I first learned about Great Dane Brewing when I visited the beautiful Great Dane Brewery in Sendai Japan. This location is also special. They not only brew their beer on premises, but it's easily located right off the freeway. It's a handsome building with lots of parking. They have a great selection of rich and tasty beer. Full bar. The friendly service was very personable and professional. My server even acknowledged my Great Dane Brewing shirt from Sendai that I especially wore that day. The food was awesome. I love this brewery for their variety of full flavored beers and this location for their pub grub with a German slant to it. This location is right off the highway with lots of parking and near a hotel. The building itself looked historical, in a curious-discovery sort of way. Friendly service. Come on! Just STOP pretending you care about hospitality, food or any resemblance of a restaurant. Tues night early Dec, maybe six ppl at bar (three employee from earlier shift). Me - end of bar, single. She walks by me to clean glasses three times, no glance. The other tender was in a state of funk reconciling numerous bills from large party. Too much math or simply, guests for him? A couple enters and sits next to me. The wife says; "has she seen you?". No. Another 8 minutes (the other guy started timing) and finally tender #1 says "can I get you anything". Oh, no I will just site here admiring your filthy bar. Another five guys step and order daily beer special "weiss". They had to return two pints due to "off flavor"! and now ...still waiting to puke dinner. Notice I did not take the time to mention the inedible food I was served. Maybe bad night for some reason but inexcusable. So ... I would suggest the owners of this fine establishment actually spend time here - maybe under cover. For apps we got the onion blossom, fried pickles and cheesecurds. I don't like onions so didn't even try those. The breading on the pickles was very good but the pickles themselves were a little too thick for my fried pickle liking. The cheese curds were honestly some of the best I've had in the area in awhile. Crispy crunchy outside, squeaky pull apart inside, and dripping grease! If there is one thing I'm a sucker for it's MAC AND CHEESE! I wanted this to be as amazing as it looks and don't get me wrong it was good but the pasta itself lacked a lot of flavor. I had to ask for extra barbecue just to muster through the bland pasta. The cavatappi noodles themselves were perfectly cooked and the brisket was nice and tender. If the dish itself aside from the barbecue had more flavor this would be a 10/10! We went on a Thursday afternoon so it was quiet and relaxed. Love the bar area. The lighting was cool, decor fun. As the owner of 2 Great Danes, I was attracted as soon as I spotted the place! Sat alone at the bar. I asked the bartender how they started and got their name... He said he was brand new and had no idea. Oh well... The place was EMPTY (Tuesday night). But online reviews were good so I decided to stay. I ordered a salad and a beer. Both were fine. How did I find it? I was stuck staying in the (only) nearby hotel by myself on a business trip. Great location right off the highway and conveniently located next door to the Marriott Courtyard. During our three day ski trip we ate here twice. Once for dinner and once for lunch. Decent food and drinks. Great service. Covid: Wear a mask or don't come inside. All the booths are marked off every other one. The ones for use each have a bottle of hand sanitizer. Carb up before hitting the slopes. Their fries are good. Dinner: bacon mac-n-cheese with a soft pretzel; chicken Caesar wrap with fries; chicken wrap with coleslaw. Lunch: Cheese curds appetizer; bacon cheeseburger on a pretzel bun; chicken sandwich with their spiciest habanero sauce (almost too spicy but our teenage son enjoyed it); chicken fingers basket. Was in town Friday night & Great Dane was my first stop. Beertender Conor was friendly & when I started asking about other breweries he grabbed Bob... who knowledgeable and told me of two breweries in nearby towns that were worth the drive. I'm attaching menu pics because when I asked them about the Mexican Rice Bowl they said they didn't have it. "There are all sorts of menus online of food we don't have". I told them I was taking pics because I was told when the rest of my friends got to town, this would be where we were dining. I liked the tap room; large and spacious. Big windows to the brewvhouse... but another brewery told me their beers are brewed in Madison. Made no difference to me, it was delicious. I told Conor my day was a marathon not a sprint so I wouldn't having a flight and would like one of their lowest ABV beers... opted for the Stone of Scone Scotch ale. For dinner I opted for the Mayan Chicken wrap with pub fries. Tamika was