Great big ski resort in the Midwest! It has to be my favorite since the runs are large for Midwest ! Good selection of runs. Pricy merchandise so I bought a cool skeleton sticker for a souvenir. They have rentals and a shop to make any adjustments or repair on your gear. I had my bindings snap so the technician was able To help with a temporary fix. Plan ahead for a busy day. Food In the lodge cafeteria was decent. They were out of cheese curds that day so they had some cheese triangles that look like Makeshift cheese curds. If you're hungry everything tastes great! Typical of resorts, food is mid to high priced so you can bring your own food if you want to save money. They also have a restaurant for other food and drink options. Parking lot was close by so you can walk to your car not too far even on a busy day. They offer a 3 day flex pass you can use conveniently anytime during the season at any of the three resorts: Granite Peak, Luften, and Snow River for a decent price and if add an extra day it's $69.99 or $70. Three hours away from Chicago was a pleasant surprise for a nice skiing slopes. The day before it rained and the snow was still good. They have a couple nice fast chairlifts which is nice. I have come here several times for skiing and I have enjoyed it. The hill offers a fairly good choice for most skiers. On Saturdays they do open additional lifts when it gets busy. The staff are very nice and hardworking. Their ski instructors are awesome! The only issue I have with the place is the lack of good food in the Sundance Chalet. They really need to redo their food offerings. Everything is deep fried, or just junk food, their salads are tiny. The only things we eat here is their chili, chicken noodle soup, a salad, sometimes a brat. They could offer baked potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, a rice dish with sautéed chicken, fresh cut veggie platters. These would be easy for a kitchen to make. read more

I had a great time here with activities for the NYE weekend. We got into town early to hit the slopes as soon as possible. We had ordered tickets and rentals in advance online, which got us a bit of a discount and a speedy check-in. Lines were not too bad and moved pretty quick. We had to get rentals which also went quickly. After getting all our gear on, we were ready to get to the lift. There are greens and blues not too far away from the chalet that are nice to warm up on and get back into it. It was tough for my husband, who's a little more of a beginner to find a flatter part to put his skis on, and to hike up to the snowy hill area. It wasn't to busy in the morning and we had short lift lines. Lots of lifts, some with intermittent stops for some of the green and blue runs. We stopped for lunch at the restaurant right at the bottom of the hill. The menu wasn't too expansive, enough for quick bites and a break from the hill. Everything else, the historic chalet, bathrooms, shops, and rentals are located a level below. You will have to brave the slippery ramp or stairs in your ski or snowboard boots to get to it. Overall, the facilities are all very nice and plenty of space for all the skiers and snowboarders. The staff throughout is very friendly and helpful. The ski patrol kept their safe distance, but would check on you if you were having trouble. Great mountain for a variety of experiences. read more

It's big for the Midwest. It's a fun place? Pretty good lifts, good runs and they keep it groomed. It tends to be on the expensive side but it's worth the experience if you haven't snowboarded anywhere else other than the Midwest. It does have a nice selection of runs, so you can take all skill levels but I don't think this is a great day one place or even a day five place, maybe once you can stop really well and turn, so probably day ten. It tends to be icy , I've been here a couple of times with friends and it's always been icy. The staff is fine, the service in the lodge for food is what you would expect out of a resort nothing to really to write home about but that's not why you are going here. read more

We travelled from Chicago to Wausau for a weekend of skiing at Granite Peak! For the Midwest, and especially for Wisconsin, this is one of the best "mountains" you can find. They have a good variety of colors for runs, but I'll also say that if you're a green person, you might get bored quickly with the few runs available. The lifts to the greens are slow, but the staff is friendly, and although the weekend brings lift lines, the lifts are managed great! They have a cafe, a bar & grill, and a ski/snowboard shop all on site. We went to the bar & grill several times, and let's just say, people aren't there for the food. It's extremely overpriced ($18 for the saddest burger, and $10 for a draft beer), but the atmosphere is fun and the servers do a good job taking care of everyone. The ticket and rental lines moved quick! But just beware that lockers can sell out, so if you want one, plan to arrive at a decent time. Overall, would definitely come back here! I really like this ski resort. I live in northern Illinois and this resort, in my opinion, is the best in the area. The distance is a bit longer and the cost a bit higher, but the hills are good and they have some of the longer runs in Wisconsin. We have been here three times - this time my wife took ski lessons and my son took snowboard lessons. While my son decided that the snowboard was not for him my wife decided she really liked to ski. Their rental equipment is OK but we had a great instructor for my wife. The instructor was patient and helped her get the fundamentals in one hour; my wife went from bunny hills to skiing beginner hills in the same evening. We have found Wausau to be a great place, staying at the Marriott Courtyard and finding several favorite restaurants in the area. read more

