For those non-locals like me who haven't been going for 20 years, it's an outdoor free music festival held once a year in Corporate Woods Business Park. All donations and proceeds concessions and such go to local children's charities. What I really appreciated about the event was that many of the concessions were run by local favorites like La Bodega, Jack Stack and Bo Ling's. Don't worry though, you can still get your nacho's and funnel cake for those seeking a some traditional fair food. Beer, wine and sangria also flows aplenty! Live Jazz playing Friday and Saturday night and there's a fun run on Saturday morning. Personally the run is not for me after all the Sangria from Friday night, you won't catch this girl tackling a 5K or 10K. But don't worry runners, I'm here for moral support! I'll meet you for another glass of Sangria at the finish line! Hints - Don't bring a cooler, they aren't allowed as you are supposed to buy the food there. Before you complain remember it's for the kids. Trust me I'm using that line all weekend "I need this kettle corn, it's for the kids!" - Bring blankets and lawn chairs, no seating in the park. Unless you are going fancy and buying a seat ($60) in the jazz pavilion (read: picnic tabled area with while picket fence)! - Bring cash. Enough said. - Come early to stake out your claim in the grass and to deal with parking. How can you not love it? Free jazz, an excuse to relax in the park all afternoon and evening and eat and drink your weight in goodies from local eateries! This might have to be my new KC tradition!

There were many people from all over town and our little area here in New Longview. My wife and I live is Kessler Ridge, so we drove less than five minutes to get to the mansion. We have been on the grounds many times before, but this was the first time we were able to visit the interior of the house. It is impressive and fun. There were lots of little pop-up shops set up inside the mansion, all on the main floor and then in a tent that extended from a sunporch on the back of the house. That was by far the biggest area to shop. The rest of the little pop-up areas were small and cozy inside the house. The staff was lovely and serving drinks, wine and food. We only had one glass of wine so we could drive home safely. We loved walking around the house, which everyone who attended was allowed to do with no drama and no supervision. Everyone I saw was super respectful of the property. Everyone we encountered was kind. It was a lovely evening. I hope they do it again next year so we can go.

Parking wasn't too difficult for a Friday night, and we were surprised to learn that the venue is located inside a hotel. Lonnie delivers a fantastic performance with great audience interaction, and his band is incredibly talented. The entertainment was easily the highlight of the evening. As for the food, it was just okay. We both ordered the Beef Wellington, and while it had good flavor, parts of the meat were quite chewy, which was a bit disappointing given the overall cost of the experience. Before visiting, I found information online suggesting dinner would cost around $50-$100 per person, so I anticipated spending under $200 for the two of us. Unfortunately, that estimate was far from accurate. When the bill arrived, it was already over $240, which caught me off guard. There was no pricing visible on the menu, website, or Yelp page, so I had no way of knowing what to expect. To make matters worse, when my card was processed, the final charge ended up being around $350 after additional fees and taxes were added, including tourism and hotel-related charges. I completely understand that quality entertainment comes with a cost, and I have no problem paying for a great dinner-and-show experience. My frustration stems from the lack of transparency. If guests are expected to spend this much, pricing should be clearly disclosed somewhere, and any additional fees should be communicated upfront rather than appearing as a surprise at the end of the night. Big Creek Country Showplace theatre was built in 1909, it became a movie theatre in the 1950's and…read morethen was purchased by the current owners in 1981 with the intention of launching the Big Creek Country Show. The first show on Halloween night in 1982 drew a crowd of 450 people to the little town of Pleasant Hill, MO. The physical shape and condition of the theatre is similar to what most of us old people might remember from when we went to the movies when we were kids. I doubt the theatre has been refurbished (except for possibly changing the cushions on the seats) and it hasn't changed much over the past several decades. The silver movie screen still hangs behind the back curtain. The charming history of the building has been preserved, but it's also clean and comfortable and conducive to a fun and entertaining evening. The owner of the theatre is hands-on involved in every production - booking the talent, playing the Sax, acting as emcee, and occasionally signing. The show consists of a band with a few consistent performers and a few rotating performers, plus a few guest singers. For instance, the keyboard player Phil Hilton has been on stage since the first production 38 years ago - and by the way, he's outrageously talented. Other band performers, such as the lead guitar player rotate but they always have top notch talent at each instrument for every performance. The show always features a few guest singers for each performance, with regular appearances by Duke Mason who is both gifted and funny and always makes his appearances memorable. The performances are held every Saturday evening year round beginning at 7:30 pm (they usually start 5-10 minutes late) until approximately 10 pm, and they range from classic old-time country to top 40 hits from the 50's-70's. No matter which genre they perform, the result is always very well done. You'll also discover that a number of patriotic and gospel songs are frequently sprinkled in, and these songs are often our favorites from each show. Seats for each show are reserved and you can call ahead or purchase your tickets the day of the show at the box office that opens at 6:00 pm on Saturday nights. Tickets are only $12, but be careful if Duke Mason is scheduled to perform, there will likely be very few tickets available for walk-ins. The location in Pleasant Hill might be a bit of a drive for some people in the KC area, but it's a fun and inexpensive way to spend a Saturday evening and I highly recommend it.

They did an excellent job with the design of this place, from the honeycombesque liquor display (see my photo) to the long curvy bar to the lounges in front of the windows. Gramercy bars were never my scene, but I can appreciate good aesthetics when I see 'em. We came to the Indie to see our friends in a burlesque act (this is not a regular thing there, as there isn't a stage and the layout of the place isn't really conducive to live shows of any kind), otherwise I don't normally hang out in this area, especially on a weekend night. Crowd was kind of typical P&L which is definitely not my thing, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. The DJ was playing music excruciatingly loud in between acts, and really ruined what could have been a decent, chill vibe (this was the consensus of our group, not just my cranky self speaking). I can't stand house music, so we would have left if we weren't waiting to see more burlesque. Needless to say, we left right after that was over. I'd come back again, if in the area as the DJ wasn't the bar's fault (and I think they did tell him to lower it a bit at a certain point). The bartendress was nice, drinks were fairly priced.
