Got a haircut from Linda last month. I read yelp reviews beforehand saying she cut much shorter than they asked, and this happened to me too. However, it's been a fantastic haircut which has been growing out wonderfully. I would totally recommend the grateful head to any guy looking for a good quality haircut at an affordable price (around $30). Just as long as you're prepared for a short cut. I will note that I am a man, so I can't attest to the quality of women's haircuts here. read more

We've been taking our young boys for haircuts here. The team is always so kind and patient, despite some crying the first few times my young boys sat down for their first haircuts. I usually don't leave reviews ever but it's been a few weeks and I'm still enjoying my haircut! So I walk in and get seated right away which is a very nice way to start it off. The name of the nice woman who cut my hair was Linda. I have stick straight hair that was growing out from a buzzcut, and I only trimmed it a few times with clippers so the sides and back were super shaggy. What I had in mind was a nice clean trim up on the sides with a middle part on top. When I expressed what I wanted, it was like Linda already knew what I was going for. She trimmed up the back and sides very pleasantly and cut with layers. I felt very peaceful during the whole process, it was relatively quick, I left the place feeling grateful!!! I asked for a trim - about an inch- and she must have cut off 2.5-3 inches, did an asymmetrical job on the bangs, which I will have to fix myself. I finally got around to donating my hair to locks of love and I could not have found a better place I do it. The woman cutting my hair told me exactly what to do in order to make sure my hair was used. And even when I was crying as she cut off 13 inches of hair is been growing for two years she reassured me that I was doing a good thing. Knowing I was donating she gave me 5 dollars off the haircut and free 15$ product to style my newly short hair. I tipped her well for sure! This place is clean, friendly and hospitable. The line is typically at least 30min-1hour long, but you can sign in and then go some shopping in the square. Their haircuts for women are about $18 plus tip. While the haircut I got was basic, it was done quickly and was satisfactory. The asian lady asked several times what I wanted and did check-ins to make sure I was satisfied before going further. Don't come here expecting a $100 haircut and the salon experience. Come here expecting exactly what you pay for. read more

I learned a lot about the Grateful Dead last year when I dated a guy with the last name of Garcia. Which might not sound like a big deal at first, but my real first name isn't Janney... it's Jeri - a family name that was passed down to me and I've never gone by, but I'm stuck with. Which means that had the bastard decided to keep dating me (no bitter feelings here), then my name might have become Jeri Garcia. Which is embarrassing to share, but much less so than the other "Grateful Head" stories in my repertoire. That failed relationship was the only reason I had for steering clear of this cute hair salon in San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood. But I'm glad I caved and gave it a chance. Write your name on the list and sit in the waiting area. Might want to bring a book, since it can take awhile. Services fall in the low-to-mid price range and, unlike Supercuts *shudder,* these people probably didn't flunk out of beauty school, don't necessarily hate their lives, and appear to genuinely want you to leave happy. Since appointments aren't needed, it's nice to swing by here and get your ends trimmed for a reasonable price. Picky and cheap and female? Come give this place a shot. Picky and cheap and male? OK, let's get something straight from the get-go. My hair is not now, nor has it ever been, nor will it EVER BE "stylish". It's not for lack of trying, it's simply a matter of bad genetics gone wild. My hair is not one of those things I can help, but instead something around which I've had to adapt my life. No, getting my hair cut is like doing the other household chores, like dusting the bookshelves, washing the dishes, or pulling out the weed-whacker for some serious gasoline powered Saturday morning action. The simple fact is that I have bad hair, and it grows fast. The only option is to cut it short and keep it that way. You'd think that this would be an easy task, but oh no...I've generally gotten used to telling people exactly what I want, and then panicking as they mangle what little chance my hair has of looking something short of a 70's horror flick. The simple fact is that stylists/barbers cut hair all day, yet when I walk into most places, they act like they've never seen a good haircut before, and go out of their way to give me a bad one. That was, until I found Grateful Head. The people at Grateful Head don't ask a lot of questions, they just cut my hair. It's always exactly what I ask for, done in 15-20 minutes. They don't cut my sideburns off, they don't leave the sides long so that my new haircut resembles the shape of a mushroom, they don't make it look like I joined the military, and what's more, they never suddenly act like they don't speak English because they screwed something up. Is getting a haircut supposed to be scary? Maybe if you are 5. When you are 22 it's usually a relatively pleasant errand that needs to get done every 4-8 weeks or so. Not so for this place. From the second I walked in to the second I was scooted out the door it was a terrifying ordeal that left me thinking "did that really happen?" I may have PTSD due to the 20 minutes I spent in here. Let me explain. At first, the blonde (maybe redheaded) middle-aged lady was friendly and welcoming. We drank our coffee together, both starting out the day, and I figured I could just sit back and relax, show her my photo from my previous haircut, talk about the weather, and then get on with our lives. So I show her my photo and she takes one glance at it and says, "ok, let's do it." I'm not even really sure she acknowledged its existence because she never once went back to look at it again. Then I tried to have some friendly banter and she kept going off on how she used to own her own place and now she's stuck here. I tried to offer some solace but she wouldn't hear it and preferred to talk about the terrible customers who come in and ask for outrageous things. I try to change the subject to weather, to which she says, "oh yeah, global warming. Thanks a lot Al Gore, asshole." Not only does this statement not make sense, she said it with such a snarl that it sounded as if she had once gone on a date with Al Gore and he never called her back. When she started taking a lot off the back, I tried to say "be careful not to take too much off back there," to which she replied "this is one of those things you tell someone before they do it." I would have walked out right then and there but she was waving those scissors around my head and I wanted to leave with both my eyes. When she thought it was done, not me (and there were plenty of mistakes, mind you), she said, "let me get your coat." "I don't have a coat," I said. This was practically the last straw for her and she gave me the nastiest look I've ever seen from a hairdresser. I payed her, left, and didn't look back. Once I got out of view of the shop, I put on my hat and started to long process of finding a place that could fix my botched mop top. Word to the wise, avoid this place at all costs. Walk on the opposite side of the street when you get near. Send your enemies here. Write to your congressman. This place is HELL. read more

