We had a great experience at Great Gold last night in Truckee. The restaurant was crowded but that did not prevent an excellent experience. Brooke took fantastic care of us and made some great suggestions on the menu and wine. The wait and support staff were friendly and attentive. We asked for the Chef's Menu and were thrilled with all four courses and the WINE PAIRINGS were terrific! Highlights included the Kale Caesar, Pork Belly Meatballs, Lamb Shank, several types of pasta and cannollis for dessert. I would eat that Kale Caesar every day. Came here as my friends and I were headed back from a Tahoe trip. Came here on a Sunday night and the place was packed, I definitely recommend getting a resy if you are in the area! We all got a combo of a bunch of different dishes. We started with the Caesar salad (was amazing!) and the meatballs which were the perfect amount of rich but cozy. For mains we all got an assortment of pasta and shared the special of the night, which was the chicken parm pizza (yum!). I got the rigatoni, which comes in a spicy vodka sauce, which was delicious, rich, and comforting. Overall, I can't wait to come back here! We've given Great Gold a few chances, and this last visit was it for us. The food is good, but the prices are already high and then they tack on a surcharge on top of the bill, plus extra charges for everything -- even dipping sauces and parmesan cheese. The wine pours are tiny to the point of being laughable, and the whole experience just feels like getting nickel-and-dimed. If owners want to fund employee benefits, they should build that into their margins and menu pricing, not sneak it in as another fee at the end of the night. At these prices, this place should feel like a treat, not a hustle. We won't be back. Tomato bread was good though :) read more

I had a crummy experience here last September but wanted to come back and give it a second chance... I regret that now. The same problems that existed 9 months ago persist today. Why does it take a 15 minute line to get to the host stand every time? You finally get to the front and they think its so natural that you just wasted a quarter of an hour outside wacthing empty tables beckon. The atmosphere is stuffy and really noisy, hard to enjoy the experience. The food is ok, but really not extraordinary. OMG such a great place!!! We came from Southern California with a party of 7, and made a res here to celebrate a milestone birthday. From the outside, it looks unassuming...has a very industrial warehouse feel with both indoor and outdoor seating. The kitchen is open so you can see the chefs preparing the food, which was cool. The staff was friendly, attentive and conversational. Drinks were so good!!We had a selection of (almost all) appetizers, all amazingly delicious!! They gave us a free plate of lobster ravioli--DELICIOUS!! For dinners we had a selection of their fresh pastas and pizza. What more can I say about the food??? Delicious!!! We had a "Great" experience at Great Gold. We came in for my mom's birthday dinner. As we sat down, the waiter handed my mom a birthday card, signed by all restaurant staff. That was a nice touch. We shared the prosciutto pizza as an app. The finely sprinkled cheese on the crust was a game changer. Unfortunately the pizza had balsamic on it which I do not like. It did not state it had on the menu, so I probably would have chose another pizza. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. The chicken looked delicious. I ordered the tagliatelle. The pasta was cooked perfectly, portion size was medium- definitely could have kept going! Our hippie waiter was great. He was funny and made the night entertaining. This place was hopping on a Friday night! Love the indoor and outdoor setup and the vibe. Like any place going off the hook, it was hard to hear. I couldn't tell if they had some sound absorbing things on the ceiling but if not, maybe an idea? Ok to the food...The beef carpaccio packed a punch of flavor! Especially if you combine the beef, arugula salad, aioli, parm and truffle shavings on the fresh made flatbread in one bite - yum! The brick oven Margherita pizza was very good and I love that fresh ingredient taste. I was torn between pasta or pizza so will have to go back and try some pasta next time. The person next to me had hot salami pizza and that actually looked really scrumptious as well. Grilled broccolini was also good and would recommended - although I would prefer a little more time on the grill to get some char and to make it less al dente. The server/bartender I had, Liz, is probably the friendliest and best customer service I have ever received. 