I almost didn't stop here. I'm so glad I did. This small shop has some beautiful stuff for children from infant to probably age 5-7 or so. That's as far as clothing, anyway; they also sell a lot of toys, some art supplies, that sort of thing for children. I didn't look at every piece of clothing here but what I purchased was all from brands I haven't heard of before, and really lovely stuff, so in addition to adding the shop on Instagram I'll have to check out the brands too. The woman helping me was very friendly, happy to help but to give me space. I bought a top for my babe and when I was looking at it she mentioned she had a navy colorway, which wasn't out on the floor but she went to get it for me to take a look at and I MUCH preferred it to the green one I had seen and was considering. I can't wait to see her in it! It's not a cheap shop, particularly if you're looking for clothing. But they had a sale going on when I was here and the two racks were packed with stuff. And the toys are generally not as high priced as the clothing if you're looking for a gift or something. If you're on a tour of children's stores in Portland, add this one to your list. read more

This is the best kids shop- they have such a great selection of items, from clothing to books and toys, and something for every age. The level of quality is definitely present in everything they carry and their selection is much more curated and special, with still so much to choose from for all different budgets. The clothing options are so great and I could have spent all day looking at the different books they had. The two women working tonight were equally wonderful in helping me pick out a few gift items, and I would most definitely recommend this shop to anyone shopping for kids items. Oh boy they have the sweetest toys! I wanted to buy everything! I have a 3 month old so I'll be back often. I managed to leave with only 4 small toys, but still spent almost $70. So it's pricey but the products are mostly local, handcrafted, or natural materials. You get what you pay for. read more

This place is cute. Have a nice selection of toys and clothing. It's your typical cute little independent Portland toy shop. Nothing super special about it. I do love that it's woman-owned. But really...they need to up their babyproofing game. I witnessed a young toddler fall and bang her temple against the corner of one of their shelves. The toddler was not running around like an unruly child. The toddler had a whole family of grandparents and parents (and I think an uncle) who were actually paying attention to her. I happened to be close to her as well but unfortunately wasn't close enough to grab her when she fell and banged her face (maybe it was her head...temple to be exact?) on the corner of one of their bottom shelves. The child was simply walking with one of those pull toys and tripped. The little one was wailing in distress, tears galore... and the family looked frightened. Even I was frightened I didn't even know the kid. The person at the counter while the child was wailing in pain asked, "Is she okay?" Come on now...the child was WAILING. Clearly not okay. That was a hard, very unpleasant fall that could've taken her eye out had she had worse luck. The mother asked if they had ice and the answer was a quick, "No we don't." I don't know. It just seemed kind of harsh. There was no apology. Maybe an apology would be admitting fault. Liability? Dunno. But if they're worried about liability, they should probably babyproof their bottom shelves at least. Or modify the shelves so that the corners aren't so sharp. Hope they make this change and actually address this issue. Let's see if they choose safety over style. Babyproofing isn't pretty...but injuries aren't pretty either. read more

I have a son that was born locally and whenever his grandmother comes to visit from out of town she always comes into the store wanting to buy him something. We always walk out disappointed. We always love the idea of supporting local businesses but this one seems to exclude itself from the common people by only having exclusive toys and over priced items. Which is fine for those who do not want to go to the big toy stores and want something different. Most times we have been in, the staff always seem to be chatting to themselves and not giving the customers much attention. My view is toys stores should be fun and you should come out with something every time you go in. The upside is that you can go to petit Provence next-door for a pastry before or after. read more

What a sweet store, I just wish I could come back here more often. My husband and I were in Portland visiting our youngest daughter who attends grad school in the city. We loved this whole street and were lucky enough to stumble upon this darling store. We have a granddaughter who is the apple of our eye and the woman who worked here really helped us with that goal, ha! We bought her soft, comfy and cute clothes which she loves wearing. I have previously confessed to be a head over heels in love with my granddaughter, Grandpa. I have manifested this love in many ways one of which is to buy her clothes. Cute clothes. Lots of cute clothes. Enter Grasshopper. My wife and I went to visit our Portland grad school attending daughter. We got to see her, try new restaurants, see great nature and on the last day, buy baby clothes. We wandered back over to Alberta for one more quilt store and find a cafe for breakfast. Next to said cafe was a toy and clothing store which was closed. However, when we were done with breakfast, it was open. Victory. The woman who worked here was very personable and helped us find the sizes we wanted and a shirt which had the word Grasshopper on it and the location, thus giving us a souvenir with Portland on it. This crazy Grandpa can't wait to give his little darling two darling and unique outfits from Portland. Not sure if this keeps Portland wierd but it does keep her well dressed. read more