This used to be a 5 star review but I recently found out they had some questionable practices. The thing that really got me is that they have a couple of unlicensed cosmetologists. It seems like the owner will allow a couple of her friends to come in a cut hair under the table. Not only is this illegal but it's unethical. It takes work away from licensed cosmetologists who have gone to school and pay to keep their license up to date. I haven't paid for a haircut in years, so when I walked into Grateful Head, I didn't know what to expect. What I found was a clean shop with a stylist who immediately greeted me and asked me to sign in on the sheet at the front counter. I was directed to a chair right away, as there was no waiting that early in the morning. My stylist asked me how I would like it cut and upon telling her, she grabbed the clippers and went right to work, occasionally making small talk about the holidays. About 20 minutes later, I was looking in the mirror at a much younger and, dare I say, more attractive man with an Errol Flynnesque je ne sais quoi. 4 stars for a good haircut at a decent price and for being nice to me. I live close by and have gotten my haircut here multiple times, usually it was a last minute sort of deal before I had to hop on a plane and head back to base (I used to be in the Marine Corps). Now the haircut that I, or any friends I brought to sf, asked for were always a simple medium or low fade from zero at the bottom. It's one of the easiest haircuts to give. Every time, every single time, they messed up the fade and cut it too high, or they messed up the top of our heads, or bangs and we ended up having to buzz the entire thing. Really annoying. The women hair cutting never offered a discount or anything. But I guess it's my fault for giving them more than one chance. I will never go back and I will strongly urge anyone thinking of going here to reconsider. It's the worst. read more

I love this place. I have been going for a year now because I wasn't satisfied with my old hair cutter; she cut it too short and it looked HORRIBLE. I go to Ann, she's really good and patient. She always listens to what I want and makes sure that my hair is how I like it. I usually wear my hair in a ponytail, so when she was cutting my bangs she told me to tie my hair back like I would normally, to see if I liked the length of the bangs or not. I thought it was a brilliant idea! I'm thinking of telling my brother to go to her too! (He's picky about how he wants his hair cut) Every time I've gotten my hair cut (every couple of months) I come back satisfied...the one time I had someone different, I wasn't pleased. I had Diana, I've seen her cut other people's hair, but I didn't like the way she cut mine. The haircuts are now $16 ($7 to trim bangs)..plus some for tip, of course. I've paid my debit card (which is a visa check card), so they accept visa & mastercard for sure, not sure about discover or anything else though... read more

You get what you pay for here... It is extremely inexpensive, but not worth the aggravation of getting a horrible haircut. I had come in before just for a trim - I have long hair that I ALWAYS wear up because I don't do high maintenance hair - and it was fine. All I really need is the damaged hair cut off, usually a couple of inches and maybe layers... So, I come in and an older woman "takes care" of me. I think I should have been nervous at the fact that she was a little shaky, but I shrugged it off and let her cut my hair. I am not picky, and have only one requirement: just leave my hair long enough to be put into a ponytail. THAT'S IT. She doesn't even wet my hair before she starts chopping away (another sign something was wrong - this was not some fancy dry haircut). When she was done, my hair was so uneven that it could no longer go in a ponytail. I was SO MAD. Anyways, never again, and even if you have low standards, this place does not meet them. (SIDE NOTE: my boyfriend has gotten his haircut here multiple times and has never had a problem - they do a decent male haircut. But if you are a woman BEWARE!) read more

