I found the front desk staff to be efficient. I had filled out the online forms with medical history and medications etc so I was just given a few last forms about billing insurance and such for wet signatures. I was given an appt time and a time I should arrive. I was taken back by my appointment time 15 minutes after arrival. The checkin nurse was extremely nice and meet my anesthesia nurse. Both were great and very reassuring for my first time visit. Meet the doctor. He was nice and up beat. Came out of anesthesia and the doctor came in an explained a little bit before I headed out the door. Overall, I thought even with the prep the whole experience went smoothly. read more

The staff at the front desk is nice; however, if you decide you want to go through with a basic colonoscopy there. . . BEWARE: after the treatment, I had bad hip pain in my right hip. I have never had hip pain before in my life. They must have been getting very rough on me when I was under anesthesia. I went to St Mark's 2 times before, and they never caused me hip pain. $$$ is the motive! I received an endoscopy procedure, while I had insurance. When I scheduled the appt, I was told they do a prior authorization to see exactly what my insurnace will pay and what's on me. When I arrived the day of my procedure, they were absolutely not certain of the costs, therefore, didn't really seem like they talked to my insurnace beforehand at all, like they said they would. The day of the procedure, I was told I would likely have $250 to pay outside of insurance. Okay, great, that's not too bad. However, I wanted to ensure that was the correct amount due to their sense of uncertainty, so I put off my procedure for about an hour to go talk to billing to ensure I wouldn't end up with a large surprise bill that I couldn't pay afterwards. Billing was 0 help and they couldn't care less for my concerns and the fact that I told them I'm low income and can't manage a surprise bill. They got me very flustered and stressed right before my procedure. They didn't care. I was told it shouldn't be much more than $250 and not to worry. So I decided to just move forward with the procedure, which I regret more than anything. Lo and behold, a short while after my procedure, I received a bill in the mail for $250 and then another for $730!!!! My fears came true! They were not transparent about the reality of how high the extra costs could be. I did everything to avoid it and it still happened because of the billing people misguiding me and not caring to investigate it further to ensure the true costs. Not to mention, the procedure didn't do anything for me or give any answers and the treatment at the place was mid in general. I'm still having all the same issues I started going there to address. So now I have a huge bill to pay that I can't pay and over the month of November they add TWO late fees! Two in one month really? I'm low income, and talked to them telling them I was going to need more time to pay it and they just proceed to add more late fees. They don't work with you at all. Today, only about 4 months out from the procedure, I received a bill in the mail stating that if I didn't pay the bill in 10 days (actually 6 days due to when I received the bill in the mail- took 4 days to get here from the date marked on it) then they will send it to collections and I will be charged a 50% fee. I've never heard of a debt going to collections that fast, and definitely never heard of a late fee that's that excessive when only 4 months late (it's not like it had been 6+ months of them not being paid). Scare tactics, really? So this is how you're treated when you can't afford to pay for a surprise bill that you tried to avoid up front but got no where because of the lack of care and knowledge from the billing department, and after they were already paid good money from the insurance company. No accountability or empathy at all. I wouldn't recommend this place, not only because of the billing departments lack of compassion and empathy, but also because of all the money I spent just to get 0 answers and to get better 0%. Such a waste. This is what's wrong with healthcare! Based on the other negative reviews that are somewhat similar to mine, I know my experience will be brushed off by management and I will be gaslit like the other reviewers that have had negative experiences have been. Management, I recommend for you and your staff to receive some sensitivity training and always run prior authorization beforehand. Give the patient as much info as possible and show a sense of concern and willingness to help. Myself and other patients have given you insight on how you can improve, now it's up to you to take accountability and make the necessary changes to do so. There's nothing else to say here. Patients beware!!!!!! Updated to add: just four days after making this review, I received an additional letter AFTER they already got paid by me. It was dated just 4 days from the letter warning me of the balance going to collections. So they gave me 4 days and sent another letter, AND added an additional late fee. This place is a total racket and the most unprofessional clinic I've ever been to. Never available to answer the phone, and determined to do everything in their power so you don't speak to a human face-to-face or even by phone. Instead, they try to push all their patients into using an awful, subpar portal so you're relegated to communicating by email. Here is my experience: After two ER visits due to severe GERD associated with nausea and vomiting, I had an endoscopy done at Granite Peaks to determine what could be causing the increase in severity of my GERD attacks which I've experienced for decades. During the intake process, I notified them that I have GERD, something I"ve known for almost 20 years. They didn't bother to request the paperwork from my first ER visit in another state. Dr. Desautels spent all of 2 minutes speaking to me before the procedure. The next day, I received a terse message through their clunky portal from his assistant, Fara, notifying me that I have GERD. That was it. Absolutely no mention about what might be causing the nausea and vomiting (new symptoms as I explained to them multiple times) or concrete next steps for further treatment or any kind of follow up from the doctor himself. So I pressed for more info including calling to speak to Dr. Desautels, but could only speak to his assistant, Fara, who rushed me off the call saying she had to hang up because she had other calls to take. It was the most unprofessional interaction I've ever had with anyone at a medical clinic. After 25 days of going back and forth multiple times via the stupid portal, I was told Dr. Desautels wanted me to schedule an appointment to come in to discuss my condition further. The analogy I made to the clinic manager, Erica, was it was like having your check engine light go on, taking your car into the mechanic, and having the mechanic tell you by email the next day, "There's something wrong with your engine," and then having to press him multiple times (VIA EMAIL! since no one answers their phone and you can't actually speak to the doctor) for more info only to have him tell you to schedule another appointment so he can tell you how to fix it. This place cares NOTHING about their patients as evidenced by not answering their phone, trying to automate everything through a crappy online portal, and not doing their due diligence before and after a procedure. But they were more than happy to try to talk me into getting a colonoscopy as soon as possible while they were prepping me for my EGD. AVOID THIS RACKET AT ALL COSTS! read more

