I think the mileage to the top and back was about 8-9 miles (check WTA or Alltrails), which is a stretch for my norm, but on top of that, my partner and I went on a day after peak season. What this meant is that the trail was a bit stream-like, adding the need to maneuver a bit and hop side to side to avoid getting soaked feet. (Nope, I didn't wear something waterproof, but I did bring a raincoat.) Also, the river that we eventually hit was a bit... big, but we had passed some hikers who told us the trick to get across... where some other hiker had laid down some branches like a human beaver. At the top, it was breathtaking, both in its LOTR-style beauty with rocks and horizon and its chill -- as in the way you could look around and see the wind sweeping to and from little bushes on its way to the trees. We had thought about camping that day, but I chickened out, which was a good thing because of the difficulty of the hike (um, also carry camping gear, no thank you) and the temperature. We huddled behind a rock for some cover for a bit while we stretched and took in mother Earth, but soon had to start our journey down back to the land of hot cocoa. Bottom line: If you want an exceptional hike and can take the elevation and, if going off-season, streamy trail, go, go, go!

This hike however will reward you with beautiful views and a workout and if you make it to the top you will feel beyond proud of yourself. A quick climb up the ladder to the fire lookout will take you back into history with old letters and photos of what this land once was! It was too hot to read through everything when I came up so I will have to make more trips. The road going up is filled with holes, large holes that your whole car will dip into. I took it slow at first until another car passed me and I found the right technique for my subi. Yea a subi can definitely make the trek but just be gentle on your cars and enjoy the journey! The hike up is all stairclimbers. It's definitely not a walking trail for a casual stroll; it's strenuous but very fun. I felt I was in great cardio shape while hiking but my hips and knees definitely made it harder. Stairs made of stones, stairs made of wood, and the last bit leading to the lookout is all hopping over rocks and even pulling yourself up. Bring your hiking poles and it'll definitely help! $5 for parking without a Discovery pass.

It's pretty quick to get to the falls from the parking lot, with some stairs and a nicely graded trail. I was saddened to see that the eponymous falls were marred with graffiti all over. It would have been gorgeous to see the white rocks untouched by jerks who don't appreciate nature. I don't understand it. I think that it would also be too dangerous for people to clean up the rock, and the remoteness would make it hard to take action against repeat vandalism. There were plenty of migrating salmon making their way up the river. It's a great spot to spend some time in nature.

I took my little pontoon boat out on it and had a great time and also chilled out on the dock. I think they should scrub the dock down here and there as it was pretty gross with fowl poop :( But that's my only complaint!!

I came with just two other guys and there were groups of all sizes to parties that had enough people for a full raft to both guys and girls who came on their own and joined in on a raft like ours who didn't have a party that would fill a full raft. If you're signing up for the morning session dress appropriately. I went rafting before but it must have been in the middle of the day because at that time I was hot in my gear, this time I was super cold. The trip was a blast. The guides are awesome. One raft lost people to the drops but we helped rescue everyone. I think it's totally worth your time and money. Save up for the experience, it certainly is worth it. If you are going to do only 1 or so trips, do the class 5.

Plan accordingly. http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ Outdoor adventures keeps the guided groups small (maximum 12 people). I appreciate the small groups since this was my first time kayaking. Three types of kayaks are available: single, double or triple occupancy. Discover is an accepted form of payment. A Discover Pass is required to park at Spencer Spit. If you do not have a pass, a $10 day pass can be purchased with cash or check. There were several rangers checking passes on our visit so be sure to have a pass visibly displayed to avoid being ticketed. WHAT TO BRING - Signed Release of Liability - Bathing suit or non-cotton under layers preferred - A synthetic shirt (capilene, polypro, Under Armor, etc) - Shorts or pants made of a synthetic material (may get wet/damp) - Lightweight fleece jacket or windbreaker/rain jacket to provide warmth - Water shoes or sandals that strap on (or shoes that can get wet) - Sun hat and/or sunglasses - Sunscreen and chapstick - Water bottle - Optional; Camera, Plastic bag for wet items and change of clothing - If you have a gift certificate or prepaid voucher (such as Groupon) please bring a printed copy with you! Dorito Dan was our guide for the day. Dan was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The first hour is dedicated to introductions, procedures and safety. Be sure to use the restroom before departing. Once on the water, there is no turning back. Kayaking is great for teamwork and communication. Both are required to avoid frustration. I recommend wearing weight-lifting/bicycle gloves in order to prevent blisters. Each person in our group started getting blisters towards the end of the tour. During our 3 mile kayaking trip, we spotted starfish, seals and majestic bald eagles. Thank you Outdoor Adventures for providing a magnificent day of play while surrounded by gorgeous Mother Nature. We all plan to return in the near future for another go-around.
