In the 1st place, Granny White was NOT a BARMAID!!! I am her 5th Great Grandson and, Geneaologist, and Historian, I know thiese things and many others that i am going to tell about as family facts, so please save the assumptions and conjecture for someone else. She was Lucinda Wilson White alias "Granny" ( yes, kin to the 10 Wilson Brothers that came to Tn) a true Pioneer and kind to all ,and she crossed the mountains with 2 grandchildren, (we think) an Ox & Cart, and a Man Servant it took her 2 years to get to the Cumberland Settlements, she took pine tar and processed it into grease for passing wagon axles , made "Hoe-Cakes" off the back of her Hoe for strangers, processed Apples from an Orchard to make "Apple-Jack" f, and Apple Pies for passers-by all to earn enough money to pay the taxes on the Grant awarded her and her dead husband Zacharia (killed at the battle of the Bluffs,1780) for his service during the revolution and settlement efforts, but didn't have enough and family here in the settlements did'nt either so she lost her 640 acres, but bought 50 acres off old Franklin pk (Granny White) where she erected an Inn and was famous for her hospitality, cooking and Apple-Jack., people were not known to be running around drunk from her establishment either, they could stay the nite. She had many very famous people stay there and visit her, and was considered to be a prominat citizen and notable personality...not a Barmaid! By the way she was over 60 yrs old when she came here in 1803 some 23 yrs later than she had anticipated due to the death of her husband, with no income from him she hung on until destitue, came to Tn, where her children and grandchildren were..she was a small woman and wore the size dress of a 10 yr old girl. She lies buried in the median of the subdivision built by a later irreverant land owner where she settled on her land, remnants of her famous Apple Orchard still exist across the Pike from her resting place. I plan to attend to her gravesite to get it in top condition anyone wanting to help will be welcome. Granny White park is very pleasant and laid out well, but I agree with a previous writer, people with thier kids on bikes do not belong on the jogging path. read more