Granite Peak or when I first started skiing here Rib Mountain. You're a treasure in the middle of Wisconsin. It has 74 runs/7 lifts and a total vertical drop of 700 feet. The area is capable of 100% snowmaking....That means when the weather is cold, snow is not in the forecast, don't worry, they can make it! An all day adult ticket is $95.00 for Saturday and holidays, while a Sunday- Friday ticket is just $75.00. The ticket price becomes less when purchased for multiple days. We enjoy skiing here as it is just an hour from our Wisconsin getaway. The runs go the gamut of black diamonds, blue and green runs. A nice variety for a day's skiing. While weekends can get crowded, we prefer to ski during the week, that allows us to avoid the crowds and $20.00 each on the lift tickets. I cannot compliment the staff enough, from those that sell the tickets, lift line operators, Ski Patrol and the Sport Shop. For a great way to ski the day away, give Granite Peak a try. read more

Granite Peak is one of the best skiing resorts in Wisconsin. We went night skiing last night - $25 for 4 hours of skiing! I did not need to rent any equipment so I can't speak to that process but everything else ran smoothly. Night skiing is quite popular here, we arrived right before five and had to wait in line. You are supposed to keep your mask on while loading to get on the lift, although this was not enforced due to automatic ticket check points. Only two lifts were open during my visit, however this does cover a good amount of runs. ALSO: when eating, go to the Sundance Lodge if you're looking for more of a buffet/ classic mountain meal. The other building is a nicer restaurant that has a hostess seat you. read more

Granite Peak keeps the season going with plenty of manmade snow, and lift specials during their "Springapalooza", which offers a tiny online discount on tix, but also gives a full day of skiiing, instead of just morning or afternoon/evening session. People working the lifts are well-trained, give clear instructions Great for the advanced skiier and snow boarder, like my son Nice terrain park, moguls, tree runs Best Blue run for adv-beginner was Miracle Run Bought tix online and it was so easy to get our lift passes at the Park! Website is great Lodge has a bar, and a nice outdoor area with burning birch logs (nice aroma) Bad Not so many runs for the advanced beginning skiier, like me Blue diamond runs, while nice and long, but start out expertly steep and icy The Mountain is high (the valley is lowwww)- No middle ground for an "advanced beginner", like me Can we get a nice wide tree run like Sunset Run in the Green area? Ugly The Horrible Kitchen- Letting a kitchen and grill be run by four teenage boys with their heads up their asses is just a bad idea No communication, took 20 minutes to get a Panini. My son's Cheesesteak had none of the peppers/onions advertised, just crumbly beef. Manager told them: "You've got a long line out here". That's not managing, and they're obviously not trained in managing crowd flow Granite Peak has musicians occasionally, and it looks like March 24, 2018 is a Beer Fest- so this can be a place to visit, even if you're not skiing. Traveled to Granite Peak for the first time in early March. Felt it was a pretty good hill for the 5-6hr drive. Was really enjoying it until later Sunday afternoon when we surprisingly found out that the entire operation was about to shut down. Apparently, storms were forecasted for the evening and the decision was made Saturday afternoon to shut down Sunday at 5pm due to potential weather and light crowds. While storms did come through later, so I understand the shutdown, lack of notice on site regarding the shutdown is a problem. While they do put notices on their website and social media, not a peep about it on site. Not at the ticket office, lifts, restaurants/bars, anywhere. Unless you're constantly on your phone, you have no clue. I sought out management and found Gregory S. Fisher, General Manager & Marketing Director. He was very aloof, indifferent, etc. He claimed there should have been white boards with the information at the lifts. There were NOT. It was NOT mentioned at the ticket office Sunday morning. He claimed I was the only one to complain, while others in the lodge were also surprised. Mr. Fisher's defensive an unapologetic attitude is unacceptable as he is responsible for his staff communicating this decision. Albeit the facility is clean, well maintained and they really do a great job of maintaining the skiing surface, customer service seems to be their Achilles heel. I've read several other comments regarding this. If you have no problems, the place is great, but if something needs addressed, you're SOL! read more

