This lodge utilizes self check-in after you've completed your forms, which is super convenient so you can check in anytime after 3p. My room was super clean and it looks like they updated the flooring in the room and updated the bathroom, except for the toilet seat. It's a ceramic toilet seat but it is chipped and needs to be replaced altogether. I would have given this property a 5 because of its location, cleanliness, and ease of check-in. However, I dropped it to a 3 but there are serious safety concerns: 1. Code for room key isn't really unique to rooms. It's 00 +room number. What stops someone from taking the key, opening the door, replacing the key after the door is open, and hiding in the room? I understand that this is a remote town but it is also a tourist attraction so it hosts a lot of people. 2. The sliding door doesn't lock. When it's opened and you click it into the lock position, it will be in the lock position, but when it's actually closed, it will NOT latch and will spring back into the unlock position. The safety bar also just is shoved into place without a holder to secure it. Any movement and the door is unsecured. I realized that I slept with a completely unlocked door. Yes, it was my fault for not double checking that it is locked before going to bed, but I wouldn't have been able to sleep knowing that I couldn't secure the door. In this instance, ignorance was bliss.

Nothing to complain about here. We had a King room with patio and the view was great of the Dunes. The bed was comfy and we were warm and cosy. The room was spotless. Know that you are a long way from any stores so bring your provos with you. The office has pizzas for sale $20 for a large frozen pizza, this was better than the alternative of nothing. They have two large ovens in the office so I guess you could also bring your own food to cook. The onsite store was closed for the season. Breakfast was more than adequate, cereal, muffins, waffles, hard boiled eggs, fruit and yogurt and toast, coffee and tea. Breakfast starts at 7.30 am which seemed late for us early morning dune revellers. The office staff were nice, kind and perky. We had wanted to stay in an RV but they were closed from Oct 31st for the season. No matter, our room worked out well. $133 felt like good value to us and you are right at the park rather than trudging in from Alamosa.

Location, location, location! GSDL is right outside Great Sand Dunes National Park. You won't get closer than this unless you're camping inside the park. Very nice views of the dunes from your patio. The rooms themselves are a bit run down, but cozy and clean. The patio BBQ and is a nice addition, and there's a microwave and mini fridge in the room too. Bring some food and grill up your dinner since food options in this area are scarce! They also have an indoor pool. No gym. Continental breakfast included in our $195/night rate. Coffee, juice, cereal, yogurt, waffles, and green and red burritos. Make sure you eat up because those dunes take a lot of energy to climb!

I wanted to watch the sunset and sunrise over the dunes and I pretty much got that. (It was snowing in the am so no good sunrise but it's colorado) Friendly people who work there and such a clean room. Very quiet- I didn't hear my neighbors at all. Dog friendly too. The breakfast is ok (I have dietary restrictions) but they have waffles.

This is such a nice place! It's so clean. You can't beat the location and the view from the patio is amazing. I would definitely recommend.

More debris outside your room! Attracting rodents.

We recently stayed two nights at the Great Sand Dunes Lodge, during Labor Day. Way over priced. The office personnel were helpful and courteous. Our room was very clean and the beds were comfortable. The chairs in the room are actually folding chairs! Breakfast was adequate. The lodge is in much need of updating. The grounds around the building is despicable with multiple mounds of debris within in clear view.

Mouse in room (the Avion Aspen Camper) during stay. Mouse was also in bed.

This place is mouse infested, in disrepair, and the owner is horrible. I spent over $300 for one night in the Avion Aspen camper. Upon arrival, a storm was moving in and rain was starting to sprinkle. The vent on the camper was stuck open, allowing rain into the camper, so I went to the front desk to ask that a maintenance person come out to look at it because we didn't want to get soaked. 30 minutes later, no one had come out and it was still sprinkling so I had to call the desk to remind them that we were getting rained on, only to have the guy working laugh and say he's been busy before finally coming out. In addition to that, the windows don't seal shut so some rain came in the windows when the wind blew and we could hear everything around us. Later in the night, just before midnight and well after we'd gone to bed, we woke up to a strange noise and found a mouse in the bed. It then ran across the kitchen area that's attached to the bed area (see photo) and kept making noises from under the stove. I called the front desk phone number and was moved to another room, but no one was on property to assist us. We had to go back & forth via phone calls and let ourselves into the room. When we went to check out, we asked for a refund because of how horrid our experience had been and the lady at the front desk called the owner, who was only going to compensate $60 for the awful stay. I let him know that is not enough for all we had been through and he then said he'd only refund $100 max and proceeded to lock the lady at the front desk out of handling our reservation in the computer system so that she didn't have the option to assist us (again, I paid over $300 for the night). I got on the phone with him and he screamed at me saying that I should be grateful that I got moved to another room in the middle of the night and proceeded to hang up on me. He also told me that the room he moved me to cost more than the room I was in, which was not true per the lady working the front desk (she checked the rate and the room I was moved to would have been over $100 less than the room I was in) and shouldn't matter because it was an empty room for the night anyway and there was a mouse in my bed. Save yourself money and a headache and don't stay here. While the drive from Great Sand Dunes to the next city is long, not dealing with this place is worth the drive.

Very Nice and flexible owners! We came with a pet without warning them and they found us a room anyway! We arrived at 8pm and have been told there is an indoor pool which closes at 9pm and they leave it open until 10pm for us. They asked if we needed anything to cook (plates, forks, salt...). Of course the view and location is amazing! And the price definitly worth it cause We have paid $30/pers for the night including breakfast!

