Avoid Grappling Zone at all costs.
I worked here as an instructor, and leaving was one of the best decisions I've made. The owners, James and Theresa Wadley, are unprofessional, unethical, and completely unfit to run a martial arts school.
James constantly talked down to staff, made inappropriate remarks, and couldn't handle any constructive feedback. At one point, he even challenged me to spar--clearly out of anger and insecurity--despite being in no shape to do so and knowing I'm an active competitor. I have the texts to prove it.
Theresa handles the business side and is the reason behind many of the gym's issues. She consistently mismanaged payroll and finances. The gym is also filthy and poorly maintained. I personally had to buy my own cleaning supplies, pest control products, and other basics just to keep the facility presentable--things ownership should've handled long before.
They left the front desk unattended for months, forcing instructors to stop class and help walk-ins. Then they tried to blame instructors for low enrollment and retention. They only hired a marketing team two weeks before firing me--too little, too late.
After letting me go, they fabricated a fake termination letter with false accusations, claiming I was "disrespectful and aggressive." There is zero proof of this because it never happened. The real reason? They couldn't handle being told the truth about their own failures.
To top it all off, they are still illegally withholding my final paycheck--claiming it's because students quit when they found out I was leaving. But the truth is: they made that decision, not me.
Bottom line: this place is a mess. The leadership is toxic, the gym is dirty, and the people running it are dishonest. Whether you're thinking about training here or working here--don't. read more