Great slopes, great prices! All the lifts were working at full speed, the rental counters were packed that they were running low on inventory. I definitely think there could be a better reservation system on rentals to make sure you get what you pay for as they do not issue refunds. I recommend packing your own food unless mundane artery clogging junk is your jam. What struck me was how poorly maintained the restrooms were, every single one of them. Just gross. read more

Horrible experience. Just horrible. We hired a baby sitter to watch our little children and hired a separate babysitter to pick up our school aged children from school. We took the day off work and came to ski. After driving 3 hours, turns out they're closed!!!!! Guy at the counter said they've been getting a lot of this as the website makes it appear they're open. This is a great place to learn to ski. We have had great instructors and poor ones. But they have always taken our feedback when sharing information about the instructor. I have found the staff to be very friendly and helpful in booking. I prefer to do it over the phone with staff as they are really helpful and knowledgeable. It is a bit pricey, but I don't think it is that out of line with other places. I do want to say that with Covid they are not enforcing mask wearing at all in the rental lodge, bathrooms and other indoor spots I saw. At first they were limiting people in the rental lodge when we got the skis, but when we went to return the skis, it was insane the number of unmasked people crammed in the lodge. Scary almost. There were a lot of teenagers working in rental and they were very busy. Maybe didn't have the time or confidence to regulate mask wearing and distancing? This place has never disappointed me pre Covid but I don't think I will feel comfortable returning during Covid. read more

My kids grew up skiing at Granite Peak. It's our hometown hill. My kids were Junior Olympians and one was high school state champ. It's the best hill in the midwest. Overall, a great ski resort for Wisconsin, but those prices are STEEP! We were visiting with family in the area over Thanksgiving and decided to hit the slopes for the day to get in some skiiing and snowboarding. We knew it would be a good time, but those prices really hit you in the gut! Even with pre-season prices, ski rental and lift ticket alone were over $100 for the day! Getting everything paid for didn't take too long, but I would definitely think twice about going in the future with prices like that. Seriously, the slopes were fun, but that's a lot to ask of a man's wallet. The rest of the experience was otherwise pretty fun and we had a great time on the slopes. It had been a while for me, so I needed to get the hang of things again and there were more than enough green slopes to start off on. The lifts were solid, especially the fast lift for the blue slopes so you didn't have to spend all day on the lift. Overall, it was a good experience, but I'll hunt out a better hill next time that's more cost effective, especially for my more amateur skill level. read more

It seems as if Granite Peaks has an issue with theft. My snowboard was stolen tonight. Multiple other people told us of theft that has occurred to them at this resort - today and in the past. When we went to report the theft we were met with an immediate response of "Granite Peaks is not responsible for theft." We understand that. We were looking to make a report, however, we were met by a rude employee that did not appear to have any concern regarding our situation and let us know "we can make a report if you want?" ... with a tone of "it won't matter." Of course we want to make a report in hopes that the board is returned. No employee that we engaged with gave an impression that theft was odd or that they cared. We have snowboarded for the past 10 years and have never had an issue with theft. We will not be returning to a place that does not take this seriously. read more

