It's possibly the last cool weather weekend of the spring before the crushing heat of summer…read morearrives in Central Texas. We want to go camping, and by "we", I mean 4 fairly high maintenance adults, 2 tenderfoot youngsters, and 1 small dog. We can't take Friday off to spend half a day driving, so what do we do? Amazingly, we found the perfect destination within 45 minutes of Austin and they still had spaces available on Tuesday afternoon. Reservations made in a snap online for Taylor Park! Why do I say perfect? For $22 per night (a bit steep as camping goes, but I'm okay with that, especially split between 2 families), we enjoyed the following: - electricity - fresh water - BBQ grill - fire pit - covered pavilion with large picnic wooden table - adjacent shady hiking trails - lakeside fishing within a 10 minute hike - clean showers, sinks, and toilets within a 5 minute walk - quiet but friendly neighbors - paved pathways for kids on scooters & bikes - playscape - dog friendly - open spaces for kite flying - swimming beach at Fox Park & other adjacent parks entry covered for the 3 days of our stay I have no idea how this place wasn't already booked solid. I can only surmise that since Granger Lake is fairly new as area lakes go (it was built only in 1980), it just isn't as well known as other nearby spots like Inks Lake and Bastrop State Park. Maybe the Army Corps of Engineers parks aren't as well promoted as our state & LCRA parks? I highly recommend visiting this and any of the Granger Lake parks during the spring, as magnificent wildflower displays can be seen from several areas of the parks. The hike trail takes you through very shaded, forested paths and then suddenly, you round the bend to see a glorious field of 10 different kinds of flowers (including thick bluebonnets and blooming prickly pear cacti). The kids loved all of the wildlife they could see up close: pretty birds, butterflies, fish, snails, and so on. This is Central Texas! Tips: - Be sure to pack in firewood for your pit, as they don't sell it here. We picked some up at Harley's on 183 before we headed out of Austin. - Pack a hose for the faucets. There are 2 at each site. - Use a tarp or other ground cover under your tent. The grass is full of sharp sticker burrs. - Bring a hammock! You'll have trees and the covered pavilion to use as hanging points. - Use 45N and 130 tolls roads to avoid Friday rush hour traffic. We beat our friends by 20 minutes and they were ahead of us until they hit the traffic in Round Rock. - Watch out for the poison ivy & oak on the trails. - Ask the guard house to note on the map which shower houses have hot water; not all of them do. - Swimming is not really feasible at Taylor Park unless you bring a boat. We drove about 7 minutes down the road to Wilson Fox Park for their swim beach (which is not dog friendly, so you'll have to figure out what to do with any pups in your party). - Read reviews of Granger Lake http://www.yelp.com/biz/granger-lake-granger for more info about the cool hike experience (including two antique bridges). - Leave only footprints, take only photos :-)

We went for a hike there right after a big storm and the grounds were so green and vibrant. We mostly stuck to the Onion Creek Trail as it is paved; however, the storm brought in mud to a few places on the trail, so be prepared to maneuver or wear proper footwear if you go during rainy season. Many families line up to take pictures in front of the upper falls (outside the Smith visitor center), so go early if you'd like a picture free of other guests. We then went to the lower falls area where there is an expanse of limestone (I believe) to get to the falls. There's a very small beach and swimming hole area that many families were enjoying. It's important to note that dogs can't enter any of the water at this park. The park also had multiple designated fishing areas as well. We drove around the campgrounds and they have well-maintained water + electric sites at every site. We would highly recommend a visit if you're in the Austin area.

It's less than a 2-hour drive from Houston and under an hour from Austin, which makes it an easy add to a road trip. I especially appreciated that the entrance is right off Highway 71, so you're not wasting a bunch of time driving deep into back roads just to get to the park. We visited on a beautiful Saturday in January -- sunny and in the 50s, basically perfect hiking weather. While there are plenty of trees throughout the park, many of the trails are fairly exposed, so you get a lot of sun. Definitely bring sunscreen, even in cooler weather. The trails are wide and well-maintained, with sand and rocks laid down in many areas, making them easy to walk. The terrain is nicely hilly but nothing too difficult (we did about 4 miles total). One thing to note: trail signage is a bit limited, and it would be easy to get turned around and know where to turn. Thankfully, I had decent cell reception (T-Mobile) and was able to use Google Maps to track where we were. Parking was easy, the staff were friendly, and the landscape was beautiful. We used our Texas State Parks annual pass, which saved us the $15 entrance fee, and the entry process was quick and simple. The line of cars trying to get in was only 2. I'd love to come back in the spring when everything is blooming. Overall, a great stop if you want scenic views, manageable trails, and a convenient location. Highly recommend if you're on your way to Houston or Austin. There's also a Buccees just a few miles away!

I love the pine trees and views from some of the trails. The campground is lovely as well. Very clean. Spaces are large. People are respectful. But... A big con is the traffic noise at night! A loud, long crash woke me up in the middle of the night, with a second crash crashing into the debris from the first one. That whole incident kept me up for 2 hours. I don't know if the other campgrounds in the park are any better. The park is nestled in a populated area so I doubt it. But the trails and area are beautiful!! So I would definitely recommend for hiking!! Not so much tent camping... (maybe it's better in an RV?).

The park is very quiet at night--it seems like most of the other campers went to bed early. The asphalt parking per campsite is very long as if designed for trailers. We were able to fit three passenger vehicles in its entire length. There were trails in this park but most of the people in our group didn't have the time or energy to explore them. Visitors can also swim in the lake, play volleyball, have picnics, canoe, and go fishing. The scenery of the park is lovely. The restrooms/showers building was clean and very good compared to my past experiences with campground restrooms. The only things I would've wanted were handsoap and fewer bugs in the restroom. Rachel in the North Shores office was very helpful and kind. I arrived dangerously close to the office closing time to claim our campsites and she patiently wrote out several vehicle permits for the cars in our group, explained rules about overflow parking, and even personally went out to our campsites 63 and 65 to show me where they were. Rachel also wrote the gate code on our vehicle permits in case we were entering and leaving the park late at night. The day use fee is $4 per person. Occupying a campsite is another fee.
