat/bag check? Of course there are going to be people with bags, especially tourists checking out the gay bars in a touristy city. I've never ever been turned away from a bar/club for having a bag before. Ridiculous. Get a coat/bag check. Inspect people's bags upon entering. Other places have done the same during pride weekends. Gay bars were created to be safe spaces. My fiancé and I visit the DC area often and this was our first time at the Green Lantern. It can seem confusing to find, especially for an Uber Driver but is tucked away in a very well lit and clean alley. This is a pretty neat place! You basically get two bars in one. As soon as you go in downstairs, there is a square bar that fills most of the room. Something that caught me off guard was how nice the bar top is. If I'm mistaken it was granite and they even have coasters! Very nice! I always enjoy a place that plays music videos to add to the scenery. The second floor features a tradition wall bar as well as a modest sized dance floor with a decent sound system. They do have a coat check in the back of the second floor so don't worry about bringing your coat. The crowd was very mixed but is definitely not the super young gay's club. They seemed to have a mixture of all ages and everyone seemed very comfortable. The drinks were a little higher priced than I was expecting but didn't disappoint. Great location downtown and I'm sure we will be back. read more

This is certainly not a gay friendly community bar. I went there tonight and while the server was friendly not even a hello from anyone else. Very unfriendly and unwelcoming - so if you are traveling from away and looking for a friendly place in the LGBTQ community - don't go looking here to feel welcomed. This place was certainly interesting as its location is in an alley. My Uber had a hard time finding it. I will say that the alley is one of the 'nicest' alleys I've been in! Lol yes, this is weird to talk about but it was clean and well lit so it's not like you're entering the underworld. Ok on to the actual review... My partner fell in love with this place, I thought it was average. Downstairs sported a karaoke section which I quickly dismissed since I hate karaoke. Upstairs had a bar, dance floor and a semi sectioned off area. Drinks were cheap. Men were in their jocks and some in harnesses because of Mid Atlantic Leather week. The crowd was mostly older which I have zero issues with and the brain dead Bollywood movies playing on the TVs were curiously entertaining. I don't understand the music though. Why do these bars always go for these bizarre techno mixes? It wasn't bad but I hoped this crowd would appreciate some older tunes. Eh, I'm just a 26 year old man who likes older music so I'm never satisfied with most gay bars. This bar gets huge points for having the cheapest coat check in existence. This is an awesome little neighborhood gay bar tucked away in an alley. I went twice while visiting DC and had a good time! They were packed with hot shirtless men on a Thursday night from 10-11 you get to drink for free if you take your shirt off!! Who can beat that?! If not, time to say goodbye to your money. My drink was almost 10 bucks. Soon after I arrived, that's what happened to (almost) everyone in this place. I took my Long Island Ice Tea (which my friend in California refers to as a REAL drink) and looked around. The upstairs dance floor was a madhouse, packed with wall-to-wall gay men with the Marquis de Sade and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch leading the pack. Just kidding, you think a writhing mass of flesh, alcohol drinks and sweat can have a leader? Also, no one was dancing. How odd. I joked with a kid who barely spoke English about where were all the women at? I also joked with a shirtless hairy guy smoking outside how this place is a madhouse, and it wasn't even a weekend yet. They both laughed. What can I say, I'm funny when I'm buzzed. All in all, good crowd. Seemingly nice people, both the bar patrons and the bartenders. Note: Gay porn played in monitors upstairs. That was surreal. Also, my drink was served in a fruit preserve jar. Now, that's awesome! Note 2: You might wonder whether I took off my shirt or not. I consider myself an aficionado of seedy, alley-way bars. And as one seems to be shuttering every other month, it's best to appreciate what our great city has, while we have it. It's no secret that gay bars have changed over the years, and Green Lantern is in part, a blast from the past. As one of the original gay bars in DC, the alley location alone tells you of it's early secretive life. But unlike some of the other similar places that have existed across the city, GL has successfully been able to adapt and spread it's wings to become a bar that people still flock to. On just about any night, the crowd is diverse. You have some of the older guys who have probably been coming for decades, groups of young guys in for the cheap drinks and chill vibe, and just about anyone else in between. During the week, they have happy hour which is always great and cheap, and they run specials throughout the week. Thursday is one of the busiest nights where shirtless men drink for free after 10. Monthly parties also take place that bring in huge mix of people. For gay bars in DC, Green Lantern is hands down one of the best. It's not as flashy as Town, or as expensive for that matter. And not nearly as pretentious. It's a come as you are bar, where people are friendly, the drinks are strong and the environment is comfortable. Each time I go, I am afraid that it could be one of my last, as the trend of historic gays bars closing across the city, but it just makes me want to keep going, in hopes that we can buck the unfortunate trend. read more

