I have been a horse owner for many years, and have become very selective about boarding facilities. GMS is superb! The care and consistency of their managers and owners is stellar. The barn manager Sam is incredibly knowledgeable, aware and invested in the best interest of the horse. The owners are on site daily and make every effort to create community for their boarders. Ever since Sam and Kevin came on board as barn managers and overall management late last year, we couldn't be happier!! Sam (Samantha) knows horses, from gaited to not, trained or not, anatomy, structure and physiology, healing techniques, and on and on. Kevin, Sam's husband, is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to the maintenance and overall care of the barn, corrals, etc. We first started boarding a month prior to their arrival and were very disappointed with the barn management the month prior to Sam and Kevin's arrival and were actively looking for other facilities. We were very happy with the owners, Jacque and Ed, and after expressing our concerns about the then manager, were told the current manager would be leaving and new managers would be coming in. So very grateful we did not move. Our horse, Dancer, a beautiful gaited Tennessee Walker loves his barn stall, the other horses boarded there and is particularly happy with Sam. If we could give 10 stars, even that wouldn't express our opinion of how wonderful things are there. We had a colic issue shortly after Sam came in and she was on top of it immediately. She had Dancer immediately taken to the vet and by the time he arrived his intestines had twisted. We were incredibly lucky that he was able to untwist them himself so surgery wasn't necessary; a miracle happened that day and because of Sam's constant attention to the horses, Dancer is doing beautifully now. The previous manager never mentioned giving psyllium when we brought him from California as she should have given the difference in soil, etc. We are hopeful that Sam and Kevin will remain at Granite Mountain Stables forever. That goes for the owners, Jacque and Ed as well. read more

The staff were very nice and accommodated 3 inexperienced riders and their mom, who was an intermediate level rider. After leaving 3 messages and an email, I finally caught the guy in the evening on his cell phone, and he informed me that they no longer do any trail rides or instruction. I suggested he update his website with this information, and he assured me he would. As we talked, he seemed like a very nice man, and told me the insurance costs for public riding are no longer affordable for him. read more

Owner is a crusty cowboy with a heart of gold for horses. It is a one-man operation with boarders filling in where needed. While facility is old it is clean. I was happy with the service provided while my horse stayed there for 2016-17. She was transported over night to GMS where owner received her in the wee morning hours. When I called to ask if she was okay. He said, "Darlin, she came off that ride like she was a Queen! Don't you worry, I'll take care of her like she was my own until you get here." I boarded my horse here for about three months. By the middle of the second month, one of the horses next to mine got sick with "strangles" and instead of being sent to a quarantined stall the horse was left to touch noses with the other horses around him, including mine. It was about a week after I had noticed the horse in the stall next to us looked pretty sick, then my horse got sick too! They day I called Cam to my stall to have a look at my sick horse he said I better call the vet out right away. The puss pocket was drained at my horse's throat and a shot of penicillin was given, then the vet left. Cam then asked me in a hushed tone to "keep quiet about this". A couple days later I saw some fellow boarders loading a couple horses in a trailer, they were going out for a group trail ride. I was afraid to tell them about the sick horses because Cam told me not to!! ... and Cam obviously said nothing to them before they trailered their horses out. Any responsible/experienced horse person knows how contagious strangles is, and that the gates should have been "locked" to prevent horses from going in or out until the sickness had run it's course through the stable. I felt outraged! Because he had kept quiet about the horse next to mine, my horse also got sick! I spent the following three weeks making daily trips to the stable to care for and medicate my horse while he recovered. After six weeks and my horse was considered no longer contagious, I moved my horse to another stable. Sad but TRUE. It's a nice well-kept stable, but the owner is DISHONEST. read more

After scheduling a ride with my dauhgter two days in advance (the stables wanted us to do this) , the stables called my niece shortly before the scheduled time saying they wanted to know if they could reschedule to an earlier time. When my niece referred them to our cell number (we are visitors from out of town) the stables never called to ask. Then, after we had left the hotel to drive to the stables we recieved a rude call in transit saying the stables could not make the scheduled appointment. Altogether a very disappointing and time consuming process, not to mention the inconsiderate treatment and wasted gas. I would recommend that toursits avoid Granite Mountain Stables. read more

We called and called and called. We knew they needed 2-3 days notice. We wanted to ride on Monday so I started calling on Friday. No acknowledgement until I finally called the cell phone number and the guy who answered sounded irritated that I bothered him. He told me the weather had been bad (where?!) and he would have to find a ranger. He texted back that he couldn't get anyone to help us until Thursday. Sorry. Bad customer service all around. We found another stable that was more than happy to provide some horses to fulfill my girls' spring break wish. Looking to ride? Don't bother with Granite Mountain Stables. They don't seem to care about your business. read more

As visitors to AZ, and very experienced midwest horseback riders (we own 4 horses of our own)we stopped by the stables on a Tues. to inquire about a trail ride for Wed or Thurs. Other than all the horses in stalls and outdoor turnouts, the place looked deserted. We had to hunt and find someone to talk to. Finally found the owner Cam, asked about a trail ride within the next couple days, his quick and a bit rude response to my husband and I was, "ain't gonna happen girls". Said he needs 3-4 days notice. His website states 2-3 days. My take away impression is "this business doesn't want trail ride business". I believe he's more interested in the boarding business. I would seriously recommend passing up on trying to book this particular stable for your Prescott area horseback riding experience. I think he needs to remove his advertising for horseback rides from his web site and just stick to boarding. His personal PR is greatly deficient. Upon leaving this stable I called Foothills Ranch, and was graciously scheduled for a trail ride for the following morning. The owner Al was great! Maude and Larry, our mounts, did a fine job taking us safely down the trails giving us a glimpse of the AZ terrain in that area. Al was wonderful to talk with during our ride. He gave us personalized attention and was very informative on many interesting subjects, both past and present for AZ . Thank you, Al. read more