On a positive note, the staff was very friendly and the office well organized but there is significant improvement opportunity at Granite Peaks Endoscopy. Their mission statement states, "promoting the highest level and quality of care possible with the greatest degree of compassion possible." After my experience, Granite Peak Endoscopy has lost focus of being compassionate during a high-anxiety procedure and safeguarding privacy. Granite Peak Endoscopy needs to be more sympathetic to their patients by taking action to improve their front office environment to keep health conversations private and to safeguard health information. At checkin, there is no privacy and the receptionist is stating your procedure out loud and asking about medications you take so everyone in the waiting room can hear, which is lack of safeguarding Private Health Information. After checkin, we sat down in the waiting room and a stranger said to us, "Sounds like a [procedure type], no fun." All forms could be completely digital that when people show up for their appointment there isn't additional paperwork that the receptionist would just need to collect ID and insurance information to checkin patients. Please ask health information questions and procedure type in private with the nurse vs. in a busy waiting room. I was not comfortable checking in with everyone hearing my husband's responses and sitting in the office being able to hear everyone else checkin. Granite Peak Endoscopy called the day of the procedure to move the scheduled appointment time up and was stated in their consent form my husband signed or he would have to reschedule three weeks out. Calling a couple hours before the scheduled appointment is insensitive because, at that point, pre-op steps were taken to prepare, which was a 24+ miserable experience for my husband and required me to leave work early. Then, we had to wait past my husband's initial appointment time with anxiety climbing and him not feeling well from the pre-procedure steps. In recovery, you are divided by curtains that you can hear other patient conversations - there is zero privacy. Some curtains were closed but some were not that you walk past patients that are coming out of anesthesia. Granite Peak Endoscopy, please step inside your curtains to see the gaps. Anyone passing by can see inside while a patient is changing. Observed that they're cranking people through like a machine - you're just a number. The waiting area has so many chairs that walkways are narrow and chairs are all the way up to the front desk. The need to have that many chairs is a sign of patient volume to support demand throughout their work day, which I interpret as business volume focus vs sincere patient care. When my husband has had previous procedures I was allowed to stay with him in pre-op to help calm him, which Granite Peak Endoscopy do not allow loved ones to come back during pre-op to provide support. I appreciate that they want to be time efficient to get us the hell out of there but it comes across as less time with patient for higher volume each day vs being sympathetic to patients feelings. Hope action is taken to drive change so Granite Peak Endoscopy mission statement actually reflects "providing highest-degree of compassion." read more

