I really appreciate the educated, patient and helpful staff. I don't love yard work and they have been working with me to have as much of a maintenance free yard as can be expected with a grass yard. We've have been under renovation and finally in November we could consider growing grass. With the Grass Pad's guidance we planted Macho Mix Fescue grass in November. We also followed the dormant seeding program to take advantage of all our snowfall and can see some fruits of that effort. We have been trusting this place for lawn help for 15 years. This location is not the easiest to get in and out of, but the staff here is the best. They always have enough staff that approach you immediately so you do not have to wait. They are all knowledgable of many issues that we could not resolve. The "Idiot Proof Plan" is the way to go every year. Make sure you become a rewards member, then a few weekends a year they offer double points. Buy your 5 or 8 step plan at that time to accrue $5-10 off for the next time. Their Heat Wave grass seed is superior as well...5 years and counting on our yard and easy to manage now. read more

I like their grass seeds, which are designed to work well in our area. I attended a helpful lawn care clinic at the Stilwell location, and purchased my products here. The employee at the grass desk was grumpy and impatient (even though there were no other customers at the time). It was quite a letdown from the great employees at the Stilwell location. My products were available, the price was reasonable, and I just showed my receipt at the docks to have my products loaded. Pretty good. read more

I use to have TruGreen service my lawn for 4 years, up until a little over a year ago when a local aerating company recommended Grass Pad and their products. I used TruGreen to take care of my lawn as my lawn knowledge was non existing, however they were horrible at providing feedback or explaining any issues I had going on. Understand they have a bunch of customers to hit everyday and I was just another one on the list they rushed through and moved onto the next. The aerating company suggested Grass Pads Idiot Proof lawn programs, which made life easy for me breaking down exactly what I needed and when to apply. I have learned more from Grass Pad about my lawn and how to take care of it in less than a year, then I did from TrueGreen in 4 years, plus it is saving me money. Every time I go in I get approached by numerous employees offering help, all of which seem to have a ton of knowledge. Customer service has been great! Fair pricing on Milorganite and seed, but I am otherwise unimpressed with the store. I am well above average in knowledge about lawn care. So far, when I have come in to buy products, such as lime or fall weed and feed winterizers, I have been less than thrilled with how employees have automatically assumed that I don't have a clue about lawn care. I am assuming it is because I am a woman. When I asked about lime related to cost and how many bags would be needed for about 8000 square feet, because I couldn't find it in the store, I was lectured by an employee to complete a soil test before applying the lime, because apparently he assumed I was going to destroy the pH balance of my yard. I've been treating our lawn annually with lime for well over 12 years now, and I am familiar with soil testing due to Joco's extension office offering it for free each year to residents. This employee also knew nothing about our yard (e.g. number of trees). He just assumed I didn't have a clue. I was finally told I would need about 10 bags weighing 40 lbs each of lime to treat the yard at about $5 each. A 30 lb bag at Lowes of fast-acting lime costs $16 and only 2 are needed for the coverage. Why would I purchase 400 lbs of lime from Grass Pad and pay about $50 with tax when I can buy 60 lbs from Lowes for about $35 with tax? When I called to inquire about the fertilizer/weed control products they have in stock for fall, I was lectured that weed control doesn't work in the fall which is totally inaccurate. The best time to treat for broadleaf weeds is the fall when they are still growing. Fall lasts through about mid-December, and current-day temperatures in the next week are in the 60s and 70s. There are also products on the market that can be used through the winter, such as Scotts. But I am assuming I was told this because they don't carry a combo weed and feed fertilizer. . . I was astounded that their fungus control for yards is more than twice what Bayer granules cost. I checked out their pricing as a just in case. . . And, they don't take Amex. read more

Around 2:00PM, I called the Grass Pad, located in Olathe, by mistake. The person, a lady, who answered the phone told me that I had called the wrong number and asked me what I was looking for. I told her Zoysia and she said let me call you back after I call the Bonner Springs store and check to see if they have any. Approximately 5 minutes later, the Lady in Olathe, called me back and told me they had what I wanted. So I continued on my travel and was taken care of at the Bonner Springs location. Visited the Olathe store and once again had an issue. Told I could not park in pick up while going in to pay for 2 bags of Prevent to finish a job. I understand if it was busy and you want to keep people moving through, but when you have one car and 4 spots are open and I back up directly in front of the Prevent pallet, well, let's use common sense. I will take my $40k of business elsewhere, all over 2 bags of Prevent and a loading area that had 4 open spots and I might have been 2 minutes. Never a problem at Shawnee, but always a problem at Olathe. My business will go elsewhere... Mr. Bain would be embarrassed by this as customer service was his thing... read more

Their "shade" grass seed grew where others told us we'd never get grass to grow. We are somewhat do-it-ourselvers...or maybe we are just cheap...so we decided to try seeding in some areas dirt was put down, before considering sod. I'm fairly pleased with the results after just one season. We've got a few splotchy areas where the ground is very clay-like where the seed didn't take, but it might have washed away. read more