our server; she was funny and attentive. I chuckled when she was taking our drink orders I asked whether the Mayan Chicken was grilled or fried? She replied: I'm sorry I'm not taking food questions at the moment. Our table of seven all laughed with her. Three ladies had the Southwest Tortellini and all said how good it was. Another had one of the Schnitzel's and couldn't stop raving about it. One guy had the Old Glory Cheese Curds as an app followed by the Wisconsin-Style-Cheddar-Mac w brisket. I didn't hear what his wife said to Tamika but it was sent back & taken off their check. I enjoyed both my stops in to Great Dane, a beer on the tap room side and dinner in the restaurant. Beertenders Conor and Bob were lovely and server Tamika was funny and great. Dec 26 Review: Came for an early dinner and a beer. The beer is good, not amazing but good. The service was excellent and our server really took care of us. The food was good, but amazing but good. Our son loved his Mac and Cheese with the pretzel stick. My wife and I got wraps and liked them. My wife liked the fries a lot. They really "shine" is COVID safety, great spacing of tables, hand sanitizer at the table, etc. We liked it well enough to return again and it is just a short walk from the Marriott Courtyard hotel. When it comes to the beers and service this place is great! The food I had unfortunately was subpar with the exception of the Cheese Curds those were amazing!!! I ordered a 5 beer flight and that was really good and I am now a huge fan of their Stone of Scone ale. For dinner I ordered the fish taco and was not impressed. While you get three tacos they are mostly compromised of lettuce with very little fish and the tortillas were slightly cold. This place was BUSY when I went, so I was a bit surprised when the food wasn't so good. I got the Mexican bowl and it didn't come with all the toppings that the menu said it did. The sweet potato I ordered with it also wasn't fully cooked, so I couldn't eat it. The inside is nice, it's an absolutely massive place. The servers/staff were also super nice, but not super attentive. My friend and I had to wait at the bar for at least ten minutes before we were helped, and the bar wasn't all that busy during that time. I got their winter sangria and that was super good (and pretty cheap)! I'd definitely go back for the sangria and to try some of their other food... I've been there twice, and both times were good. First time, I had the Mayan chicken wrap, except I asked them to make a salad of it, which they did. The second time I had the southwest tortellini. It was actually good, despite how weird it sounds. I would suggest a couple changes (1) the black beans are dry, and they don't soak them long enough or cook them long enough, which makes for an unpleasant texture. There's enough going on with this dish that it really doesn't need the beans. (2) They put whole garlic cloves in the dish, and nobody wants that, especially when they're essentially raw. Skip those, too. Throw some garlic salt in there and call it a day. They serve it with garlic bread it anyway, even tho serving bread, with beans and pasta is totally unnecessary. We had a wonderful time at Great Dane yesterday. Our server was absolutely wonderful. None of us are beer drinkers, but we all had the coffee and it was very good (although I would say that the regular is slightly better than the decaf! great flavor). I had the mediterranean falafel bowl, which was just wonderful. Three falafels, hummus & pita, greens with olives and tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce. (It comes with feta but I asked for it off.) It was a great size for a meal, I was full for quite a while afterwards! The food was all very well prepared as well. My spouse had the high point harvest bowl. I will admit that I am sometimes wary of non-asian restaurants cooking tofu. However, the tofu was absolutely wonderful! I would imagine that even people who don't care for tofu would enjoy it. Went here for lunch on a Monday and the place had a pretty good crowd. Given, it was the week of Christmas, so I think a few people had off of work. I've been here many times, but never for lunch, so I was surprised how the service played out. We ended up sitting in one of the bar areas at a separate table, and the bartender became our waiter. I will say, I think he was slightly overworked this day, as we weren't really checked on and could have used some refills on drinks. Although, since he was also behind the bar filling drinks, I get why he couldn't come check on us. As for the food, its always pretty good. For our group we ended up trying three of the four soups: beer cheese and potato, West African chicken peanut stew, and brown ale onion. The West African chicken peanut will always be my favorite, actually, I think its my favorite thing on their menu. To go with the soup, we also had the Mayan chicken wrap, the Irish road reuben, and the turkey avocado. No one had any complaints. I will say, I've never been to any of the Great Dane locations and had a bad meal. They are all very consistent in the quality of food, which is greatly appreciated. read more

