My insurance changed when my husband retired and I had to switch optometrists. Great Lakes Optometry is 2 hours away from where I live ( closest provider who takes my insurance). I scheduled an exam to get contacts last winter/spring, 2025.They seem to have lots of equipment and tests.... more than I have ever been given... I'm 51, I started wearing glasses when I was 3. Upon all the tests Great Lakes Optometry put me through, it was determined i needed flushes and lubricating methods and presription drops. I followed the regiment to see no improvement . 9 months later my hormone replacement therapy precription was changed with a different doctor and everything improved. When I filled out the paper work here I answered several questions about my health history. They used this info to try and upsell me on tests that rendered no improvement. Then my trial contacts took 6 weeks to come in. I put them in and they were blurry. so I made the 2 hour drive each way once again to get my prescription corrected and to let the dr know the dry eyes weren't improving, either He sent in for another set of trials that came several weeks later and were also blurry. I suggested just going back to the precription I had from my previous optometrist and his ego seemed to be tarnished by that and he refused to do that. This place is smoke and mirrors... he is not a good optometrist. Hes got this dry eye equipment he uses to upsell you. Look at the Facebook page, its what they push... He should start with getting prescriptions accurate. read more

Professional, efficient, and incredibly kind! Great Lakes Optometry saved our vacation! The morning after our first night in Sault Ste Marie my husband realized that he forgot to pack his glasses and contacts.. he is unable to see without lenses. In a frenzy, we reached out to Great Lakes Optometry and had his prescription faxed over from our optometrist back home. The moment the fax was received, Great Lakes Optometry supplied us with enough lenses to get through our vacation as well as solution and a case. We were thrilled and so appreciative of their help. I have been a patient of Great Lakes Optometry for 10+ years..I called today and was told that they no longer take my insurance that they have taken all along...I JUST saw them last March and now, even though my frames(which are supposed to be covered if something happens to them) are NOT...I also called due to Vertigo that I am suffering from as I used to need prisms to fuse my eyes...If I want to pay $115 then by all MEANS they will see me...Now, the closest place is in Manistique, over 2 hours away from me on a GOOD day...To say I'm upset and disappointed is definitely an understatement...Its hard ENOUGH to find healthcare without having THIS happen...At the least, a letter should have been sent to give a heads up...Common courtesy costs NOTHING!!!! read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS BUSINESS. After I informed them that it had been many years since I had an eye exam, and that at 62 I was now experiencing distance issues; they gave an eye exam that barely lasted 2 minutes. They shoved a box of glasses at me and said "pick one"; never offering any assistance in the selection. They then never called to tell me to pick up my glasses. Waited nearly a month and then I called them and they were terse and irritable. Picked up glasses and no one offered to see if they fit or anything. read more

I have never been charged $900 for any glasses before this. Received my insurance EBO and the charge was $900 for the eye exam, and glasses. Will not be going back again. Outrageous! read more

First eye exam in many years, Dr. Matthews was very professional and thorough. Receptionist was great at helping with new frames and very helpful when it came to my insurance. Will be going back. read more
