Joel was super friendly and extremely knowledgeable about every little aspect of my guitar (and guitars in general) turns out he was a former fender employee so you already know you're getting top notch work done. Took my stray in to get my pick guard replaced with a loaded one as well as my guitar set up for playing. Joel nailed the action and it feels great! He cleaned up the neck and adjusted my tremolo bridge as well as the saddles and now I truly understand why guitar setups are so important. I spent hours playing it when I got home because it just felt so great (and sounded even better) The job took 4 days and he actually finished it a day earlier than he had told me which is a plus. I haven't seen Joel for a few years, but came across him here on Yelp and I felt compelled to add my thoughts on the extensive work Joel has done for me over the years. 1. Expertly re-fretted my 78 Les Pau Goldtop and dumped the action to a ridiculously low level. 2. Routed and replaced the P90 pickups for much hotter ones in the same Les Paul, very clean work 3. Made a custom mahogany strat with a Birdseye Maple neck and black binding. The action again just dumped. So you can have a typical repair shop work on your guitar, or you could take it to a expert luthier like Joel because you want it done right the first time. read more

I brought-in my new seven-string (Ibanez RG 927) for a set-up, fret trim (they were sticking out on one side), neck alignment, and pick-up swap. Joel refinished the neck on my telecaster and did an incredible job on it. Additionally, when I ordered a Custom Shop Strat, and immediately upon delivery had a small issue with how the neck was set - he was able to walk me through a super easy fix over the phone to get it set correctly. This guy is legit. He's about a 2 hour round trip for me, but if I am in the need for top notch work done on a guitar that is important, I'm not sure I would trust anyone else. read more

i've discovered that i hate writing reviews, but i had such a positive experience here that i feel compelled to write. a friend and i were installing new pickups into my les paul. we un-soldered the old pickups from the hardware and re-soldered in the new ones. plugged in, pickups were dead. mass chaos ensued. local guitar shop didn't want to work on it because they felt it was going to be a pain in the ass. referred me here. it's located on the second floor of sound matrix studios. came in, explained my situation and the tech went to work. said everything was soldered properly, but pickups were dead. asked me where i bought, i said ebay. said he sees people coming in frequently with dead pickups bought on ebay. very knowledgeable tech with obvious years of experience. turns out we forgot to solder a couple wires. couldn't tell from the old pickups that they were, since they were wrapped in electrical tape. felt like a dumbass, but relieved that the pickups were fine and that we were idiots. price was very fair, was able to do the job on the spot. would come here again for other repair needs. read more

My 2008 Guild F50R's pickguard did not have good glue on the bottom of it and as a result the guard began to move and shift not to mention it left a gummy residue in its trail. I called Fender and they referred me to Grant Guitars. My dilemma - Guild had changed the pickguard shape and they did not have a replacement. Joel was able to remove my guard clean it up and use a better glue to mount it back on to the guitar. He saved my original guard and it looks amazing! Joel's dedication to detail and excellence makes him the one I trust to work on my guitars. I had him put a neck on a Fender Custom Shop 57 Stratocaster for me and he set it up. He set it up exactly as I wanted and as a result it is my favorite guitar to play! He has a great personality, easy going and great to work with. Highly recommend Joel! read more

I discovered Grant Guitars while I was rehearsing at the down stairs studio Sound Matrix. Turns out that Grant is the last name of Joel Grant a master Custom Guitar builder from La Habra. I was so impressed with his repair and maintenance work I sought out to investigate his Custom guitars. Turns out that they are highly sought after because of the unsurpassed craftsmanship and quality. After many hours of searching I have no luck finding any for sale. After a few years of searching still no luck finding not even one for sale. Recently I brought one of my Electric guitars to have Mr. Grant do one of his setups and custom Bone Nuts installed I noticed 4 Grant guitars in his shop. I asked about them if they were for sale. None of them were for sale accepts for one that just came in on a consignment sale. I jump on it! I was very lucky with my timing because it's very rare that one of these goes up for sale. It was the 1986 #55 Custom V/Star red with original black Floyd Rose trem and Custom Duncan pickups. It was true the quality is incredible! A 25 year old guitar played like brand new! Simply the best (price, quality, experience, friendliness, etc.) There is something comforting about bringing your guitar to a guy who has built high-end guitars from scratch (literally from raw lumber.) Although he rarely builds new Grant models these days, I was lucky enough to own two of them, and I'd put them up against any brand at any price. After reading about people hunting for Joel's guitars and not being able to find one, I admit I came into one rather easily. He built a solidbody (Koa, I believe) bass with the (Danelectro) longhorn body that ended up in a fantastic bass collection in Atlanta. The collector was having a huge sale due to pending medical costs, and that's when I bought it, sight unseen. I had a friend go demo it for me, and he stepped outside long enough to whisper into the phone, "this is the best feeling and playing bass I have ever encountered. If you're not buying it, I am." I bought it, and feel the same way. I own or have owned Fender, Gretsch, Harmony, Danelectro/Silvertone, Yamaha, Ampeg and Gibson models, and the Grant has outperformed them all. read more