Recently I have the pleasure of going to DC for a fun outing with my boyfriend, we planned to visit a few gay bars and stumbled into the Eagle which was quiet and a tad on the boring side, we went to Secrets to view some sad and bored "dancers" who are jiggling their assets but looked dead in the eyes. The only place that's worthy to write home, or in this case, Yelp about is Green Lantern. No doubt a bar located in the back alley of the block is confusing and no it didn't look much from the outside and even upon entering but it was much more. From out of town, we didn't know what to expect so when we ascended to the second floor and saw that everybody was shirtless and getting free drinks for being so, and so did we. Shirtless Thursday was an exhilarating experience that you got to experience being shirtless with almost 100 half naked gay men in close proximity. It's like a meat market where you get to sample the goods before taking some home. Since the place itself is a bit small, there is a lot of skin on skin action, you would have to brush against a few of them when you're trying to get to the bar or getting in or out of the place. That makes for easy flirting as well. The crowd here is older. Around 30+, mostly hairy men which I enjoy. Lots of eye candy. There's also porn playing on monitors. A friend who owns a bar in Philly used to ask for idea on how to attract customers and I wish I had experienced shirtless Thursdays before he closed shops. read more

Sunday night, June 2nd. My birthday. It was getting later in the evening, so I decided to pop into the Green Lantern. I have only been here a few times, and each time was just ok...until this time. I entered the bar and sat down. The first thing I noticed was the cell phone chargers that the bar provides. Good thing. But that's about where it ended this evening. For a typical DC bar, the drink prices were a bit steeper than what I've experienced at other bars (more in a moment). This is not the type of bar that you can drink on the cheap. $7 for Bacardi? Uh.....I've been to bars where I can get it for about $2 cheaper, if not more. Then, the bartender that was working that night had no personality, no smile, nothing. He had the "drink and shut up" look on his face. You can't have that look or mentality as a bartender. On this particular night, however, they were doing karaoke, and the host, as soon as he opened the show, looked at me and said "there's a book right in front of you; you better look through it and pick a song". Really? Needless to say, I didn't pick up the book, didn't sing a song, and after paying $14 for a Bacardi and Coke and an extra shot of Bacardi, decided it was time to leave. Oh, and when I mentioned that it was my birthday, what did the bartender do? Look at me after I had ordered my Bacardi and Coke and an extra shot of Bacardi, and say "$14". No happy birthday, no "thank you", nothing. Way to make someone feel comfortable. read more

After Omega closed, there wasn't too many other bars I was interested in going to. I had been to GL several times in the past, for a few events upstairs, but I never really gave it the chance it deserved. I was an Omega regular for a little while, even right up until it's last night. Which if you missed it, was awesome! Green Lantern is a great bar. A lot of Omega regulars go there now and those that have already been going there are all very nice people. The drinks are cheap, and that's cool. Two major things about this bar that makes it completely different than any other bar I've been to elsewhere. One, they actually have chargers for your Android/iPhone devices. And two, you can bring your own food into the establishment and eat it right there at the bar. How many bars allow you to bring your own food in and eat it too? The only hang up I have with The Green Lantern, is their trashy bathrooms. They generally stink, stalls are missing doors, toilets missing seats or, even better, some toilets don't work at all and it resembles the ugliness that The Fireplace bathrooms are over off of DuPont Circle, on P St. The bathrooms are so nasty that you're likely to catch an STD just by merely walking into it. That said, the rest of the establishment is great. But they seriously need to upgrade those bathrooms. They've done an awful lot of upgrading over course of many years, but the one thing they don't seem to give two **its about, the bathrooms. read more

