My wife and I live in Austin and she'll come w/ me to Cary to visit my parents, sis, and her family once/year while I come out quarterly to help my family out. My wife's a Certified Somm. (CMS) and works for an importer/supplier now so I'm alwaus trying to scope out places to take we her to (or avoid) on my visits by myself. Great Grapes is a keeper. Very Knowledgeable help (a friend here lived in Italy and was very gracious with his time too) and I manages to strike gold on 2 finds that won't break the bank but are simply those lucky price point flavor profiles you can get for $18-$25/bottle...a real steal! The shop is clean, organized, and has a nice little tasting section--the 2 bottles I walked out with were both a result of the store opening a bottle of each for me to buy a glass, so that's an above and beyond effort--not to make the sale--but since I stated I was just in to try a glass or two, it was simply to see me walk away pleased with my sampling. 5 stars!!! Great local bottle shop in Cary. I was in the area and wanted to get wines from some place local, and this was the closest spot. I was looking for some white wines that were not too much on the sweeter side and walked out a happy customer. One of the employees was extremely kind and helpful in suggesting some great budget wines. The wines are divided by their region, so it's easy to shop according to that. They have a large selection of both reds and whites and they also had some great discounts on a lot of wines. There's parking right outside the store, and also ample parking in the area where the store is located. I look forward to going back whenever I am in the area next. read more

Small, local, well stocked shop. This is the ONLY place in NC I can find my favorite wine because it's produced in NJ. I like to order mine online so I can make sure they have it in stock. Such a cute wine store!! Boyfriend and I were in the area visiting The Butcher's Market and decided to stop in since we needed a wine to pair with dinner. We picked up 3 bottles of wine since you get an extra discount for purchasing 3. They also have a small craft beer selection. Staff is both friendly and extremely knowledgable! Great Grapes is a cute locally-owned wine and beer shop in Saltbox Village. I came here once just to browse and the gentleman working there gave me fantastic wine recommendations based on what I liked. His advice was spot-on and the wine he recommended was exactly what I wanted. There is a nice selection of unique wines and also the popular ones you can get in the grocery store. Sign up for their email list because they will notify you of sales. There are parakeets chirping in the middle of the shop and then there is also a craft beer selection. Great Grapes is located off of Kildaire Farm, and after today's visit I plan to incorporate them into my weekly Whole Foods/Trader Joes shopping ritual. They carry a vast selection of excellent wines, both foreign and domestic, each displayed with deeply informative tasting notes. They also carry a phenomenal selection of champagnes and sparkling wines, and hard-to-find bottled beers. The biggest sell for me was the impressive selection of organic wines they carry, this is my new thing when it comes to wine and the proprietors clearly have encyclopedic knowledge on the subject. read more

I have been coming to Great Grapes since just after they opened and it is my goto place for great wine. The staff is always friendly and helpful - while there are some pricey bottles, the shop's focus is on affordable, everyday selections (not that I drink wine _everyday_) I love wine, but not the hassle of choosing wine. I really like to focus on cooking. So after my menu making and shopping are completed my next stop is Great Grapes. All I need to do is lay out my menu and a price range and Gene & Matt provide thier expert wine guidance. Awesome little find in Cary! I love their descriptions of their wines...it really makes selections and pairing really easy. I like that they stock up on international and local wines. Although I am biased for Monterey and Napa-produced wines, I am glad to see such an interesting variety. My current favorites (and I may update this when I sample some more of their selection): 1. As a fan of good beer I feel like I've been to just about every bottle shop in Raleigh at this point and while venturing out Cary way I stumbled upon this place. My initial thoughts looking from the outside was that it would be another wine shop trying to cash in on the beer craze. However, once I walked in I realized that they are as serious about beer as they are about wine. The first time I stopped in were closing, but the friendly fellow behind the counter kept the place open for a bit for us to look around. I ended up opting for a Belgian beer I had not tried yet and the shop owner started a conversation over the flavors I could expect as well as noting that he was a big fan of the brewery in question (Brasserie Fantôme). We talked a bit about sour beers beers and even a bit about the shelf life of hop forward beers. Not being a wine guy I can't speak to the selection buy the beer selection is quite good. Lots of mix and match singles from all over the world. While bigger selections do exist in the Triangle this place is still worth checking out especially for those in or near Cary. read more