Superior product and knowledge of lawn care. I wouldn't go anywhere else for lawn care. When I first moved the the city my lawn was in dire need of help. I tried the Scott's product that you can get in any discount or hardware store for several years and got mediocre to lackluster results. Then a few years back I started with the Grass Pad's "Idiot Proof Lawn System" using their Loveland products they carry and the results were night and day. I've also used their recommendations on product to over seed areas of my lawn and achieved great results. It's well worth the little bit of extra money to get the service and product this great business offers. They carry a full line of lawn care products. Gardening tools, seeds, soil, etc. Also a full nursery for your planting and landscaping needs. read more

I definitely enjoy the Grass Pad. It's not the biggest place by any means, but it certainly is not small. They have so many types of flowers here that, if you cannot find something for your garden, you are just too darn picky. The same thing goes with their big plot of plants of various types and shapes and sizes. They have an OK selection of pots too, though I wish they had some cheaper plastic ones that you could just pick up, as it seems they focus on the more expensive glazed ceramic ones. The people are quite friendly, and seem to know their stuff. They could be a bit more proactive at coming up to you and asking if you're finding everything or need assistance or opinions, but you really have to seek them out. I wish they had a better vegetable selection. They seem to focus on flowers and plants, which is great and all, but I like to grow things that I can actually get something out of - cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, herbs. The herb selection is fine, but the veggie selection leaves a bit to be desired. Parking can be a real tricky proposition on the weekends or at the beginning of the planting season, so get there early and everything will go quicker. Overall, 3.75 stars rounded up to 4. It's a solid place but not without a few shortcomings. read more

I used to be a HD junkie, cause I thought I'd save money... but when I had a very large landscaping project in a house I was renovating, I realized I saved more working with locals who advised me to get it right the first time! Complete new sod job in front, grass seed in the shaded back yard and all new shrubs/flowers in plant beds. My neighbor tells me I have the best looking lawn on the street and I literally mow it every other week. It's like carpet for your lawn! I love Grass Pad's people, advice and products! The Grass Pad has just about everything you need to take care of your lawn and garden and at decent prices. We've noticed that their nursery stock is about half of the price of our local Ace hardware store. We are looking to do some landscaping around our home and put in a vegetable garden so we will be here a lot in the next couple months. So far every visit here has been pleasant and a fun experience. Great local nursery with knowledgeable staff. They always have helpful hints and tips to keep your plants looking good! They do have some bags of mulch and topsoil but if you are looking to do a large area they do not do bulk or truck load deliveries. Highly recommend them if you are looking for plants, lawn care items, bulbs, trees or just to pick a plant expert's brain! read more

What was I expecting? This is kansas, land of hybrid everything and organic nothing. Too many north face jackets and sperry's for me. I can get the same items at the hardware store for less $$$. Lose the plastic pots on the vegetables, gardeners are supposed to be stewards of the land, not polluters of it. read more

Awesome staff!!! From the moment we arrived we knew we were in the right place! A "kid" by the name of john helped us in the tree/ bush section. This guy couldn't have been more helpful! He listened to our wants and needs, was very patient with us, gave us several options without ever being pushy. Very knowledgeable, very personable, and super friendly. On to the inside, Todd helped us with our grass needs...again, super friendly and knew his stuff! I went to Grass Pad store in Olathe, KS to get some products for broadleaf weeds coming up on my lawn in May, a staff member recommended Preventer. He told me that this product has slow release fertilizer that would never burn your grass, so just spread it evenly. I listened to him and bought one. A few days later I applied it onto my lawn as instructed. However the next day I found numerous stripe lines of yellow dead grass all over my yard!!! They are up to 1 foot wide and 5 feet long. The ugliest grass burns in any lawn I even seen. Two weeks from then I still see the damages and most of them got even more spread into the areas around. This product has significantly ruined my yard and made it look so ugly. :-((( I called them and explained the issue, then they said there must be some underlying problems with my lawn. What possible underlying problems would appear exactly a day after in the same areas I applied this damn product in a stipe pattern laterally and vertically along the path I went on with the spreader??? What possibly did I do wrong??? The guy on the phone had no idea and rudely said that there is nothing they can do. No remedy was offered. Shouldn't they be responsible and accountable for their products and issues with them??? Horrible experience with both their customer service and product. I would never trust them nor their products. Be Aware of this incidence with Preventer!!! read more

We bought a premium house in a premium neighborhood with an absolute disaster of a lawn. We rented a power rake to more or less tear the whole lawn down to nothing last fall and following the precise advice of the Grass Pad staff from type of seed based on my lawn, fertilizer, and watering cycles from the initial seeding and revised watering cycles on into establishing roots once the seed took, I went from absolute worst lawn in the subdivision to one of the better lawns. I actually think it looks better than some of the neighbors who pay lawn service companies to do everything for them. We have kept up with feeding the lawn and watering as they prescribe and we expect by next year we'll have one of the top 10 lawns in the subdivision. My neighbor who built his home here 25 years ago has said he's never seen our lawn look this good so needless to say I'm pretty excited to see how we can wow everyone as we head into year two of our mission to make this house one of the most desirable in the area. read more