Great place to ski and close to the Twin Cities. The resort offers a wide range of terrain and their black diamonds are steep and fast. They have some of the longest runs you'll see in the Midwest. The chairlifts are modern and fast which keeps the lift lines short, even at peak times during the day. They do limit the amount of tickets sold, so if you're coming in from out of town, make sure you buy your tickets online before getting into Wausau. We usually get in on Thursday night, then ride Friday (usually pretty slow) and Saturday (was busy and totally sold out). I like this place, I really do, but here's why I'm only giving it three stars. After not being here for several years, I noticed right away they now have the same ticket/gate system that Lutsen does. When I mentioned this to someone, they told me yes then do, the Skinner family recently bought the resort and have been making upgrades. Oh, I thought that was pretty cool and my enthusiasm for this place just went up a few notches. Then I went to get lunch in their cafeteria. Then I saw how bad this place is gouging people for food and my heart sank. $5 dollars for a small bag of M&M's. $8 for a 16oz can of Mt Dew Kickstart A lunch for two people: 2 personal pizzas 1 Vitamin water drink 1 20 oz Mt Dew 1 bag of chips $48.00 I've been to other Midwest resorts (Afton, Welch, White Cap, Indianhead, Spirit Mountain and many, many others) and expect to pay a little more for the food and drink. But this was WAY above what I would expect. Our lunch in Sunshine Village in Banff in November of this year was around the same price and included my daughters lunch too! Do yourself a favor. Go ride at the resort, enjoy the great terrain and long runs. Enjoy the friendly staff and the great Ski Patrol people they have. Just make sure you bring your own food and skip the cafeteria food there - they're gouging people really bad and there's no need for it. The best in the Midwest! I ski out West every year and have always wanted to try Midwest skiing for a long weekend. After a lot of research I decided on Granite Peak in Wausau, WI. It is a 5 hour drive from Chicago - far enough to feel like a getaway but not too far for a long weekend. I went with no expectations and have to say I was pleasantly surprised with the entire experience. The runs are definitely shorter than out West, but many are steep and give an intermediate skier a little challenge. There is also a lot of tree skiing, some moguls, and 3 terrain parks. We saw lots of kiddos in ski school - seems like a great place to teach kids how to ski/board. You could ski the whole mountain in one day, but it takes about the entire day. We skied two days and did every run, and our favorites a few times. Two days was a perfect amount of time at Granite Peak. There are two lodges, one with just food, and another with food and a bar. The bar is lively and had live music while we were there. It seemed that the same amount of people were chilling in the bar and lodge as were on the slopes! The food is just OK, burgers, hotdogs, popcorn chicken and cheese curds - but good enough. You can't really go wrong with fried cheese. The ski town of Wausau is cute too. We ate out every night and enjoyed walking around the downtown shops. We will definitely be going back for a long weekend! read more

We have been to Granite Peak about five times already and we like it a lot. This is a very good skiing option in Midwest comparing to other resorts. It has a lot of different trails and pretty good vertical drop so everyone can find something for themselves. I hear people are complaining to big tickets lines and they sometimes are but if you buy the tickets in advance (online) they are cheaper and you collect them from special online order window which is always shorter. Make sure you also sign the disclaimer online so you do not have to spend your time at the window. On the other hand the waiting time is largely reimbursed by the new entry system. You get a card with your name to put in the packet (I found left bottom packet to be the best option, make sure you do not have any other credit cards or electronics with it so it cannot be obstructed) and than you just go to the gates after you ski down to the lift. It cuts the waiting time enormously. We were skiing 3 days during the holiday-New Year weekend and never waited more than we expected to. The only thing that needs improvement in my opinion is the bar and bar area. This is considerably the least organized place, it should have better rules for people who actually ski, buy tickets and want to go to rest few minutes and have a beer or drink and this is how it is: people are coming with family members who usually do not even own tickets or ski whatsoever. They take table or far more few tables together and keep them for hours or even whole day so whenever you ski down to the BAR it is most of the time full because all the tables are taken, more over even if they are not taken people leave their belongings so you cannot take their seats when they are gone. This is not fair at all. You pay almost $100 for a day of skiing and cannot go and have a seat for couple of minutes. There are of course seats outside but you will not warm up outside obviously if the weather is not pleasant. I have been in many other places for skiing and Wausau is unfortunately the least organized if it comes to this particular problem especially they have Sundance Chalet on the other side which is much more accommodating for large groups, people with kids or family members that do not ski. I hope this can be taken into consideration for somebody who manage this establishment. Besides above issues they offer wide selection of draft beers, drinks, and some food, like pizza. The bartenders are friendly but sometimes overwhelmed due to a bar being small and vast amount of people getting a beverage at the same time. They have a food court on the same level serving burgers, salmon sandwiches, soups, fish, fries, cheese curds, freshly made and very good I must admit. I never rented any equipment at this location so I cannot vote on that. Overall I rank Granite Peak Ski as a very nice and friendly resort to which we are willing to come back for sure. I just hope they fix some rules for the bar area in the future. read more