My first trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park was in February of this year. It completely exceeded my expectations. No, it's not classic Colorado. Yes, I visited in the off season (more people should do this!) Minimal crowds meant having most of the park to myself. I rented a sandboard in Alamosa and sandboarded down the dunes. Only $20 at Kristi Mountain Sports! Talk about a thrilling experience! Totally recommend doing this if you're craving an adventure. All you have to be cautious of are the weather conditions, specifically wind. I watched the forecast like a hawk and tailored my visit accordingly. The two popular hikes to experience the dunes are High Dune and Star Dune, with the latter being the tallest. Now you know I'm a hiker and that I grew up near the ocean...but hiking on sand??? Not for the faint of heart! I made it up to High Dune and ran out of water and decided it was best to head back. Incredible views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. At a few points I was completely surrounded by dunes and that was a feeling I never thought I'd experience! Visiting at sunrise the following morning was spectacular. I was the only one in the trailhead parking lot! The pink skies over the dunes and mountains was a special combination. I hiked the Dunes Overlook Trail afterwards and I'd recommend it since you get to see the park from a higher vantage point. I also saw 25 deer on trail, no I'm not exaggerating! This was the adventure of a lifetime. Go play in Colorado's sandbox, you'll be surprised how much you enjoy it! Can't wait to come back!

I would equate it to like staying in a tiny home with a much better bathroom. If that's your thing, I'd say book a stay. However, I'd like to highlight my experience with the management, which was not the best. I don't know who I was texting with because they didn't give me their name. This situation may apply to you or it may not. I just need to type it here, so I can release the negative energy and anxiety that this situation has caused me. We booked this about a week in advance. We were told later that their business would not accept my letter from my doctor stating that my dog is my emotional support animal (ESA). I do have a few medical conditions that do allow me to have this designation for my pet. In the past 10 years, I have never had a hotel, motel, AirB&B, etc. refuse my letter and still charge me the pet fee, but Rustic Rook Resort did just that. I did ask that my reservation be cancelled and refunded, but they stated they would not reverse the charge because I would've needed to cancel 30 days in advance of the stay date. Keep in mind that I made the reservation a week before my trip. At this point, I was bound to the reservation or lose all of the money I'd spent. We did obviously keep the reservation and made the 4 hour drive to come to Mosca, CO and enjoy the Great Sand Dunes National Park, which was amazing! Later that day we started seeing severe weather alerts for snow, wind, and below freezing temperatures. We didn't think it would be a good idea to stay the second night for safety reasons. When I asked the person I'd been texting if they would kindly refund that second night due to the extreme weather conditions that were coming, I was denied any refund. We left anyway and hit some pretty bad weather on the way home. If we'd waited till the next day as planned, it would've been much worse. Now, here's where I stand on their decision to not waive my pet fee for an emotional support animal, and not offer any kind of refund for needing to leave a day early due to extreme weather. I realize there are policies in place, and I'm sure there will be a response to my review from Rustic Rook Resort. They will likely say that these are our policies, etc., etc. In response to that, I'd like to say that it's not always about a policy in your business. It's about customer satisfaction. Would it be a slight inconvenience for you to bend the rules in these situations? Most likely. Would it be the kind thing to do and to make this more of a positive human experience? Yes. I would've gladly made this an annual trip because we loved the area so much. I also have family who travel to Colorado to see us each year. They were excited to hear all about our experience. This is how you get repeat business. Making the customer have a positive experience should be a higher priority than adhering to a "policy." In addition, and this is just how I read the texts. Sometimes it's hard to tell the context of a text message, but in this case (in my opinion) those texts came off with a very condescending tone. This did not help in the least and it caused me a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety. This was supposed to be a nice, relaxing weekend getaway. Unfortunately, this experience made me wish we'd just stayed home. I hope this review helps someone else make an informed decision about whether to stay here. I'm not on here to bash this business. They made their decision and I'm choosing to share my experience based on the decision Rustic Rook Resort made. Thanks for reading. **Update 01/28/26. Just as I predicted, the policies were thrown back at me. I want to reiterate that sometimes it's about doing the right thing to create a positive outcome. I want to be sure to point out that we did leave before the major part of the storm hit. It was just starting as we left. Had we waited another day, it would've been a much worse situation. I appreciate that you are a small business. I also recognize that it's "off season," but that doesn't give you an excuse to just recite a policy to me and dismiss the fact that it was a real weather "emergency." Any reputable business would take that into account. Clearly we need to agree to disagree here, but the fact of the matter remains, I will never recommend your business to anyone. There are much more reputable accommodations in your area. I wish you well in your off season. I hope the money you made off of me during the weather emergency was worth having this review posted.

The sheets were so dirty that we could hardly sleep, which completely ruined our stay. When we brought this to the staff's attention, the main point of contact, Annette, insisted the sheets were clean even though they clearly were not. She offered no apology, no solution, and no compensation, which was incredibly disappointing. Clean sheets are the bare minimum expectation, and the customer service fell far short of that standard. It's a shame, because the location is truly prime and we would have loved to return. However, with poor customer service, dirty accommodations, non-working Wi-Fi, and a broken fire pit, we will not be coming back. I would not recommend staying here--there are plenty of places in the area that actually prioritize cleanliness and guest experience

The dresser under the TV had a stain of some assortment as well.
