Easily has become one of, if not my favorite restaurants here in Scottsdale as a AZ local. The food always tastes fresh and is consistently good. Friendly staff and it's a nice, casual place to grab a meal and a drink. I love introducing people to this place and will continue to come back!

Stopped in for happy hour and honestly, Grassroots did not disappoint. I ordered the Boat Load of Wings (sauce on the side) and the happy hour pork belly, and let me tell you, that pork belly was absolutely phenomenal. Perfectly tender, beautifully caramelized, and packed with flavor. I'd come back for that alone. The pork belly complimented the jalapeno cheddar grits so well, it was like a party on my mouth. The Wings were a fun, shareable bite, crispy, flavorful, and even better when you control the sauce situation. Happy hour portions were generous, and the vibe was relaxed but lively in that "everyone's here to unwind" kind of way. Overall, a great spot for happy hour with standout dishes that make you want to explore more of the menu.

Shrimp po boy

We came by for lunch recently and everything was phenomenal from start to finish. Service was timely and friendly. The ambiance was also cozy with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. After looking over the menu, we ordered the pork belly to start off with. The pork itself was sweet and very tender. For our main entrees, we ordered the shrimp po boy and the southern shrimp and grits. The shrimp po boy was probably the best one I've had in a long while. The shrimp was lightly battered and seasoned well. The southern shrimp and grits was flavorful with a good amount of spice to it. It was a bigger portion than we had anticipated, and we had plenty leftover to take home. The person that I had gone with had never tried grits before and wasn't sure if they would like it but ended up liking it more than they thought they would. Close parking can be difficult to find depending on the time of day but there are plenty of lots nearby if you don't mind walking.

Blackened ahi tuna salad

This place has one of my favorite salads in the valley! Their blackened ahi tuna salad is pricey ($30) but worth it. If you're like me and not a fan of wasabi, note that the wasabi peas in the salad aren't very wasabi-forward and you can always ask for them on the side or ask for the salad without them altogether. Service here is typically quick and friendly. Also, if you're in the mood for a tasty dessert, the chocolate toffee brownie is a must! If you come for Social Hour (their version of happy hour), I highly recommend the salmon lettuce wraps and common ground burrata. The inside of the restaurant is dimly lit, and they have comfy booths.

Sea Smoke and Orzo salad

Grassroots is among our very favorites (all Collins family restaurants are!). Friday's special is my go-to: the Omega Burger. It's in-house dry smoked salmon chunks with arugula and their homemade aioli, on a fresh Noble Bread roll. Paired with their bacon and blue cheese dressed salad. I might regret sharing it as this is always in limited supply, but too great not to... My wife's favorite is the Sea Smoke (similar smoked salmon chunks) salad with Orzo, cuke's, candied pecans, pickled red onion, air dried corn (underrated) and heirloom tomatoes, topped with green goddess dressing. It's always also perfect. The service and attention to quality and detail Grassroots always provides will make anyone a loyal repeat customer. The experience and how good we feel after each lunch date is among why we so enjoy it here.

Half off bottles of wine for July! Best part...... what you don't finish they cork up for you to take home. We got our usual pork belly grits. And shrimp po boy but we asked for grilled shrimp. Delish. For our side tonight was an spaghetti squash that was incredible I was not that impressed with the key lime pie though like everyone else in the reviews

Brownie sundae

Reservation for Mother's Day brunch with college boy, we met at Grassroots and snagged parking nearby. There is a garage somewhere but surface parking closer to the door. Two spaces up front for curbside pickup, nice. Our table was ready, so I sat first while waiting for son. The four top where I was seated was tightly packed near other tables and had hard solid wood seats. Against my better judgement I did not return to the car for my travel seat cushion, but I should have! My ability to linger long over a meal was definitely impacted by these uncomfortable chairs. I made sure there was a coke waiting for my son when he arrived to peruse the menu. After several strongly considered options, he chose the ribs with fries and slaw. He ordered the beautiful crusty artisan bread and devoured it all, while I enjoyed the rainbow beet side dish as my appetizer. The entrees filled the entire table! I was thrilled with my plate of tender hoisin coated short rib and a fabulous jalapeno cheddar grits with some wilted greens. Ate every last bite. Son's large order of baby back ribs with slaw, plus a second plate with a massive pile of shoestring fries took up the rest of our four top table. He said the ribs were falling off the bone and very tasty. The slaw was ok, he apparently ordered it for me so I picked at it. We were both stuffed, but son found room for a brownie sundae! It was a quick meal, service was efficient and not chatty, but that's ok, because I needed to stand at the end, the hard chairs did me in!

Was in the Scottsdale area again and had to take advantage of the opportunity to come back for more goodness from Grassroots Kitchen & Tap again. As before it was amazingly delicious and the service was top notch! Although I didn't have a reservation they were able to squeeze me in at the bar for a nice little happy hour treat! There were no open tables because they were all booked up so I was very fortunate to score a spot. Kennedy took great care of me and made an excellent suggestion for me to grab a wonderfully tasty and perfectly sized light bite! I had a delicious spicy tuna appetizer which had a nice amount of rice and a tiny bit of heat. I was debating over the spicy tuna and the salmon lettuce wraps so Kennedy's suggestion was greatly appreciated. The couple next to me had the salmon and they were raving about them so I already know what I want to try next time! The restaurant is nice and clean and the servers are all very welcoming and so pleasant! Everyone is very professional and so courteous! Parking at the time I was there was a little more crowded. I parked in the parking garage area where there were plenty of spaces. It was not a long walk so it's still very convenient. I can't wait to have another opportunity to be in the area so I can try all the things! I'd highly recommend trying them out to anyone wondering whether to go or not and would still recommend making reservations ahead of time!