5 Stars for her and she deserves a raise!! I hear they are opening up a second location in Reno at the Rancharra maybe later this year which I am really looking forward to if that is true. Way off the tourist trails of downtown and the resorts, this is in an industrial area and next to a paint store :). From outside you might be forgiven for thinking you're at the wrong place, but get inside and you a gorgeous modern industrial design with open kitchen and good buzzy ambiance. Our favorite "fancy" restaurant in town for special treats the last few years. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, really, but a few of our favourites are the sunflower caesar salad, penne with burrata, beet ravioli, ragu, and gelato with mint and olive oil. The staff is always on point and knowledgeable. We will be back as this has recently been happily re-added to our go-to list. The reason for 4 stars is the quality seems to vary. This seemed to happen last year, so we slowly stopped visiting after a few disappointments. Recently, I was convinced to give it another try and was truly blown away. The crust was great and I love the amount of garlic it had. I got the pork belly meatballs and the sunflower Caesar salad. The meatballs were so tasty and the white beans were an unexpected pairing that was delicious. The salad had the perfect crunch and flavor. Unfortunately we were all full so we didn't try any of their desserts but I bet they were also great. Service was good. Came to grab some take out to bring back to the cabin in Truckee. Such a cute little spot! Came in around 630ish on a Sunday night and we almost wasn't able to order take out. We tried to call in and/or order online but it wasn't available. The hostess had to go to the back to ask the chef if they would allow a take out order and we were lucky enough to get our order approved. Heard some parties come in after to dine in and the wait was about an hour. I would have loved to stay and eat in as it was such a nice place! We ordered 2 pizzas - the prosciutto and arugula and the Bianca. We all seemed to like the prosciutto and arugula more but were also big arugula fans. We also got the pizza sauces but didn't think it was really worth it. Tasted like a homemade ranch sauce with lots of dill. We also got 2 pastas - the spaghetti and the rigatoni. I'm not a big fan of spaghetti but the rest of the party I shared the food with seemed to like both. The wait for takeout was about 20 mins. I'd come back to dine in and for the pizzas! We came with family and friends and this place was booming! We were lucky to get a reservation as they were very hard to get. Our waiters were very kind and outgoing, excellent service throughout the night. I ordered the Burrata Margarita pizza and boy was that good! The dough and crust were baked perfectly, crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The cheese and basil were fresh and generous. And how could I forget the piles of shredded cheese on top. Out friend got the gluten free pasta and they said it was one of the best if not the best GF pastas they ever had. First time. Great Gold was a perfect place to stop for dinner for the six of us, as we were on our way to Palisades for an event the next day. Our friends had been there before as they used to live in Truckee and it's one of their favorite places to go. Luckily we were there early right before they opened at 5 (we had no reservations), but we got a table! The menu was awesome with so many choices. My hubby and I ordered the pesto pasta which was divine! Fresh, beautiful and delicious. We also ordered the three cheese pizza which I also added anchovies to half, since it was offered as an add-on, on the menu! Also delicious, and only wish they had brought it to the table hot as it had already cooled down by the time it was brought to our table. Our friends ordered many other things, including the Maitake pizza, Panzanella salad and the pappardelle with lamb ragu, which was amazing. The pappardelle dish was the table favorite! I'm getting that for myself next time! For dessert we ordered an affogato and a scoop of the spumoni...again everything was amazing and delicious. Best affogato anywhere! Wow! Service from Jordan was bright and cheery. She was very helpful and pleasant. The prices are great for the pizzas as they were bigger than expected. The prices for the entrées are a bit pricier for the portion size, but worth it for special occasions and great quality food. Wonderful place with a great vibe! So much about our dinner was amazing. We got there for our 5:45pm reservation. The place was pretty empty and frankly quite nice from a noise level perspective. As the restaurant filled for the evening, the noise level got progressively louder. Our server was amazing. She was attentive and welcoming. She always made sure our water glasses were topped off and our table was always wiped clean. I had the Pappardelle with Lamb. In a word, amazing. What a delicious combination of flavors, textures and richness. Perfection. A friend had the Rigatoni allá Vodka. Another amazing dish. Perfect blend of flavors. My wife had the