This place was very... mehh. The bbq sauce taste errily similar to Chef Boyardee sauce, which is not ideal for any bbq joint. The jalapeno sausage was dry as dry could get. The beans and potato salad tasted the best by far, if that tells you anything about their barbecue. read more

Yum!! Great place for BBQ, and by the looks of it, very popular too. I Had one of the best baked potatoes I've had for a long time. It was huge and although I was hungry, could only eat about 1/2 of it. I got the baked BBQ potato special for about $9. It had beef, bacon, sour cream and a bunch of other stuff that made it super Yummy! The main ingredient was, of course, BBQ sauce! The special also comes with a side order, which I chose the peach cobbler (yum!) and a huge drink. Definitely got my required liquid intake with that gigantic drink! Place is really cute in a Texas kind of way, and very Cow-boyish (he he). There is a small Derrick and a carriage outside, as decoration. Inside there are lots of Southern stuff. Deer horns, the napkin holders are lead lone stars, cowboy pictures, etc. The line was very long when we went in, but within 7 minutes we were ordering... could definitely have been worse. Omg.... how the HELL do you mess up BBQ??? Like, it's the only style of food that you just can't get wrong; smoke and time, that's it. The meat is Hhhhhhoorrible, unbelievable. - the smoked chicken is hardly smoked, I honestly think they bake it in smoke flavored oil and bake it, that was worst tasting - brisket is rubbery, they probably don't even cook it right, no doubt about it, that is not smoked brisket - chopped meat sandwich is a mystery. I didn't know brisket has rubbery chunks of fat and some other consistency I can't put my finger in it. It's like I was chewing on cartilage of some kind - the steak. The freakin steak!! How dare they say best steal!! They buy frozen meat from some local supermarket and add some Walmart steak rub on it and cook it on a skillet is what it seems like because it has hardly any crust or sear, and the flavor of freezer burn from the supermarket is so prevalent in the meSt you can't help but think where they bought and how it's being stored. This place needs a whole new recipe change, chef change, just stop cooking how your cooking and do it differently. I've been here 2 times now. Stay away. read more

Omg, this place was delicious!!! In all our years of living here we finally took all the recommendations about this place into consideration and tried it. I got the 2 meat combo (brisket & sausage) with a baked potato on the side. The meat was so juicy and tender and the potato was huge!!!! My husband got the catfish platter and it was so juicy and flavorful. We also shared some amazing boudin balls and had peach cobbler to go. Definitely will be coming here from now on for bbq! I've been to this location a handful of times over the years, but I guess I never wrote a review. They cater to many of the nearby industrial/plant workers, like their Texas City sister location, so they can get busy at peak times and if you're in a hurry to get in and out, well, you may be out of luck. I generally order the combo lunch sandwich on jalapeño cheese bread. With the lunch special, for $10.99, you get brisket and links on their homemade jalapeño cheese bread, along with 1 side and a drink. On my recent visit, I chose their jambalaya as my side. It was room temperature, tasted just like spanish rice with bits of brisket added in, and fairly dry. My sandwich was good, but not great. To me, this is the type of bbq that's good, but not something you would drive across town to get. The brisket I usually get is sorta dry and hard. My favorite part is maybe the bread and dark bbq sauce. Supposedly their sweet tea is "famous", but it tastes just like most other sweet teas around Houston to me. read more