Warning NO social distancing!!!!! I was extremely upset about staff not enforcing social distancing and the wearing of masks while inside getting rental equipment as well as the chairlift line!!!! Kids and adults talking and laughing without their masks. You can see their breath in the cold. I felt assured from Granite Peaks website that proper covid safety protocol would be in place. I felt uneasy. Even though you don't ride the lifts with strangers, my family and I had to leave. Drove 4 hours up and lost money on tickets and rentals. It could have been such a nice time if people just wore their masks in line. The Peak runs itself were ok. Most runs were open. Nice to be able to ski through trees. Navigating purchasing lift tickets and ski rentals was pure frustration. The staff were not well trained and were unable to field simple questions. They were disinterested at best and rude at worst. Equipment we reserved and paid for weeks in advance was not available on the day of our arrival. Once you make it through that part, Granite Peak offers comparable runs to other Wisconsin ski hills. I'd recommend it to anyone who lives in the area, owns their own equipment, and can purchase a season pass. read more

Definitely the best slope in the flat Wisconsin area but they do charge you to the bone. Nothing can beat my experience in the California Mountains but this is a great local place to keep practice. The runs will take 2-4 minutes to get down assuming you do not face-plant. They had two runs open with jumps, boxes, and pipes for those who seek a little more adrenaline. There are also the snowboard unfriendly runs with those bumps (I can't remember what they are called). The ski lifts towards the right side, looking upwards at the hill, are really nice and quick. The other ski lifts aren't rickety but not as new. Again, great place! Even though this is a great place, I would not recommend a newbie to start here. Growing up as a skier, I have always been jealous of snowboarders. I decided to give it another go my last trip and it was quite scary especially if you get on the wrong lift. Once you are at the top, you are at the top... Yes, you do have the shameful option to walk or slide down on your butt if you can bear to listen to the guffaws and obscenities being shouted down to you from the ski lifts. I have been to Granite Peak many times, even before it was Granite Peak, and have always enjoyed my trip. Before this trip, I would have given it a 4 star rating. Here is why I'll NEVER go back and NEVER recommend the hill to anyone. It really comes down to two issues: getting a lift ticket and customer service. It took us 1 hour and 32 minutes (I timed it) to wait in line to purchase lift tickets. We got in line at 9:30 AM (peak time, I know) and didn't get our tickets until 11:02 AM. That's insane! All of the ticket lines were open (see the picture below - that's a 1.5 hour line) but barely moving. It turns out that Granite Peak has a new digital waiver system. We had all completed our waivers online (along with many others in line). It didn't speed the process up at all. We could have purchased tickets online; however, the student rate isn't offered and tickets cost more online than at the window. So that wouldn't work for our group of 5. When I finally got to the ticket window, the kid behind the glass was practically inaudible and extremely rude. We tried to be as polite as possible (it's not his system). We asked if there was anything he can do to lower the price because we had been in line for so long and wasted our morning. He said there wasn't and to go into the office to ask for a discount. We purchased the tickets and headed into the office. We had to wait in line again behind a bunch of angry and vocal customers all disgruntled about the long ticket lines. The office workers didn't care at all and told us discounts could only be applied at the ticket windows, thus creating an infinite loop... TL;DR - Ticket line took 1.5 HOURS and no one at the hill seemed to care. Granite Peak truly ONLY cares about taking money and not your experience. read more