Bucatini Carbonara. An extremely rich dish. A bIt too rich for my taste. Most of it came home with us. My Nephew had the 3-Cheese Pizza with Pepperoni. I'm not a Pizza connoisseur, but felt it can best be described as "floppy". The crust was good but the Pizza bottom had no structure or snap to it. A nice place for Italian in Truckee. Arguably the best Italian in Tahoe. Authentic, classic dishes, great flavors, locally sourced if possible. Menu offers a variety of options, but not so extensive you get lost. Staff was very friendly, knew their stuff with great recommendations (even in little stuff like complimentary Calabrian chile oil to match the Bianca Pizza). Wow. The only thing I regret here is being late on the news that this place exists. Every bite of this dinner, dessert and every sip of wine was exceptional. The entire staff was so friendly, warm and engaging, they made us feel right at home. We had a short wait until our table was ready and sat at the bar with wine and ordered the tomato bread which was out of this world. We shared a few apps, pasta and pizza, each were perfection. The chef brought a bite or two to the table which was an added special touch. Every moment was delicious, filled with hospitality, local knowledge and care for our evening and experience. Gray gold is pretty fancy, but I still saw some kids. Definitely my favorite place for pizza hands-down in all of Truckee if not my favorite place to eat overall. They nailed the pizza crust (soft and chewy, sprinkled with fresh Parmesan... That was just a cherry on top) and the service is just excellent. All their pastas were good but my favorite was the rigatoni. The salad and broccolini also spectacular. I personally was not a big fan of the meatball (too much breading) and the Cacio E Pepe sauce was pretty heavy. But definitely still loved by everybody at the table. In fact we ordered a second plate of cacio e Pepe for the kids. The least favorite part was the Cabernet Sauvignon, especially for the price ($17), but overall can't wait to return! I want to love Great Gold, but our experience was definitely average. It's another one of those places that creates a high price point for average food, beverage, and ambiance. The space is tucked away, off the beaten path, in an industrial part of Truckee. The floor plan is open, consisting of one moderate size room & an open kitchen. It's nicely lit, and fairly modern/minimalist in decor. We sat at the bar for dinner. Our bartender/server was very kind, but seemed a bit nervous. She suggested the Campanelle pasta which is supposedly homemade ($28). It was described as a Pesto and Cacio e Pepe pasta. Lawd knows I LOVE my Cacio e Pepe. But alas, it wasn't really Cacio e Pepe, but a pesto that had parmesan & pepper as well. It did not seem homemade either. My husband scarfed down his Tonarrelli Carbonara ($32) which looked more like an actual Cacio e Pepe to me. *Sigh*. The Focaccia bread was delicious & well seasoned. And our Fingerling Potatoes were pretty good as well. They had some sort of glaze on them that made them a tad sweet almost like an orange chicken sauce. The Tiramisu was a miss. It was very custardy with no texture. I was also surprised not to see ANY California wines on the menu. I understand they are aiming for authentic Italian, but it just didn't really land for me. Wine by the glass starts at $15, and a bottle starts at $60. So you do not get a discount for ordering a bottle. Might as well order by the glass in case you want to switch up your varietal. Our bill came out to $215 (with tip) for an "okay" dinner for two. They add a (disclosed) 6% healthcare fee to the bill. This review is way overdue. We came here for the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve, and were so delighted by the entire experience. The food was excellent, the dining room was lively, and the service was welcoming and attentive. This is one of the nicer spots for dining out in Truckee, so it's great for a celebration, date night or just a nice dinner out. Homemade pasta, wood fired pizza. Food was delicious, I would call this more of an Italian restaurant. It was way fancier than I thought it would be. I felt a bit underdressed as I just thought it was some low key pizza place but it's really nice inside and very pricey. Interesting that it's located in a commercial area outside of downtown but they have outdoor seating and ample tables inside. Full bar with good drinks. They even had gluten free pasta which was a plus for me. I wish they had a gluten free pizza dough. I ordered an extra meatball on my pasta and for $7 more it was a lot smaller than I thought it would be although very tasty. Service was slow. Our waitress just kinda stopped coming to our table and then we were asking random staff for assistance so that was weird but at least we still got help as they did seem to have a lot of staff. read more