Laura was awesome! Considering I had a TON of hair to cut off (12-15 inches) she finished in about 45 minutes! She stylized my hair based off of a photo, and adjusted it so it would look good on me. This is a very cheap place. You have to ask them to wash your hair and give you a nice blow dry, and it costs extra. But all together the price is still okay. The problem is that you cannot go here if you have anything special in mind. I got Laura and she did not listen to me during our consult and completely ruined my layers. I went in to get my bangs trimmed up and shredded a little, and she took it too far. I've basically got a female mullet now. It's going to take months for my hair to grow back and I do not know what I'm going to do in the mean time. She was also very frigid and impatient. If I could give this place NO STARS I would! I walked in and simply wanted a 2 inch trim on my long hair and shorter layers in the front. I was greeted by a strange looking russian lady with wacky short hair and I should have known then not to proceed, but I did anyway. Let's just say she took a front chunk of my hair (where my layers were) and simply hacked it off, I thought layers were MULTIPLE LAYERS of hair! I never get anything fancy so I typically don't have a bad hair cut but THIS WAS BAD! I didn't even let her finish. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND COMING HERE! Ps. the russian lady was very rude. As I type this I'm sporting the worst haircut I've ever had in my life. The person that cut it... we can just call her "Laura"... clearly has no training in cutting hair or customer service. Aside from being rude and unwelcoming, she made absolutely no effort to give me a good haircut. She was super fast and sloppy with the clippers and shaved the sides and back WAY too high. The top was cut with scissors and not blended or even at all. When I got home I realized that the hair just above my ears hadn't even been cut, so there were a bunch of long hairs over both ears. She also missed a spot on the bottom of my hairline and didn't even shave my neck. (See pic) Completely unacceptable. I'm not a picky guy about these things and I'm really only posting this to save someone from a terrible haircut. read more

I'm not the kind of girl who gets her hair cut every two months. I get my hair cut about once a year, maybe twice if I feel daring. I first came to Grateful Head because they take walk ins, and there were people in the salon...good sign! It was a Saturday, so I waited about fifteen to twenty minutes before I was seen. I was seen by Ann, and she was pretty good! She listened to me when I said I wanted it cut just below my shoulders and wanted bangs. I was half expecting to see not enough cut off, or too much cut off. I loved her, so the next time I went in, I requested her. For some reason that I just don't know...I was overlooked. It wasn't busy but i thought maybe she needed a break. Somebody else finally asked if I was waiting for somebody in particular...and once Ann realized I was waiting for her she took me right away. She felt bad, so when she was shampooing my hair she gave me the most amazing scalp massage! She added extra time, and I think she spent a good 6 minutes just massaging my scalp! She even remembered me from the first time I went, which was probably a good 8 months before. The last time I got my hair cut was almost a year ago, and it's about time that I get another cut. I've moved to Berkeley since then, but I will still make the journey to West Portal and drive around for parking because I feel that not only does Ann cut my hair well, but it makes me feel good because she remembers me even though I rarely come in! read more

I got my haircut there last week. I usually get it cut by a Russian lady and she does a good job, but she was busy and had my cut by an Asian lady instead. I feared my cut wouldn't be as great, but I decided to give it a go anyway. I usually like my haircuts short... short on the sides, super short in the back because I hate it when my hair gets mullet-like, but enough on top so that it still curls. No one ever cuts my hair like that, because the stylists probably know better. She cut my hair and everyone thought it looked great but me at the time. Maybe I'm just super self conscious, I don't know. But usually when I wash my hair the next day and comb it, I'm usually very satisfied with my look. The stylists are generally really nice over there and for a good cut, it's relatively cheap. $20 or so is pretty good for non-metro guys with no sense of fashion like myself. The wait varies... lately, I've been really lucky and get in the chair right away... whereas sometimes I've had to wait 10 or so minutes. I've had one better haircut in my life, but that was like eight years ago when my friend took me to some expensive place downtown that looked super swank and way too classy for me... I don't know why he took me here... but yeah. My best hair cuts in my twenty-something life has been from this place. Then again, I don't go to too many places, but this place is good enough to keep on coming back for next time. And if they can make MY nappy hair look good, then they must be great. read more

I came here a while ago, wanting a trim to my bangs and also some layering to my hair. I was into a more edgy look, with a lot of layers. I walked in, and to my surprise, there was no wait! Good, good! They told me to sign in anyway, so I did, and I was seated. I have the stylist the picture of how I wanted my hair, and she said, "Oh, it's too layered. I don't really like that." And so she proceeded cutting my hair in a way she favored. That kind of irritated me. I told her I didn't mind having super layered hair (after all, on a regular basis, my hair takes three hours to dry. The more layers, the thinner it is, the faster it dries. I am very low maintenance.) She finished, and the end product did not look like the picture. In fact, it didn't look too different aside from the fact that I now have bangs. I paid and tipped, slightly disappointed by the haircut. The only thing I really liked was how she cut my bangs. read more