Grasshopper is an adorable shop that I will surely be returning to. I had stopped in last week to get some ideas for gifts for my daughter's upcoming first birthday, and I came away with a few great things. Now, I consider myself to be kind of a freak as far as children's clothes, toys, gear, etc. This is due to the significant amount of on line "research" I tend to do regarding such items. Grasshopper had many wonderful things that I had not seen before, however, and I was very happy to make some new discoveries. This shop contains a very thoughtful selection of toys, books, clothing and a small amount of "gear" as related to babies and small children. Most of the toys were of the more eco-friendly, nontoxic variety. I picked up several nontoxic tub toys for my daughter and eyed quite a few other things as I plan for her birthday presents from hubs and I for later this month. The ladies who wok here do a wonderful job. They are super helpful and friendly. As a bonus, gift-wrapping is complimentary no matter what you buy....and very cute! read more

i love shopping in Grasshopper for the truly interesting selection of cool kiddo products. I have to be honest and say that I have had far from friendly service the handful of times that I've been in, and that alone has made it less than the draw it should be to get me to drive across town to shop there. We love to visit this store. The kiddos are able to amuse themselves with the display toys and book area for a few minutes without seeming to disturb much. They have mainly Plan Toys and similar stuff.. also an area near the counter of cheaper, littler toys. This is a great resource for gifts - you can easily spend $10 or less on a few funky items like mini slinkies or tiny cars. Perfect if you're into favors for your b-day parties. The local clothing lines in there are awesome - especially for boys. We adore the little baggie boys' pants with a simple elastic waist. Sturdy, durable, and with patch pockets on the bum, adorable! Likewise with the dresses - I think the brand is called KaraLine. Great shoes, rainboots.. and the toy and book selection is pretty good. I actually love the book section - just the right amount of hardcover, softcover, oldies and newbies. On the downside, the stuff is not cheap here. There are few sales; they do have a basket you can burrow through but it's not inviting and sort of makes you feel like a jerk being down on the floor instead of admiring all the expensive frocks and coats. read more

You're better off going to a store where the customer service isn't tainted by some awkward superiority. Yes! Finally! A children's store full of diversity and sweetness! I have to admit, it was an acquired taste. I was a bit thrown by the prices at first. But once I explored the other options for children's apparel and toys in Portland, I realized that this place knocks them all out of the water! Since then, we've been a bit addicted to Grasshopper. I have never been disappointed with any of the adorable dresses, shoes or toys that we've invested in. The customer service is far superior when the owner is there (sorry, girls). I really want to support local businesses and not give money to chains or Amazon, and this place is cute, with a small but varied and unique selection of clothes/books/toys up through age 7 or so. I was very happy to give them my money. However, turns out the (out of state) gift recipient was going to be JUST too big for the clothes. They didn't carry anything else to fit him. And when I tried to return the item I was told they have a 7 DAY RETURN POLICY, STORE CREDIT ONLY. They were very nice folks (during both ends of the transaction) but I have no use for store credit. Maybe again someday? But not now. This is a weirdly restrictive policy (thank god I made the 7 day window!) that turned me from a "thanks for the refund, I will absolutely give you money again someday and will tell my friends to shop here" person to a "why risk shopping there ever again" person. I went there hoping to find a specific toy but ready to get something else. I had a friend's 2 year old b-day party looming. The sales person asked me what I was looking for (Dado cubes/squares) did not have them or anything else by that company so I said well I need something for a 2 yo girl that is made in america I"m flexible about the nature of the toy.The sales person gave me a look like"Oh you are one of THOSE people " and asked"why dou you want made in USA?" HUH? seriously? now I know there are some quality made products from Europe that are cool but WTHeck? She was all huffy. The other woman came over and was all we have some fair trade products fromblah blah blah damage done.. full disclosure it turns out they did have some blocks made in USA. The staff always gives me their honest opinion about the toys and I do think they have a right to brag about locally made clothes for kids-that is special! The owner even gave my son a free tshirt the last time we were there. Believe me, their business is booming-they don't need to offer you a fake smile "in hopes you will buy something". Did you notice their huge remodel? Not a sign of a failing business. They have an excellent selection of European toys, cools shoes, and your kids can play while you shop. I took my two year old grandson to Grasshopper, with the intent to buy him a few things. I left without buying anything. The store staff was VERY unfriendly, didn't want him touching any of the toys, acted like children were unwelcome in her store. It's a toy store. Kids are going to want to pick up the toys. Grasshopper is just a couple blocks from our house. With a 6-month old who got loads of hand-me-downs, we don't have tons of reason to go in, but we love to anyway. The ladies working there are always so happy, friendly and helpful. While it's not always the cheapest, I do love supporting them.