Only possible criticisms: the crowd is late 20s, early 30s on a Friday night. I personally like this age group, but I know for a lot of "babies" like myself (21 year olds), they think older people are creepy. (They are wrong). It was a little more low key than I had expected, but it WAS super rainy AND the debates were on so it was an off-Friday in the District. Hard core (Did you get that??? Hard. I am from out of town and visited this bar with a few friends on Thursday (Shirtless Free Drinks). I was one of maybe 3 lesbians in the whole place and I had a BLAST! The drinks were surprisingly strong for being free, and let's be honest, it's so much more fun to be at a bar when everyone is shirtless. You can admire the beautiful bodies, smell people's sweat, see how amazingly hairy That One Guy is, and lot's more. It's fun, it really is! You should just do it for the experience anyway. Plus, there's pornography on the TV's by the bar, which is fun to watch and starts conversations. The location is hilarious and random which adds to the charm (if you could call it that), and the people are really friendly. They played some great songs upstairs too. I'd DEFINITELY go back, you can't beat four free drinks just for walking around in a sports bra. Win!! read more

It was a 5 until last Saturday 10 March 2018: I've never written a negative review to this degree before but I have never been so disrespected by a bar staff member ...ever really. I really enjoy Green Lantern and all of its events but this needs to be said and action should be taken. I was there with my partner to watch the star search drag show. We approached the bartender, Matt Strother, whom my boyfriend is acquaintances with. They chatted as usual; we got our drinks, and proceeded to watching the show. Then Matt's behavior slowly went from harmless flirting to deliberate and unprofessional conduct. My back was turned to the bar as I watched the show; I turned around to place my finished drink on the bar. It was in that instance that I witnessed Matt pulling his shorts down exposing his backside and smiling at my boyfriend. I pulled my BF aside and asked what that was about and he stated that Matt had previously contacted him on social media to see if he was coming earlier that day. When they got on that topic my bf said that he came to see his friend perform. To which Matt responded, "I know why you really came here" and proceeded to touch himself. I brushed it off; he knew we were there together, so I assumed he was just fooling around. We continued to watch the show and shortly after I felt something looming over my shoulder and I turned my head to look back. There was Matt, on the bar, on his knees, directly behind my boyfriend with his crotch behind his head. I leaned over to my BF and smiled and pointed it out to him we both just laughed. Again, I assumed his behavior was benign in origin. Later on that night I turned around to buy a couple shots for a friend and myself who was celebrating her b-day. Which I charged on my card, and instead of handing me the receipt back to sign it, Matt comes from around the bar and stops the drag show and starts to complain about how he doesn't understand why people don't sign their credit card receipts. He then reads out my full name to the whole bar without ever even handing me the receipt in the first place. I motioned in his direction that it was mine. He goes to hand it to me and I jokingly say "you didn't need to do that" and then his behavior took a violent turn and he caught an attitude. He then reaches around and grabs me by the back of my neck and yells for security "GET HIM OUT OF HERE". I know at this point he has just assaulted me so I push his hand away lean onto the bar top to sign my receipt. Again I yell out "You knew I was here with your friend you didn't need to do that" He screamed in my face "I KNOW HIM, NOT YOU" (pointing at my BF...jealous much?). Now my boyfriend had to step in between us and move him back. And we head for the exit. NEVER to return to this establishment. His behavior violated DC health code regulations: 402 HANDS AND ARMS WHEN TO WASH 402.1 Food employees shall clean their hands and exposed portions of their arms as specified in §401 immediately before working in direct contact with food, clean equipment and utensils, and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles, P and: After touching bare human body parts other than clean hands and clean, exposed portions of arms; Matt can be charged with assault for placing his hands on me. He is not security staff and he has no right to touch any bar patrons. I will be filing a complaint with BBB and the DC Dept. of Health. read more