Great Grapes is easily the best wine store I've ever visited. Everything in the store is well curated, and will appeal to any taste. I really feel like a valued customer every time I go there. The staff has grown to learn my tastes, and every recommendation has been spot on. They regularly have tastings that showcase a variety of interesting and delicious wines. My favorite spot is the back room, where they often have amazing deals. Usually Gene (the owner) has made a great deal on wines that the distributor is ready to move at a great rate. These are never bad wines, they're usually great deals sold on the cheap when a distributor needs to make room for new stock. They also have a very nice beer selection. The best thing about Great Grapes is the people that work there. I usually stop in on Friday nights after getting dinner from The Meat House and before going to Sugar Buzz for dessert. All I have to do is tell them what I am looking for and a price range and they have always picked out a great bottle(or two) of wine for me. My friend and I came in to great grapes for the first time on Saturday evening. We were offered a very nice wine tasting and each bought one bottle afterwards. When we went to check out, we noticed the cashier also had a glass of wine he was enjoying himself. I purchased a four pack of beer along with a bottle of wine that were all bagged together. As we were walking to the house, everything that was in the paper bag fell through to the sidewalk and broke. We went back within an hour hoping to get an exchange for the broken wine bottle, we were then told that there was nothing that they could do once the wine left the facility. I understand this was a policy, but also I felt like there could have been more solutions available for him to offer and we honestly felt like they didn't really care; even 20% off the next bottle we purchased (especially because it was our very first time here ). We left disappointed and with a salty taste in our mouths. We will not be back. read more

I know next to nothing about wine but their beer selection is amazing. A very nice display with tasting notes and a scoring system for each individual beer. You can even buy single beers you'd normally only find in other stores in six-packs at no mark up. Very warm atmosphere and the woman behind the counter was very friendly. There was only one worker on staff when I was there however, and it seemed like she could have easily gotten overwhelmed if someone were to ask for advice while others were waiting to be checked out. She also mentioned that she knew very little about beer, but I don't see that being too much of a problem with the extensive tasting notes. read more

Very good selection of wines and beers. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and eager to share. Some shops like this give an air of superiority when you walk in. I don't get that feel here. Instead I feel welcome and comfortable. They always have bottles open to taste and welcome you to stand around and chat while you enjoy trying something you would otherwise not get to. They regularly schedule events of interest and everything isn't loaded up on Saturday like so many other places. They always tote your boxes out to the car. Prices are good and usually easy to find, not some mystery search like some stores. They have good notes on most displays helping you understand what you are looking at. They offer deals on multiple bottles, they compare in price to "big stores" so no need to pass this up because you think you are saving big bucks. He even regularly offers a better alternative to the cheap nasty stuff that Trader Joe's sells down the road. read more

This is my favorite wine store in the area, by far! Every time I go in there the staff is so helpful. I've never been steered wrong with their suggestions. The best part is they don't go for the expensive bottles, they find fairly priced wines that are delicious, so you get good quality for a great price. Their wine tastings are always fun, the staff is extremely knowledgable and ready to educate you. I always go to Great Grapes whenever I need to order wine for gifts from my boss/the company to clients or other very important people. Matt is our contact there and he always does a fantastic job to make sure we order the best Aquinas wine they can find. He also will ship the wine along with any other gift items I may have. I have been a loyal customer here for 2 years, but sadly, I don't think I will be back. I am no longer greeted when I come in, as one person is busy at the register and the other is in a long conversation with customers after they have checked out. This has happened a couple of times now. When I bother the person at the register to ask if there is any tasting(as there are glasses and bottles out) I am informed that I cannot taste unless I intend to buy the wine they are tasting. In the past, they have always cheerfully offered samples and I ALWAYS buy several bottles, though not necessarily what I tasted. I guess my expectations are just too high but it seems they are moving away from the cozy service and more toward the cost-cutting, big-time wine store. read more

I have been to Great Grapes about 5-6 times within about a years time. Thinking that this small wine/beer store would be a good place to have a connection with the employees and have a cool place to buy beer I was wrong. The employee named Matt who is typically in there has lied to me many times leading up to this point of writing a bad review. As any small beer place would normally have regulars coming in all the time, they will hook up them up with the harder to get beers. One of my friends is one of those people who gets limited stuff from Grate Grapes. After him telling me about beers he had gotten there from Matt I quickly drove up to get some to be lied to saying "we never got any in this year". I addressed him saying my friend just bought some from you, he continued to deny it. This has happened twice, first time with the DFH Bitches brew when it came out and Bells Hopslam. This also happened when I called about beers my friend had just purchased 10 minutes before calling. I tried to like this place but Matt being two faced turned me away. I would not spend your money here. Their website says "At Great Grapes we don't sell wine...we sell service." Guess what? You don't sell service.