Southern Shrimp & Grits.

Our friends were in town and we were looking for a kid-friendly option for dinner in/around Scottsdale. We picked Grassroots Kitchen & Tap for our Saturday night dinner, around 5pm. It wasn't super busy when we arrived; we were seated right away on their outdoor patio, which was perfect for us. They do have heaters in that area as well, if you're worried about getting cold but if you plan ahead, they take reservations on their website. For our meals, we had selected the Southern Shrimp & Grits, Roots BBQ Brisket (subbed slaw, no baked beans), Waldorf Chicken Salad, and the Nordic Salmon / Salad combo. The kids got the chicken tenders meal. Overall, everyone enjoyed their food. I had gotten the shrimp & grits which was a good portion, I was able to eat most of it. The grits were clearly the star, very creamy and tasty with a little bite from the jalapeños. The kids meals were a good size as well, they came with fries & grapes and the treat was a coupon for a kids sized ice cream scoop next door. Service was efficient, our server came by periodically to check in on us and everything was brought out timely. This seems like a good spot for lunch but also had the casual date night restaurant vibe. We enjoyed it and would come back in the future!

Topher's Braised Short Ribs
Mark C.

I would say that Grassroots seems to be that happy in-between of a normal sit down restaurant and a fine dining restaurant. There's no dress code and the servers aren't in decked out super formal attire, but some of their food items are priced at fine dining prices. My crony and I had the pleasure of trying out the braised pork belly, braised short ribs, and the chocolate toffee brownie. The portion sizes were small, but it's made up by the very high quality of food. The short ribs and pork belly were so tender and juicy. The jalepeno cheddar grits were deliciously scrumptious. The brownie came with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream; it was decadently sweet. The service was attentive and accommodating. The whole atmosphere was bright, clean, and amiable.

Grass roots $30 ahi tuna salad.

This is my $30 ahi tuna salad. Other than moving the 2 sauce containers, this is untouched. Are you kidding me!!?

Burrata
Taylor W.

Stopped in for a weeknight happy hour with a couple girlfriends. They were doing half off bottles of wine in the month of July so we enjoyed a couple bottles of rose with our meal. We shared the burrata and it was amazing with the pepper jam and toast. All of our meals were the perfect portions sizes and full of flavor. Such a gem!

The hostess was very friendly and led us back to the community table near the bar. Our server/bartender was busy at the bar and taking orders. No smile, a no- nonsense personality which is fine, just not friendly at all. My husband and friend decided to do beer flights. They enjoyed except for one of the beers they said had no flavor. I opted for a Tito's dirty martini which is my favorite drink. They enjoyed the beer flights but unfortunately when my martini was delivered, I swore the glass hadn't been properly washed as it had a sweet, coffee taste. I let our server know and she immediately took it and said she would make another which was great. I did see her grab a new glass. Unfortunately the new martini tasted exactly the same. Almost like a terrible espresso martini with olive juice. It was not drinkable. Either she didn't know how to make a dirty martini or the olive juice or vermouth went bad. I couldn't stomach the drink and felt nauseous so left it. We ordered a Chef's Board. Cheese selections, plus pepperoni, salami, prosciutto, mixed nuts & fruits, olives and fig jam. They missed the nuts, fruit and olives. The meat and cheese were good but it was a basic board. We should have ordered the pizza instead as everyone around us had a pizza and it smelled delicious. Our first visit was not the best experience, however, we may give it another try and check out the pizza instead.

The food is so good, I've never heard complaints about it. I'd recommend the following four, but don't limit yourself to them. Chipotle Ranch Chicken Sandwich, Bomb Tacos, Grilled Chicken Pita. The coffee is excellent too. They are very accommodating, and during the half-time crunch, the service can be a little slow. They are, however, very accommodating. Backyards can cater. Maybe they're paid, I'm not sure, but based on my experience I would not go back. The biggest issue was the service. We arrived and were told to sit anywhere we wanted. After sitting down, we waited about 20 minutes and no one ever came to our table. No greeting, no water, nothing. Eventually I had to walk up to the bar and ask what the procedure was. Do we order at the bar? Do you have table service? No one could give a clear answer. They just kept saying, "If you want, you can order here." That's not the point. If I sit down at a restaurant, I expect someone to come to the table and explain how things work or take our order. If the system is that you order at the bar, just say that clearly so people know what to do. The drinks were also very mediocre. Nothing special at all. Honestly, they tasted like something you could throw together at home with soda, alcohol, and ice. The surprising part is that the food was actually phenomenal. The kitchen clearly knows what it's doing. The dishes were delicious and probably the best part of the entire experience. But great food alone isn't enough to make me return somewhere with poor service and forgettable drinks. My recommendation is don't waste your time on a Sunday brunch. There are plenty of other brunch spots with good food and good service.
