I stayed at Grants last night for the first time, partly because an old friend formerly at the Chevin Country Park, Otley (my regular haunt, see review) has recently become the Restaurant Manager at Grants. Normally I use nearby Studley Hotel in Harrogate.
Grants is part of a small group of hotels and is situated in Swan Rd, close to the centre and handy for shops, Royal Baths, Valley Gardens etc. It only has a small car park, and much of the on-road parking uses a disc parking scheme from 9 - 6 , but there are nearby roads out of this zone.
Check in was polite and efficient, and was allocated a good size room on the front of the hotel, clean, well appointed, and with a very wide bed (three pillows wide) - alas no one to share it with ! Went down to the bar 7.15, ordered a pint of Tetleys, which took a good few minutes to arrive. Menu was presented. I had booked as DB&B (£94 the night) so the Table d'Hotel menu (a la carte also available) consisted of 3 starters, mains, and desserts ( a reasonable £19.95 for non inclusive diners). Easy to choose, but barman was ages coming to take my order, and it was also quite a while before I was called through to the Restaurant. I started with fanned Galia melon with a blackcurrant sorbet (simple but well presented and executed), but there then followed Rump of Lamb, served on a bed of mash with mixed beans. I hadnt actually been asked how I like my lamb (some chefs tend to serve it rather pink, but I prefer the medium/well done side), However it came just as I hoped and was delicious. A request for some mint source was dealt with promptly. The contrasting textures of the different types of beans was a master stroke. Even better was to come , a poached pear served with Yorkshire blue cheese and chopped walnuts .
A really good meal at the price, though service was a bit slow. However I am always aware that eating alone, time does seem to pass slowly, so one has to make allowances.
A cooked breakfast (from 7.30, I prefer breakfast at 7) was served directly from the kitchen (none of those usually unsuccesful attempts to do hot buffet and keep everything hot), and even the butter was in proper pots , unlike so many hotels who serve butter properly at dinner, but give it to you in silly 'parcels' at breakfast time (ensuring you get it on your fingers) . Excellent coffee, as good as I have had in a hotel. Four stars, but not quite five. read more