Growing up in Wausau and enjoying this when it was a new Restaurant and Brewery in the city has Changed a lot since I have been gone. I come back and it is not the same, or as good as it once was but it works for this City. It's a huge restaurant with two bars and plenty of seating. They also have an event space downstairs. Do not try to do same day reservations for a party over 8 because they will not accept. It was early afternoon, and they said they would not be able to accommodate that all evening/night. The food is good. I enjoy the Mac and Cheese, Fish Tacos(habanero hellfire sauce is amazing), and the high point harvest bowl. Sometimes I enjoy that they give a soup/salad/sandwhich option for when I'm feeling in mood for a lighter meal. Wings are passable. I will say if you don't sit at the bar then service will be slow. The last two times I sat at a table it took 20 minutes for cocktails or beers to arrive. One of those nights was a Sunday when barely anyone was in the restaurant. The server also didn't check on us during that time after dropping off the non-alcohol beverages. We assumed the beers would be close behind but, that was not the case until he took our order. Which 20 min is also a while to wait for your ordered to be taken. The beer: When they first opened I really enjoy the beer. Now every time is visit it seems flat and under carbonated. Maybe it's because I've been to over 200 breweries now but, I expect better quality for a place that has more then one location. I will go back and eat but, I think I'm going to start skipping the beer. Especially when their is a fantastic German brewery not far. When I order a bourbon Old Fashioned, I order it because I like bourbon and I like old fashioneds. We stopped in at the Great Dane because it is an upscale place with a great beer menu, as well. I originally wanted maple bourbon on the rocks, but they don't carry that. Then I opted for the bourbon Old Fashioned with ginger ale and olives for the garnish. What arrived at my table was the glass pictured in this review. If it contains any bourbon at all, it could be measured in droplets. Honestly, this is a glass of ginger ale with old fashioned mixture. I literally cannot believe that any self-respecting bartender mixed this up and let the wait staff take it away. If I wanted a Shirley Temple, I would have ordered a Shirley Temple. Instead of celebrating the acceptance of an offer we put in on a house, we will gulp down these terrible drinks and move on to a new pub. read more

I came here with a group of 10 and they were able to seat us right away. The space is large and they have a bar area separate from the restaurant. Our service was good and they allowed us to do separate checks. They had several beers of their own and a couple guest taps. The nice thing is you can order different sizes, not just pints. $6 for a pint was what I paid. For dinner I had the cheese curds and a salad, which I can't remember the name, but it was very good. They let me get Salmon instead of chicken and it was cooked perfectly. The cheese curds were top notch. Everyone loved them. The green chili sauce really set it apart. read more

A Northwoods gem! Drove all the way to Wausau for the youth hockey Badger State Games tourney and after a big win...the team got a little hungry! The team decided to try the Great Dane Pub & Brewery. We had about 20 people in our Wolfpack (parents and players). We barged in the joint like a pack of hungry wolves! The hostess sat us immediately as she could sense we came in with empty bellies! Of course a number of the parents tried the huuuuge selection of ales and lagers on tap. The kids drank milk and lemonade. The vibe in this place was upbeat and overwhelmingly positive based on the sub freezing weather. I scanned the menu using their handy QR code thing and settled on the Cesar wrap with mashed potatoes. Our waitress was Melanie L. (aka Mel) was patient, helpful, and courteous. She is everything you could ask for in a waitress! Right off the 51, so easy access to the establishment. Beautiful inside with plenty of seating for all. There is also an upper and lower outdoor balcony to enjoy. We had a beer tasting and wine all served quickly and was refreshing. You can take home a 6-pack, growler or crowler to go. Large variety of food items with happy hour and daily specials. I tried the Harvest Bowl with grilled chicken and tofu. This was excellent and large portions easily could have shared. It had a little too many onions but overall quite good.