This one was a bit hard to find, to say the least. I was surprised when I ended up here last Friday night since I'd thought I must've already frequented all the bars in my neighborhood. Except not. I came to meet a friend and had to call him while I looked for the place. I finally found it with his instructions on the phone, showed the bouncer my ID and stepped in. Looked like a typical dive bar downstairs and I was glad/relieved -- I had wanted to just chill at a dive bar for a couple of drinks and have a somewhat laid-back Friday night. Except not. We hung out downstairs by the bar for a short while and he told me "there's dancing upstairs." Alright, I guess we have to go then. So up I went. And entered an utterly different arena. There were strobe lights flashing on everyone on the dance floor, which was not packed but pretty crowded. And of course I noticed the raunchy videos of gay sex taking place on the monitors behind the bar, but not until later. My straight guy friend was shocked/terrified/scared. Now unto the drag shows. Interesting. The performer lip-synced to a few tunes while stripping off the costume layer by layer. There was also a big guy roaming around in a green wig (not sure if this is a regular appearance at the club) that added to our entertainment. That was an experience, in sum. But by this point I'm pretty done with gay bars so I'm not sure if I'll want to be back. read more

While I think I was one of three girls there that night, I had a lot of fun. My friend did tell me that he's never seen a girl there ever though. I guess it was because of the underwear auction that was going on. Either way, everyone was super nice and the bartender humored me by making me his favorite drink. [Scooby Doo Snack?] The only thing that did make me a bit uncomfortable was the porn being played everywhere. Apparently Thursday nights are fun. You drink free if you go shirtless. There is also a bear night too. The bar does seem to be a bit older, hairier, bigger crowd but that's cool. The doorman was super awesome telling me all about the place and such. This is against their contract with the big four credit card companies and someone could probably make a pretty penny suing. My husband and I were in DC for the ADA convention. We'd spend our days taking classes, buying supplies / equipment from vendors on the convention floor, then spend our evenings enjoying drinks after a nice meal somewhere. It's a shame we didn't get to The Green Lantern until Sunday night (the night before we left for home). If I knew then what I know now we'd have been there Friday and Saturday. At first, the location put me off. It's in an alley? Really? But once we got there I saw that it wasn't the sketchy scene I'd imagined. It's a brightly lit alley, clean and clearly visible from the street ... no problem. The interior is pretty nice. The first floor is dominated by a large circular bar ringed with barstools. There are small tables to your immediate left, a big cushy couch and seating in a nook next to the entrance on your left, and standing room only along a rail to your right. There's a DJ Booth (?), a couple of video game machines, a Get-It-Your-Own-Damn-Self popcorn machine, and stairs to the dancefloor / restrooms ... all behind the bar. And, of course, there are the required big screen TVs everywhere playing music videos. We grabbed a cheap (but potent) Happy Hour drink at the bar then settled in at one of the tall cocktail tables on the left and watched the crowd roll in. It reminded me of "Cheers". Everybody seemed to know everybody else and they were all hugs and chatting until the door opened and someone else they all knew came in and there were more hugs and catching up, etc ... Then we learned that it was Karaoke night ... and these guys were amped up! There were some amazing singers. We heard everything from Lady GaGa, to Garth Brooks, to show-tunes from Miss Saigon and Le Miserables. And it really got good when everybody in the joint was singing! Then we learned that the DC Gay Men's Chorus had showed up. That explained all the fabulous singers! Eventually I had to make a trip to the restroom upstairs and was pleased to see that a large dancefloor and bar were also up there. The bar / dancefloor were not open at the time, but I can imagine that it's a great scene on a Friday or Saturday night. We had a wonderful evening. We met some great guys from the Chorus, heard some fabulous singing, enjoyed some potent / inexpensive drinks, and generally felt comfortably at home. This will be a Must on our next trip to DC. read more