WARNING!! If you need a GI doc to diagnose a condition that requires more than a preventative colonoscopy or a basic endoscopy for frequent heartburn, DO NOT USE ANYONE at Granite Peaks, they are the Jiffy Lube for endoscopy, its how they make their money, and their physicians have an ownership interest in ordering endoscopies at their endoscopy center. (BTW, you sign a disclosure on this fact) I was referred there after a trip to the ER found abnormalities on a CT scan and my liver and pancreatic enzymes were elevated. The NP, Whitney Christian scheduled an endoscopy and since I'm 46, a colonoscopy so I set those up for after I took my last final for school. She also ordered an MRCP (MRI), and a bunch of blood work which I was able to get done quickly. I am a full-time student and had missed so much school due to my recent medical problems, so I asked them to call or email me back to go over the results. When the results came back, I was able to obtain them on my own, so I knew what the results were, but I didn't know what they meant, however, I couldn't get anyone to answer my questions. I had a gastric bypass in 2001 so when the radiologist that read the MRCP suggested further evaluation through ERCP I looked it up and found out that it was difficult to do an ERCP on someone who had a gastric bypass. After getting nowhere with the NP, she sent me an email that essentially said she wouldn't answer them but if I wanted to go over the results that Dr. Desautels would need me to book an appointment, which is impossible to do because they have limited office hours. I was pissed, so, I had to seek out answers on my own. It took 3 weeks to get into a GI specialist in Provo, but it was worth it and likely saved my life or at least my kidney function getting worse. I saw Dan Ibarra, PA and when I asked about ERCP in gastric bypass patients his answer was simple, it is impossible to do an ERCP in you without major surgery. It requires a general surgeon to open you up and an endoscopist to cut into your duodenum to insert the scope. They do not do them unless they KNOW there is a stone or blockage. He also said, there was no need to do one because my bloodwork didn't indicate a blockage, specifically Alkaline Phosphatase and Bilirubin which were normal. What was more concerning to him was my kidney function blood test was really low, it showed my kidneys were functioning at 50%. He ordered blood test to recheck my liver, pancreatic, and kidney function, so I went to the lab after my appointment and at 3:00pm that same day he called me to tell me he was sending me to a nephrologist because my kidney function test (eGFR) was now 41%. In 28 days, my kidney's lost 9% function which puts me at stage 3b kidney disease, 2 grades away from kidney FAILURE. My endoscopy appointment with Granite Peaks isn't for another week and a half and wouldn't have addressed my kidney function. I didn't get answers because they didn't know the answers. Last, don't bother calling or trying to file a grievance with them because we were hung up on. My husband, who is a pharmacist and has been yelled at by patients and therefore would NEVER treat another medical professional with any disrespect was mid-sentence asking her if there was someone who could call us to answer some questions, specifically if we needed to act faster to address the abnormal test results, when I had to stop him and tell him she hung up the phone. Granite Peaks is a factory line for endoscopy, nothing more. If there's something wrong with you, find a real GI doctor, PA or NP. read more

I can't give you advice on the doctors or nurses who perform actual procedures because I wasn't a patient here, just my girlfriends ride for her procedure. However I can tell you the ladies that run the front desk are the most unprofessional, rude, and just shockingly immature group of front office staff I've encountered. I've had better service from a host at Denny's at 2am. My girlfriends appointment was at 7:15. Well after checking in online, signing forms, and paying we waited until 7:40 to ask if we were going to be helped soon. The lady at the front desk said, "yeah that's your arrival time. Your actually appointment is at 8." Which would be fine if they told you that upfront, and it wasn't accompanied with a bunch of attitude, and an eye roll for good measure. Besides that for the first half of the visit they sat and talked crap about another lady in the office who took time off for Christmas, she apparently "went behind their backs and put her name on the calendar." You snooze you lose, as with any other job where you need to request off time. Also claiming that her family is more important than the other staffs, nice. Shortly after this one of the ladies got a phone call, it was about 10 seconds, her answer to some one was, "I have no idea, okay? Yep, bye." Then turned and said to the other lady, "She couldn't get out her question, spit it out, I don't want to be on the phone all day." Part of your job is to answer the phone, answer the guest questions and help them out. After a couple more people arrived to work either around the office or near the front desk area they quieted down to a whisper, I assume one of the ladies who showed up was the person they were talking crap about for an hour. Another lady at the front desk picked up the phone as it rang and her answer was, "yeah uh huh, we're getting to it as fast as we can, Kay? Bye." Where do you find such phenomenal customer service? What a jo This is really embarrassing for the practice. The face of your practice is not welcoming, not warm, unprofessional, immature, and clearly are not great people. It is very clear that this is just a pay check for these people and they do not care about their patients at all. Just because you wear scrubs at the front desk doesn't mean you're not in customer service. I'm not the only one who has made similar claims in my review either, front office manager needs to get it together. Find someone who actually wants to work here. read more

I had a screening colonoscopy performed by Dr Heiner. He was very kind and professional. However, the billing was done in such a way as to maximize reimbursement. It was correctly coded as a screening colonoscopy. However, it appears that a modifier was billed for a "high risk individual". Five years ago, they found ONE polyp and removed it. As a result, my Medicare payor interpreted this screen as a surgical procedure. So instead of a zero co-pay I ended up with a $250.00 co-pay. When they called to tell me it was time for my next colonoscopy, they should have disclosed that they perceived me as high risk and that it would have an impact on my bill. I am surprised to see negative reviews for GPEC. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences here, and Dr. Schmidt is a fantastic physician! I am sorry other people have had bad experiences, but I cannot identify with their complaints. The staff are always friendly and efficient, and I did not witness the front office staff being unprofessional. As a nurse and healthcare consultant, I take special note of when behavior is inappropriate. Maybe the unprofessional staff weren't there on the days I had appointments. My son saw May Marschner PA for severe stomach cramps and weight loss. She saw him for 5 min, did not even touch his stomach or run any tests. Told him to take fiber. He is still having pains. I called to find out if he could see a different dr in their practice and they said it is their office policy to get permission from the dr to change drs. I called 2 weeks later and they still had not switched his records. I guess next time I'll make sure to see a Dr not a PA that wouldn't even take the time to feel my sons stomach. read more

