The concept of Korean barbecue has always been a favourite of mine. Whether it be the fact that you can stuff your face full of meat for a small fee, or the atmosphere of friends cooking together whilst sharing some laughs, I'll never know. All I know is that the tradition of barbecue is a concept that transcends culture and creed: eating meat, drinking beer, and sharing stories is something we can all enjoy (sorry vegos). The hot plate is stationed in the middle of your table, and sitting down, you're ready to get started. And, just like any backyard barbecue, you cook the food yourself. There's a large selection of meats and vegetables ready for sizzling, and you don't have to worry about making wise choices - you can always go back and try something else once you've finished your first round. The kangaroo meat is something you simply have to try. I've never been a huge fan of kangaroo (the thought of eating one of those cute little things is a little heartbreaking), but the marinated kangaroo meat at Great River has completely changed my perspective. This is a great place for special occasions or hangouts with large groups of friends, and the atmosphere is very jovial. The food was good and they had a wide selection of different meats to choose from which all tasted great. Perfect if you like to cook your meat for a certain amount of time as you must cook it yourself on the provided grills on the table tops. The atmosphere was relaxed (went at 1pm on a Sunday) and there weren't many other people dining at the time. The price is fair and standard for the amount of food provided, four of us got the $90 set B which fed us all nicely and with drinks ended up only costing us around $25 each! Staff was friendly and attended to us when necessary, would definitely recommend if you're looking for a nice Korean BBQ place for lunch or dinner! read more

Great River Runs Dry This Korean BBQ restaurant is the perfect example of management ruining something that worked well and was raved about until renovations and greed took over. It WAS our go-to for a decently priced feast on Gouger, being uni students on a budget, but after tonight we definitely won't bother coming again. The renovations since our last visit are astonishing, but the charm is easily forgotten due to the new business model pushing up prices and foregoing the all-you-can-eat $25 price of the past. Sure it didn't have the best health standards in the past, but at least we left full and content. The buffet is replaced with a set price list of $18-20 per plate of each protein type, with $60, $90 & $135 offering a set selection of various meats you may not even want. Half of the items on the previous buffet aren't even on the menu, and they seem to think it's okay to just give us a bowl of lettuce with the dismal selection of meats for the lowest combo price. Shame.. This place WAS great once. Oh well, at least there is BBQ city across the street.. read more

We have travelled from Melbourne to Adelaide many times in the past few years, and have always been tempted to come to this place - On this trip we finally bit the bullet, but could safely say, maybe we shouldn't have. The staff were friendly enough, but that is probably the extent of the positive feedback goes. It is a Korean BBQ style establishment, where patrons cook their own meal. The food was fairly average - sort of having a big variety of meats, however not with the ideal style of flavours that I would necessarily go for if I owned this place. The buffet area was not constantly stocked up and the cleanliness of the area was not kept at a high standard. All in all, the whole place needs to be knocked down, re-modelled and an extra flare needs to be added. The buffet area needs to be moved from the front door, closer to the rear of the kitchen so that staff can keep an eye on stock levels & also have a little more control over food hygiene concerns. read more

I know it's gross, but I nurse a secret affection for the all-you-can-eat concept. Well, I don't really, but I nurse a secret affection for the Korean version of it. Great River Korean BBQ Restaurant is an all-you-can-eat joint on Gouger St. Fork out twenty five bucks (that is the cheaper weeknight price I think), plonk yourself down and let the waiter light your BBQ plate in the centre of your table. Order a beer or some terrible house wine, and head for the buffet. Now, just to clarify, this place isn't really *good*. I mean, it is all-you-can-eat. If you pick carefully you'll enjoy it, but it isn't top-shelf Korean BBQ. The seafood is defrosted and the nicest cuts of meat aren't guaranteed. There are big rice-cookers full of rice, vats of soup, trays of spring rolls and curry puffs. Meh. Move along. Sort yourself out with some seafood - octopus, mussells, prawns. Or some meat - kangaroo, offal, beef, pork, chicken, all in different marinades. Most importantly, condiments. You'll need a big bowl of kimchi and pickled cucumber. Take care cooking your meat, get to know the ins and outs of using a built in BBQ plate. Obviously it gets hotter as it goes along... The waiter will change the plate over once you've sufficiently dirtied it up. After you've loaded up on all-you-can-eat BBQ options, it's time for dessert. Fresh watermelon, yes. The best thing however is the little cups of deliciously refreshing chilled ginger jelly soup. Keep an eye out, they disappear off the buffet real fast. read more

6 of us came for dinner and ordered the set menu Not enough food Didn't get everything that we were supposed to get. When we queried it we were told that they don't bring it all out because they don't want to waste it.. what the.. Only got one drink. Waiting staff had no idea what they were doing. Me and 8 others went here for my friends birthday because she loves this place. I normally always go to KOBA because of their buffet (buffet hot pot and Korean BBQ are so much better!!). Apparently this place used to be buffet style but that wasn't the case when we went on Friday. We ordered 'set c' which was around $143 and came with 8-9 things (marinated beef, pork and chicken, marinated squid, 2 cooked dishes and salad) we also ordered 2 extra plates of beef, kimchi pancake, spicy rice cakes and black bean noodles. The service was good, the staff were friendly and the food tasted good however their portions are so small!!!! The total bill was $267.3 which worked out to $29.7pp. A few others and me were still a little hungry when we left which is not how you should leave a Korean BBQ restaurant! Every time I've left KOBA I've left with a food baby but this time I left and went to sushi train Nevertheless, it was a good experience and I'll definitely be coming back because the dishes actually tasted really good but I won't be coming back for the BBQ! read more

It's not classy or fancy but my partner in crime and I love this place none the less! We first ate here when he was on some kind of diet, and the fact that you can come here and eat a whole lot of meat and a whole lot of vegetables appealed perfectly. The deal is, a hot plate on the table, lots of meat to select from, as well as some delicious vegies - my favourites being the sour cucumber and the kim chee - as well as some deep fried sides, rice, and even dessert - which consists of fresh fruit, ice cream and jelly cups (the mango one is goooood)! All the food is laid out in buffet style, you go and grab what you want and take it back to your table to eat and / or prepare. The novelty of this can be fun - and it's great if you want to spend time chatting with friends over an extended meal. The meat is generally 'as good as you make it' -if you cook it badly, it will be crap! You can also marinate it yourself with plenty of sauces to choose from. For a fancy meal out, this isn't the place but for a fun, different and enjoyable meal (as long as you're not primarily a vegetable eating being) then Korean BBQ is a good choice! read more
