The pit itself is deep and not always easy to enter, so keep an eye out for paths that lead to the bottom. The area is pretty barren, but you may find the occasional wrecked/torched car, "art installation" (i.e., doll heads lined up on a log), or remnants of a fire pit and/or party. The emptiness and decay tends to spook visitors, so never travel alone! I used to come here a lot to go mountain biking with friends. The area has single track gravel paths for beginners and an impressive combination of man-made and natural stunts, hills, drops, bridges, and climbs for more advanced riders. I'm almost positive that the entire quarry is off limits, so watch out for cops or you might get busted for trespassing. But don't let that deter you from going! The Skytop Quarry is eerily wonderful.

BLACK RIVER TRAIL IS A GREAT PATH TO WALK, RUN OR BIKE…read more=================================================== At the beginning of April 2024 my son and daughter-in-law took my husband and I hiking along this trail a couple times on different days. It's really a nice paved and scenic path along the Black River. If you look at the website it says it is 4.5 miles, but I have a feeling it is much longer. The Black River is pretty long, so it might turn into dirt trails. You can actually walk close to the Black River, but I wouldn't recommend getting in because you might drown or get swept away to who knows where. I read a report recently about someone falling in. Parking: I'm pretty sure we parked at the Trailhead located at E. Rutland Street near Stone Drive. See photo. See the website for more parking locations. I bought a used bike and specifically asked for the bike to be tuned up. Not only did I call ahead…read morewith the request but had a lengthy conversation with the associate who took my ticket order telling I needed a complete tuneup along with having the tubes replaced. Long story short, the bike was not tuned up. The bike tech simply changed the tubes. No tune up done. Complete waste of my time. I bought a new seat and seat post and computer for the bike, which they promptly put on. No complaint there. Did a test ride in parking lot and gears had a noticeable "noise." Tech stated it just needed a few adjustments. He fiddled with the gears a bit and then noise stopped. He said I basically got a free tune up with the tire repair and everything is in order. I asked if there was a issue if I could come back. He said "of course." Did my first test ride, and there are noticeable problems with shifting. Asked for a discount since: 1. Order was improperly taken and was confirmed in store. 2. I now have to wait over two weeks for tune up; which is a major inconvenience--especially after being very CLEAR that the bike needs a full tune up. 3. Dismissed my issues with the gears in the parking lot and stated just needed a minor adjustment--no recommendation that might be a deeper issue and clearly a tune up is needed. . . which the 9 mile bike ride revealed. Chris, the store manager, completely dismissed my issue---despite telling me in shop that his associate had indeed missed the correct write up on the order. Worst customer service ever. Felt gaslighted for bringing up the issue that a full tune up was indeed needed and the shop had completely wasted my time.

The trail is no paved but the surface is primarily very fine gravel which is amenable for road biking. When we got to pine valley the trail had larger stone and was not well kept so we turned around. If you're riding a fat tire or a mountain bike this is a great trail, if your on a road bike don't plan to go much past pine valley. We had a very nice ride :)

Camillus Forrest Unique Area is indeed a unique and truly an unexpected bit of land tucked away in…read morelil ol' Camillus NY. I spent half of my life in this area and never knew such a place existed... If you, too, are unaware, then it's time you explored this little gem. We stopped by on a very random, cloudy, and cool weekday afternoon. The parking area held a couple of cars but has plenty of spots for more. At the edge of the lot, we found a map highlighting several different trails ranging in difficultly. We opted to keep it light to start and took a simple loop which saw some beautiful landscape. after running into a fellow hiker and his dog, who frequent the trails, we decided to keep going, as per the hikers rec. Let me tell ya -- if you keep going up, you'll find yourself with some unexpected and lovely views of Camillus and beyond. I would definitely not call myself a hiker, but I'm so glad we decided to keep going, totally worth the journey. And just a reminder that as you climb the elevation to find those views.. its down hill back to the parking lot.