Avoid this place! I was scheduled for a routine endoscopy, and just before going in the nurse quickly asked me, "oh, is it difficult for you to swallow?" I replied that recently, yes, I had some troubles but it didn't bother me too much. Well, while I was recovering from the anesthesia, they told my husband they had dilated (stretched) my esophagus. We were both confused why they would do that, without my permission...I've had awful heartburn ever since that procedure. Turns out they billed my insurance an extra $1,200 for this procedure- now I know why they did it. Update: I spoke with the billing department at Granite Peaks, and they quickly wrote off part of the bill (for the unauthorized procedure). read more

I had to go see Dr. Barnett for some digestive problems. The receptionist and the Medical Assistant were very kind. Dr. Barnett was very kind and receptive to what I had to say, I did have to schedule to get a colonoscopy and endoscopy, both of which were conducted with professionalism and done quickly and efficiently. When I mean quickly, I don't mean that they were in a rush, just that from start to finish I in the door and had the procedure and then was out the door all within 2.5 hours. I am going to give Granite Peaks Endoscopy Center four star's. It's sad that they don't earn that fifth star due to the receptionist's at the Endoscopy Center. I walked in with my son and was greeted by a young man and I wished I had paid more attention to his name. It was 7:30 a.m. and he had an amazing personality. Took my temperature, checked me in and was incredibly pleasant and kind. My son and I were rudely interrupted by one of the receptionist, screeching about a car that was parked in the parking lot. It happened to be my son's car and she rudely told him that it was garbage day and that he was in the way. The parking spot was clearly marked WASATCH ENDOSCOPY CENTER. She then with the same rude attitude told my son to cover his nose with his mask. The mask was fogging up his glasses and he could not see but it was on and covering the majority of the pertinent areas. I had read previous reviews in regards to the front office staff at the Endoscopy Center and it appears that all of the comments in regards to how rude the front office staff were, were absolutely spot on!!! Patient's enter the center usually very anxious about the procedure or procedures that may be taking place. There is nothing like being afraid and sick and having the first people you interact with treat you rudely, disrespectfully and like they would prefer to be anywhere else other than the heir job. I was slow to fill out my paperwork due to critical lab results that were affecting my ability to think clearly and the receptionist literally yelled at me in a waiting room full of people. She told me in front of everyone that due to me being so slow, the nurse had been waiting for me and was going to go ahead and take the next person before me. I'm so very sorry!!! You sent me no forms in the mail. Your website was not allowing me to enter information and it clearly states the nurse will be calling ahead to review paperwork.Well I waited and waited and no call???? Assuming my procedure was still scheduled I just came on in along with my son who was watching to see how you acted as he was looking for a new GI staff. Needless to say he was not impressed with any of you at the front desk, including the lady that was so incredibly rude to MY GUEST!!! We have been through a lot of very scary times together and the last thing he needed that morning was a front desk full of nasty and mean spirited old ladies. It's extremely sad that the front office people continue to treat patients and family members this way!!! The young man at the front that greeted us, Dr Curtis and the nurses and medical staff in the procedure room are impeccable. They are kind, caring, patient and have amazing people skills!!! Every time we've gone to this center we've been treated with courtesy and professionalism, from the front desk people to those who work in the back. Everyone is kind, courteous and efficient, but never too busy to answer questions or make sure the patient is comfortable (as much as you can be in this situation!) and he or she knows what to expect each step along the way. And afterwards, once you're sufficiently awake, you get a full report of how the procedure went, what to look for that would require a call to your doctor or make an unlikely ER visit. In addition you are also as given written materials about your procedure including a copy of those discharge instructions. No one likes to have endoscopies or colonoscopies, (Oh really, Captain Obvious?), but if you have to get one, I--we, because my husband and I both have had ones there at different times--and we will again--highly recommend Granite Peaks. read more

A friend referred me and I can honestly say I wasn't disappointed in the service I got from Dr. Cutler or his team. My last endoscopy was a nightmare but If anyone can make a endoscopy a pleasant one, Dr. Cutler can. The nurse got my IV started quickly and painlessly and ever step of the way was quick and efficient. This office is full of professionals who are dedicated to making your experience as painless as possible.
