    Pam and Dancer

Ever since Sam and Kevin came on board as barn managers and overall management late last year, we couldn't be happier!! Sam (Samantha) knows horses, from gaited to not, trained or not, anatomy, structure and physiology, healing techniques, and on and on. Kevin, Sam's husband, is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to the maintenance and overall care of the barn, corrals, etc. We first started boarding a month prior to their arrival and were very disappointed with the barn management the month prior to Sam and Kevin's arrival and were actively looking for other facilities. We were very happy with the owners, Jacque and Ed, and after expressing our concerns about the then manager, were told the current manager would be leaving and new managers would be coming in. So very grateful we did not move. Our horse, Dancer, a beautiful gaited Tennessee Walker loves his barn stall, the other horses boarded there and is particularly happy with Sam. If we could give 10 stars, even that wouldn't express our opinion of how wonderful things are there. We had a colic issue shortly after Sam came in and she was on top of it immediately. She had Dancer immediately taken to the vet and by the time he arrived his intestines had twisted. We were incredibly lucky that he was able to untwist them himself so surgery wasn't necessary; a miracle happened that day and because of Sam's constant attention to the horses, Dancer is doing beautifully now. The previous manager never mentioned giving psyllium when we brought him from California as she should have given the difference in soil, etc. We are hopeful that Sam and Kevin will remain at Granite Mountain Stables forever. That goes for the owners, Jacque and Ed as well.

Called and left a message 5/20 about three of us wanting to ride by the end of that week. Still haven't heard back.

She had no control over the horse, and was told not to try to gain any kind of control over her. She was told not to touch the reins, which was stupid he said she would be fine as long as the trail ride kept moving but then would stop to talk to everyone, and this horse would go off trail through the trees again and he would yell at her telling her not to touch the horses reins. He also told my mother in law that she had to kick her horse harder to make him go faster, but the horse was either lame or had an injury on his hoof and couldn't go faster probably because he was in pain. We hadn't noticed this until reviewing pictures I took while on the ride his hoof was bandaged up maybe from an abscess. My mother in law said I have been kicking him he isn't going any faster, and the guide said "you're meaning to tell me you have been on that horse for 30 minutes and know him better than me, and I've been around him for 3 years?! I guess we all learn something everyday don't we?! Ha!" It was a nice ride overall, just wished they gave some more instruction to first time, younger riders about how to ride a horse and not just sit on one. I used to barrel race and not having control of your horse and being told not holding the reins of a horse is just a dumb and dangerous idea honestly. They literally just put my daughter on a horse and didn't give any instruction. In hindsight this was my fault for putting her in that situation but it luckily went ok, and I'm glad she wore a long sleeve shirt and I tried to instruct her and she was able to back the horse up out of a tree, towards the end of the ride because I had to tell her not to listen to him grab the reins and pull that horse back! Great ride if you are an experienced rider, but I would advise against this for a newer or nervous rider.

She was flexible, accommodating, and genuinely committed to making our adventure special. I brought my two grandchildren along, and they had an absolutely wonderful time. The horses themselves were beautiful, healthy, and easy to ride--clearly well cared for and well trained. Our ride through the Prescott National Forest was nothing short of spectacular. As we followed Big Bug Creek and made our way deeper into the forest, both Phyliss and Janice shared an incredible wealth of knowledge. Their understanding of horses, combined with their deep appreciation for the area's history, made the experience unforgettable. We learned about the region's gold mining past, Native American history, early settlers, and even the geology, plant life, and wildlife that make this part of Arizona so unique. It was an education wrapped inside the best trail ride we've ever been on. Foothills Ranch offers far more than a simple horseback ride--it's a meaningful, memorable experience led by people who truly love what they do. I can't recommend it highly enough. Jim H

So glad we chose the Hat Ranch, as it suits our outdoor style to a "T". The directions in were very easy to follow, and our Toyota Tacoma picked up a beautiful red patina of Arizona dust. Sharon, our host, greeted us at the main house and then escorted us to our quarters. As this was our first time here, she took extra time explaining all about our stay, which included a home cooked breakfast today. You can Google the Historic Hat Ranch for all the cool details, but suffice to say there are some very presidentially mended fences here on the expansive 2,800 acres. Our room was very nice, twin beds and a nicely appointed bathroom. Also a spacious deck to view the open Ranch space. We opened the windows and breathed in the fresh air...scented with juniper and noble fir trees right out our door. We didn't see any, but Sharon told us Elk frequented the area often. Many other wild creatures to see too, including javelinas. The baby colt on the way in made my wife's day, and he quickly posed for some pictures and romped away. This has been a perfect cherry on the top of our anniversary Sunday. If you love the outdoors and crave a rustic Ranch experience with warm hospitality, the Hat Ranch is the place for you.

By the end, she was a completely different rider with Saara's help. I grew up riding, so Saara let me take the lead for much of the trail and we went at the pace we dictated. She was taking photos of us throughout and send them promptly at the end of the ride. The trails she selects have magnificent views, and you truly get to ride--not like sitting in a horse caravan with a line of riders at the big riding places. Her horses are clearly happy and well cared for, and they are alert and fun to ride. Again, nothing like the big places with worn down, overworked horses that hate what they're doing day in and day out. This is by far the best riding experience you can pick in Sedona for groups of four or less.
