I have had top notch haircuts from Francis and Linda at Grateful Head. For the price, this place is a real find. My hair is straight, fine and difficult to cut well because of frontal alopecia. Both Linda and Francis did a great job and I would definitely recommend them. However, I have also had less success with other stylists at the salon so my recommendation is specific to Francis and Linda. read more

Unfortunately, I did not get the name of the lady that cut my hair, but she did a pretty decent job. I think she was Russian. All I wanted was a simple bang trim so I told her how I wanted it and so on. She listened, asked me questions, and made sure I liked what I saw along the way. Even though my hair is curly and a bit messy, she didn't mess up. We even had a nice little conversation, which doesn't happen at some salons. She is a natural and can translate any ideas I have for her concerning my hair into a killer haircut/style. I went in for a very drastic haircut: long hair to a short bob. I absolutely loved it! I brought in a picture, and told Karen exactly what I wanted. She made suggestions (BEFORE she actually cut anything off) that made the cut so much "chicer." Very professional, Karen checked in with me throughout the haircut to make sure I liked it. She showed me everything she did to make my hair look the way it did so I wouldn't wake up the next morning with unfixable and flat hair. Ask for KAREN, she is AMAZING! read more

Both my husband and I have been going to Grateful Head for haircuts, hair straightening, a good washing, and always a fine conversation along the way for years. Frances and Linda are our go-to people. Different personalities, but both very skilled stylists. I look forward to meeting with Frances, for she gives a terrific scalp massage along with a very thorough hair wash. Even though she has cut my hair for years, she never makes false assumptions.She asks what I want, listens, and then proceeds. I truly value this, for I do like a change of pace with my hair. I have long thick hair that gets very frizzy in humid weather, so once a year before I leave on vacation, Francis straightens my hair and I'm able to travel for a month or so without spending a great deal of time on my hair and still looking good. Four years later, I'm still doing this. She is a marvel and knows to straighten without destroying the hair. And the cream to all this is our conversations. She's an avid reader and NPR listener, so our conversations can bounce from one topic to another. I always come out feeling like I've visited with a good friend. Plus my hair looks good. I'm very fortunate, for Linda is a fine stylist as well. She works on both men and women's hair and has a following, so it's best to make an appointment. She's quick but doesn't rush. She's cheerful and focuses on the person in the seat while styling. She has long hair herself and understands it takes a while to blow dry long hair. My husband never makes an appointment. He shows up and wether it's Frances or Linda, he's happy. His hair is curly and it seems to grow fast, so he gets it cut about every 6-8 weeks. He likes to wash his own hair, so it's a quick hair visit each time and he always comes back repeating his conversations with them Grateful Head is clean and organized. I never wrote a review before but I'm gonna write on this one. I just walked in to ask how much it would cost me to highlight my hair and this scary looking lady at the front desk looked at me like she saw a ghost and told another one to answer my question. I said i wanted highlight and the two other stylists came to me and couldn't understand what I was saying. I JUST NEEDED HIGHLIGHTS but they started confusing me by saying that I don't know what I want...this Asian lady had a very poor English skills and the other scary looking white lady was so rude, she told me that I don't know I came there for.... I have never had such a hard time explaining what I needed to any hairstylists in my life before. They are so unprofessional and rude and dumb.. Yes, this place is inexpensive, and takes walk-ins. If you realize it for what it is, then you're fine. I'd recommend this place for kids haircuts (it beats the pants off Snippety Crickets) and for most basic men's haircuts. If you're a woman looking for hip, stylish cuts, you're probably better off elsewhere. But, if like me, you have 2 young girls and want someone who can cut in a straight line, then ask for Diana. read more

I've had my colors done in the UK, Australia and the US in uber chic, expensive salons and inexpensive friendly local ones..... and Ann at the Grateful head is by far the colorist I have have ever encountered in all my international hair experimenting. Never again. I went there with a friend who I wanted a similar haircut as. So how could it go wrong, the haircut I wanted was there in person. It was the most horrible haircut I have ever gotten. An inch ended up being 3 inches and my hair which was longer than shoulder width went above my jaw bone....eek!!! For three months I had to keep my hair up in a semi ponytail that was put up with numerous bobby pins just so it wouldnt come out. It was really bad. Three months later I went to a good salon they were able to fix it but it took that long just to get it to grow back out. When I was at the my new salon which was fabulous the lady couldn't understand what the sylist was doing she stated there were 3 hairstyles in one cut. It was horrible and I will never go to this place again it made me cry. read more

If I could give Laura a 0, that would be the appropriate rating. It's not only the poor quality service she provided, but the attitude that came with it. Hairstylists need to understand that they can offer only their professional opinion, but they need to listen to what their client ultimately wants. She became offended when I disagreed with her opinion as to how I wanted my hair done and is the most unprofessional hairstylist I've ever encountered in my life. I will NEVER go back to this place. i'm surprised this got so many good reviews... i have been there about 3 or more times. i think one time i got a decent haircut but it wasn't anything special at all, in fact i think they screwed it up but the 2 others were so bad that i give them too much credit for doing a mediocre job. first time i went this older lady who has been there for a long time cut my hair, u could tell she really didnt want to be there, and who could blame her she'd been working there for almost 20 years if i remember right. anyways, i guess i can't expect anything special but just the way she cut my hair was so impersonal and i felt like i was on an assembly line. second time i went this russian lady literally made me look russian, when i don't brush it back or anything i look like i just got back from the russian army. it was so choppy and messed up. read more

I've never written a review before but I felt that the experience I had at Grateful Head was so nice that I felt compelled to share it. I have thick curly hair and have never really had luck with styling it, instead settling for basic haircuts that never really flattered or had any spark; but when I went into Grateful Head my stylist Karen changed all that. I was greeted and seated as soon as I walked in. Then Karen asked me what I was looking for. I let her know that I wasn't really sure what I was looking and she was super nice about it, brought me some magazines to look at and then we had a really nice dialogue about what we could try. While she was cutting my hair we had a lovely and fun conversation and she really knew what she was doing, even taking the time to show me different ways to style my hair that were super cute and super easy. She gave me great advice and an even greater haircut. I left the salon feeling absolutely beautiful! Thanks Karen! read more

I've been going to Karen for years, and she gets it right. When I got a haircut I liked, I had a friend take photos of the front, back and sides. They photos are on file there, and she uses them as a guide for how I want my hair to look. She does seem to have an essential tremor in her hands, but as far as I'm concerned it doesn't seem to affect her work. I get a consistent cut. This is just about the worst haircut I have ever gotten. All I wanted was a trim, I didn't know it would be too difficult for my stylist. Actually, I wouldn't even call her a stylist. She must be an alcoholic by the way her hands SHAKE as she's cutting your hair. She insisted I take all the damage off which is, alright, but she takes off 4.5 inches. There was certainly not 4.5 inches of damage. I have worked and waited so long for my hair to reach the length it had, and she completely ruined it. I feel so sad and angry. She doesn't even wash your hair, she cuts it DRY and wetting it periodically with a squirt bottle. AWFUL. She doesn't even bother to fully comb out the hair, either. I didn't know how bad my hair was until I styled it straight. It's longer on one side. SHe also cut very thick hair completely blunt. Please never go here unless you're a guy and just need a buzz cut. I can't believe I was charged $20 for the worst haircut of my life. I feel ripped-off and tricked. LAZY. INCOMPETENT.