My absolute favorite place. New RFID lift works great and I recharge the card online (discounted) so I don't have to wait in line. Good mountain with Express Lifts makes the higher costs worth it. We chose GP after hearing that it is one of the best in the Midwest area. As a novice skier, I mostly enjoyed my experience here and would come back another weekend when the high was more than 0 degrees. PROS: -Lots of runs of varying difficulties, although for a novice like me I do wish there were a few more blues -The lifts are efficient and fast and seat a lot of people -chalet and rental areas are pretty central and not difficult to get to -service was good at the rental place CONS: -my biggest gripe is that it was kind of unclear which lifts led to which trails and only a few maps around, also some of the maps seemed outdated -the runs are short, especially the blue ones so it ends up feeling like youre on the lift for a majority of the time. But this was similar to Cascade and Devils head -the lines are so slow for buying passes!! -the East side dasher lift closes at 4pm -it is a bit pricey read more

First time here since childhood! First day skiing of the season. Remarkably better conditions than I expected! But for November 18th in Wisconsin not bad! Only gripe, full price lift tickets! Only 27% open and it rained here yesterday. Conditions supported s half price event. Lodge at base is nice and modern full service bar Zing Zang Virgin Mary delicious! Nice garnish! This is among the worst run facilities I have been to. Three years in a row I have driven from Chicago to ski here with my kids. Every year there has been a different issue. This year we reserved online a week in advance because we were told that there would be limited capacity. When we arrived, we learned that they had run out of size 11 snow board boots and one fo my sons was unable to board even though I paid in advance. My other son had to wear boots 2 sizes too big in order to board. The second day we returned to find out there were no boots at all so neither of my sons were able to board. The management told me I would be refunded for all days that we were unable to use equipment only to find out a week later from the rude manager that he would not be giving me money back for the second day. I will never ski this resort again. Get new management. read more

If you live in the midwest and are truly a serious skier, Granite Peak is about as good as it can possibly get without hopping on a plane and flying to the Rockies. That said, it's still a far cry from the Rockies, but we take what we can get, and Granite Peak sits at the very top of that heap of what's still convenient. At a 4-hour drive from Chicago, if you have the time to put into driving, GP is so worth bypassing Wilmot, Grand Geneva, Little Switzerland, Cascade, Alpine Valley, and Devil's Head. No other ski resort this close gives you this variety of terrain from beginner to fairly-legit double-black diamond runs. There are several high-speed lifts and a few slow-pokers, but overall, you feel like you can get a lot of quality runs in versus spending the entire day on the lift (I'm talking to you, Cascade). The employees are all incredibly friendly and well trained, from the lodge to the gift shop to the Lifties, everyone is all about customer service. The prices are a little steeper than other ski areas, but they have a superior product and they're charging for it. Food wise, the cafeteria at the lodge is good for all kinds of fried foods, but after 1 or 2 meals of cheese curds, fries, chicken tenders and corn dogs, you sort of begin to crave something more wholesome. From what I could observe, the rental shop has pretty decent and newer Rossignol skis and Dalbello boots, compared to other places where the equipment is older and not well-maintained (I'm talking to you, Grand Geneva). If you are looking for the most ski time on the mountain and you're mostly into expert trails and above, I recommend heading to either the far left side of the mountain or the far right side of the mountain. Both of these are services by high-speed lifts (Cupid and Dasher) and not many people venture over there (compared to the center where the expert runs are serviced by a lift (Blitzen) that is S-L-O-W as heck and stops every 3 minutes because the beginner runs are also serviced by the same lift and people are falling down all the time. I give this rating of 5 stars based entirely on the skiing experience for the Midwest. Could there be improvements? Yes. For instance, improving WiFi in the lodge (or even on the mountain) would be a nice upgrade. They have WiFi, but the signal was very weak to nonexistent. People love to post pics from the slopes and love to chat with friends on the slopes. For some reason, the cell signals for T-Mobile and AT&T were spotty at best on the mountain. It would be helpful if they also placed trail map boards at the top of EVERY lift instead of just a couple. Helmet Cam rental would be a fun addition to the offerings as well. Overall, like I said, GP is about as good as skiing is going to get if you live in the central midwest and want to drive less than 10 hours. read more