Super tender brisket! Excellent customer service! Can't say my baked potato blew my socks off but I ended up eating the whole thing so it obviously wasn't bad. Was good when the owner's were there daily. Not so much anymore, the 'management' is over his pay scale. How hard is it to not put cheese on the BBQ baked potato? As is my habit, I get the Texas trinity (brisket, ribs & sausage). My thoughts: Brisket - My slices were tender though lacking in smoke flavor. Not sure if the bark was trimmed off, but a little bit disappointing. Sausage - A little bit dry, but nothing that really stood out (good or bad). Ribs - The end pieces were a bit dry / overcooked. The ones to the center were flavorful and moist. Out of the three meats liked the ribs the most, wished they had all been cut more from the center. In this area it's difficult to find a place that's not a Mexican restaurant or fast food joint. It is VERY busy during lunch time and I recommend coming in after 1:30 to have a better opportunity of getting a seat for 2-4 people. Their BBQ is great, not too seasoned and they are very generous with the BBQ sauce. I ordered a giant brisket sandwich and portion size was very large. Side salad was good and they have a lot of different dressings to chose from. I tried the peach cobbler and it was alright. Not a very flaky crust and sugar on top wasn't quite cooked just sprinkled on. You can skip that. We also ordered the fried catfish and French fries, highly recommend. Even though I called ahead, the order was not ready when I got there. They gave me pints of sides, even though I paid for quarts. The place is great and always packed at lunchtime. I got the super chop sammich, that is my go to meal when I eat here. I try to eat here twice a month. The staff is always friendly and the manager is always helpful in picking out food or giving suggestions. Not good, brisket isn't any good and their sausage isn't any good either. I've been here twice at lunch time and both times they we're out of turkey. One time I got the brisket and it was dry with no flavor. Tried the sausage the second time because they was out of turkey again. For BBQ in Texas you better be striving to be the best when you pay $13 for the "super chop" and you get 2 pcs of bread that look like 2 Loafs of bread and one scoop of chopped beef and two pieces of sausage You start to wonder why they call it the super chop you can't advertise home of the super chop if you just gonna make somebody a regular chop beef sandwich. I'm from Texas I know good barbecue because Texans are surrounded by barbecue this was not the worst "regular chop beef sandwich" that I've had but it is definitely not the best grand prize definitely needs to step their game up at least the one over here off of 225 and Preston. Also when you say you want a super chop and the young lady manning the til has no earthly idea of what you're trying to order at Grand Prize barbecue home of the "super chop" you also start to begin to question the barbecue they're serving people. What this place has going for it is location. It's a convenient place for me to grab lunch quick without having to drive too far. I feel the prices are a bit too high relative to the quality of food. While the chopped beef is tender, it's lacking in flavor. Not a stong smoked taste at all. The BBQ sauce looks good but is uninspiring,....again lacking in flavor. Portion size is large but that means nothing is the food is flavorless. The jambalaya side is a joke. Being a Louisiana native I find most jambalaya offerings are weak. My husband had been wanting to try this place for a while so we stopped in on thursday night about 7 pm. Not busy at all, there were only 2 customers there eating. They serve generous portions and the staff is friendly but the food was bland, not seasoned enough especially for barbecue. My husband ordered the chef salad with sliced beef and sausage and I ordered the cheese burger on jalapeño cheese bread. They give you the little packs of mayo and mustard to add to the burger yourself and if there was any jalapeño or cheese in my bun I certainly didn't taste it. Good brisket, pretty tender, and they have a pretty good BBQ sauce as well. I have been to this location a couple of times now, and wasn't really impressed after either visit. While the meat is decent, it's nothing to brag about. The side dishes they offer aren't anything special either. If you're a decent BBQ joint you have to have some decent sweet tea. This food is amazing. I don't know where to begin. So I ordered a four meat platter to compare their brisket to the brisket house in Pasadena and this place has the brisket best hands down. It's juicy and moist but extremely flavorful. The ribs and sausage are cooked just right but the turkey, my girlfriend hates turkey and she wished she got that instead of double ham on her potato. Their bbq sauce is not too watery but not too spicy, it's just right. And there jalapeño toast....me or my girlfriend are NOT jalapeño eaters but the toast OMG is amazing. It's got the flavor but not the hit and is to die for. Plus the decor is so Texan, if your from out of town or visiting and want authentic Texas food and feel then this is the place. The prize had change but they gave it to us for that price (for both nights we ate there btw). Outstanding customer service and food. Not a run of your meal typical flavored BBQ.
