In terms of square footage, I believe this store is the biggest Asian market in Iowa City. To my…read moreknowledge, it is the only one that sometimes has fresh roast duck and (it is rumored) char siu! I only did one quick run through to check it out, but hope to come back soon!

At first I was a little hesitant in switching up my grocery store routine, but here is what makes…read morethis market different from the others -- 1. Friendly face that greets you as you walk through their doors. Most Asian grocery stores do not care to interact with you, let alone smile at you. 2. Their goal of a "world fresh market" is to be able to provide whatever ingredients you are unable to find at other stores. I was approached by one of the employees and he offered to place an order for whatever I needed to make the meals i want. 3. They can slice up large meats for you. I had them slice pork belly into thin pieces so I did not have to chop it up myself at home. From what I see so far, everyone I have interacted at this market goes above and beyond to make your experience as good as possible. As with every new market, It starts off slow and without the large turnover of vegetables. Hopefully as business grows for them, they can start living up to the "fresh" part of their name. Kudos to them for trying to make a difference in the Coralville community. Providing fresh exotic fruits that are rarely seen in other stores and having fresh lobsters? It is extremely rare to have fresh seafood, let alone live ones as Iowa is no where near the coasts. I am excited to see what else the have planned for the future food wise :)

With all of the adjustments to everyday life caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, discovering that I…read morecan get sustainably-caught, small-boat harvested, wild Alaskan seafood shipped to my doorstep via this audacious little company in Galesburg, IL is probably the most positive one. Prior to last spring, you would not have been able to convince me that it made sense to spend $120-$130 a month to have 4.5 pounds of seafood shipped to me, but when our standard supply chain broke down and it was nearly impossible to get proteins at the grocery store I started to look for other options. I love seafood, so that is what I looked for first, trying a couple of "fresh from ... (name your place)" options. I dipped my toe into the Sitka Salmon Shares world by buying a "bounty sale" box of sablefish, also known as black cod. I did a side-by-side comparison of the SSS sablefish and another Alaskan seafood company that ships throughout the US and the difference in quality was astounding. I signed up for SSS's premium seafood subscription shortly thereafter. SSS is a different kind of company - a "Community Supported Fishery" akin to the CSA's you might be familiar with from your local farmer's market. While they project the contents of each monthly box ahead of time, the mix of what you receive depends upon the harvest. No matter what type of seafood you receive, you can expect impeccable quality, as the CSF model allows the small boat fishermen-owners and trusted partners to handle their catch in an artisanal way -- eg, line caught, immediately bled and put on ice, processed and deep frozen for shipment. All fish is sushi-grade, and in most cases you get traceability back to the boat that caught it and the date of harvest. Does all of that matter? I maintain that it does ... for example I have never received a piece of fish from SSS that was bruised from rough handling, and that does indeed make a difference in taste and texture. If you are a fan of seafood check out their "Freezer Sale" -- right now I believe they have a salmon sampler and albacore tuna available. I bet that if you do give a freezer sale box a try, you will soon find yourself poring over their subscriptions trying to decide which one to pick. If it's not the best fish you've ever had? They have fabulous customer service, contact them and surely they will do right by you. As for me? I expect I will be a subscriber for life.