Thursdays, they have an hour where you get free drinks if you go shirtless. Green Lantern is an alright gay bar for men who are not too preppy to those who are not quite into the whole tough scene. A just-right bar for the average gay men. This bar isn't anything fancy. Just a quaint bar with posters of the superhero, Green Lantern, here and there. Drinks are good. Music is good. I think on Thursday nights, it's College Night. You get free beer, during limited hours, with shirts off. During the weekends, this place is decently packed. read more

This was my 2nd gay bar ever, and 2nd gay bar of the night. I'm straight, but my friend isn't so I wanted him to feel comfortable going out to drink. Thursday is shirtless night, where from 9-11PM men don't wear shirts and get free drinks. They have a coat check upstairs for $2 which is super cheap. Upstairs was a DJ, downstairs was a video bar. Staff were awesome, people there were awesome. The only thing is, this place is quite hidden and if my friend didn't know where it was before we went, I would've gotten lost. NOW WITH 50% LESS SLEAZE! I feel like that's a sign they should hang above the front door now. My partner, my BFF and I went there for Halloween only a couple of days ago. My partner had never been, and my BFF and I had not paid the "Green Latrene" a visit since the old days of "The Black Hole", (and you long-time patrons know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.) The "Hole" is gone now, the upstairs portion reduced by about a third, with a deejay booth added and the main bar moved up against the wall instead of out in the middle of the floor. The decorations were pretty great and the majority of the staff were in fine form in costume, (though some of the patrons look like they're in costume even when it's NOT Halloween.) Maybe I'm just old and jaded, but the hardcore porn playing on the huge wide-screen monitor on the far side wall near the deejay booth did absolutely NOTHING for me. ZZZZZZZ. The crowd demographic has skewed more towards our particular age group (mid-40's and up), though some youthful, twinkish faces were sprinkled here and there. The highlight of the evening, of course, was the Best Costume Contest, which ranged from the tired (some guy who threw on a homemade toga and called himself "Caesar"), to the hysterically elaborate (the duo dressed as "Charlotte" and 'Miss Cissy" from the immortal Carol Burnett skit, "Went With The Wind." They won, not surprisingly enough.) It still strikes me as more of a neighborhood bar than a major attraction like Remington's (I could swear to GAWD I saw customers who were still going there ten years ago or more!!!), but if you're not into the whole Dupont Circle bar scene, it's still a nice alternative. Oh, yeah...the only 'down' side was the semi-naked floor show as choreographed and performed by the Nearly Naked Bear Foursome...four heavyset, middle-aged guys going shirtless, who were more than slightly snockered and getting VERY friendly with each other. UPDATE: Now the home of Friday evening's "Grrrrrrrrrr" Happy Hour! What a fun place! Washington D.C. climbs down off its high horse to enjoy a cold beer with buddies. Flirty bartenders downstairs, hot mix music upstairs. The crowd is a refreshing mix of regular guys, neighborhood men, a few twinky boys, several reliable Bears, college guys, blue collar, and a few muscle guys from the gym next door. There are drink specials pretty much every night, but the Shirtless and Underwear Nights are always a good time! Nestled between tall buildings, so could be a little hard to find your first time. Made a 2nd trip to the GL with my BF in tow for Monday karaoke night. Had a blast! Happy hour is all day on Mondays. The karaoke was totally fun. The crowd was great - fun and friendly. This spot is quickly becoming a neighborhood fav. And I have no doubt we will be back repeatedly for karaoke. read more

It's wasx a cool and chill at atmosphere. They had a all you can drink Bacardi night for like $30. Couldn't go wrong with that.
