New island with granite countertop.

Thank you Granite City! We're still finishing up our kitchen but it feels so complete with the beautiful job done! I love my granite countertops!!

Surface should be flat but sections were installed wrong

I cannot, in good conscience, write a recommendation for Granite City Countertops in Livonia, MI. In fact, I must caution prospective customers to do some research before using them. The job they performed for me was ultimately acceptable, but it required four visits, significantly delayed my project, cost me additional resources, and disrupted major holiday plans. The main countertop was installed adequately, but the bar-level countertop was installed with insufficient support, was far from level, and was not square or aligned with the rest of the project. The backsplash behind the sink was not even close to parallel to the sink. They returned to remove that bar countertop and the attached photos demonstrate the condition it was in prior to the repair visit I had to request; the photos are not work in progress. The store representative incorrectly contends that the cause was a poorly-built wall to support the bar. I have two problems with that: 1) The wall was not dimensionally changed before the successful installation, therefore, it was sufficient for the intended purpose. 2) While I acknowledge the wall was not prepared in a manner ideally-suited for the purpose, Granite City was implored on multiple occasions to provide input into the design and structural support required for their installation and refused to lend meaningful advise. Instead of correcting the mistake during the initial installation, the installers used copious amounts of silicone and shims to give the appearance of a finished job; the root cause for this was that the backsplash piece was cut too tall. Instead of correcting it, they allowed the bar to rest on it (rather than the wall). Their attempt to compensate for it resulted in support brackets that were rendered useless and an unlevel countertop. My caution to prospective customers is that many competitors take seriously the factors involved in installing a counter with a significant overhang and actually design and install the support structure needed for the application. Granite installers should be the best ones to know what is required for the product they are installing. It is unreasonable to expect that the homeowners or their contractors possess that knowledge. As an obvious example, only the Granite company knows where they will be making seams, which are the weak link in the installation. They should at least be willing to work hand-in-glove with the customer's contractors. Granite City seemed entirely disinterested and frankly aloof during all attempts to plan and prepare the project for their installation. I recommend that shoppers search for granite companies who invest in all aspects of the installation. I will end with two positive comments: 1) Granite City was fast and would have been able to turn around the project much quicker than the competition (1 week vs. typical 3 weeks). 2) They were committed to fixing the mistakes, and since they had to re-make the backsplash, they allowed for a modification to the outlet openings without charge. [I edited this post to remove a concern for which Granite City did not bear full responsibility.]

I only give reviews to businesses worth reviewing and Granite City is truly one business I honestly feel that I must get the word out there on the great selection they offer, outstanding customer service and most of all, they deliver within the exact timeframe they promise! I found them while surfing the net and immediately paid a visit to the showroom. We were warmly welcomed by Stephanie who was very friendly and very knowledgable with the product line and who went well out of her way to help us select and purchase the counter that truly satisfied out needs and was very supportive all the way down to the delivery and install! Now thats service worth five stars! They came and measured and with in a couple of days they delivered in the exact date and time they promised! I highly recommend Granite City to everyone! Thank you everyone at Granite City for an outstanding service and we look forward to doing business with you again and I mean soon as we plan to renovate our kitchen!

Look at that gap! NEVER ASKED US ABOUT LEAVING IT LIKE THAT!

Another UPDATED Review: After receiving very threatening emails from Granite City to "remove my posting or else," I thought I owed it to all the yelpers to tell the entire story as opposed to only telling some highlights. I should note that I had Granite City install a kitchen countertop in 2010 for the exact home design and the project mentioned below. That encounter was 5 years ago, so I cannot provide the details... but I do recall a not impressed, wasn't horrible situation. From the beginning of this 2015 project, Granite City has been horrible to deal with. Unfortunately, the company that we used to work with for our granite project for our home and rentals has retired so we were forced to find another company. After trying another granite company, which did a horrible job on one of our houses, we were again forced to go back to the drawing board and find yet another company. We shopped around for many quotes, which you can see from other yelps. And although Granite City was by far not the cheapest, Jon assured us that him and his team would do a good job (quotes from his email: "I have attached a revised estimate for you, I can not price match the other company, I can promise a good job with first quality granite, please see attached any questions reply or call."). We were looking forward to establishing a relationship with a company for all the rentals we manage- looks like we will keep looking! We decided collaborate with Granite, so we scheduled our appointment for the measurement a couple weeks in advance so we could work around everyone's schedule because this is for one of our rental homes. Our tenants took a day off so that they could accommodate the measurement appointment. At 2:30 the day of the appointment, I get a call stating that they cannot make the 2-4pm appointment which was scheduled two weeks prior. We also asked them to assure us that they commit that timing due to our tenants scheduled, we were told that wasn't an issue. When I told Jon on the phone how disappointed that I was, his response was "well, this is out of my control.... I cant control what my guys do." He also told me that it is not responsibility when they miss appointment times. My tenant changed committed plans again to accommodate their schedule. The gentlemen that came into the home did not wear booties or remove their shoes when they walked throughout the house and were very rude to her. She called me while Jon's team was there to let me know how horrible his team was. I have had many contractors in the home and we have not had any situation like this before. And regretfully, we decided to just get the job done and committed to Granite City. I informed Jon via an email about the behavior of his team- his response was "well, were you there?" We opted to not go with Granite to do the countertop removal, we instead had another contractor come out to do the plumbing unhooking and removing the cabinets. Per our contract, Granite will not deal with that plumbing- completely understandable. The contractor assured us that the cabinetry was completely level so we would not have an issue with shimming or anything. Once the installation day came, the team was again very rude to our tenant. Attached are some pictures of the job. I was assured in Granite threatening email that the pictures I posted do not accurately reflect the finished job. So when you view the pictures, please imagine them without the tools on top and that is what the finished job looks like. Considering I have done a plethora of home remodels, I know that quarter round will fill those shim holes nicely, especially because the entire countertop is equally shimmed (meaning it was level prior to the installation). I expressed my dissatisfaction which went unacknowledged and paid the rest of the granite installation. As a business owner, I understand that not everything can go smoothly all the time... but, I do know that not acknowledging or sympathizing with your customer causes further strain. Per your email- Yelp requested that you work with me privately... I am sure they did not mean send verbally abusive or threatening emails. Fellow yelpers- Save yourself A LOT of headache and hassle go elsewhere.

Granite City really put the finishing touches on my new kitchen!

I mainly dealt with Jon who was a pleasure to work with, as well as others in the office if he was not there.
