Woah, I thought as I got off the train, what's happened to Birmingham New Street station!
It now seems to be a very modern and beautiful combination of a train station and a shopping centre, and I'll focus on the shopping centre for this review.
Firstly, it is flooded with natural light, as it has gigantic, space ship like pod shapes on the roof, which let in the daylight. So it's actually a nice place to be in, as it's not horribly lit like most other shopping centres.
It's easy to navigate, as it's circular, based around a central atrium, so you can see what's all around you, and down into the train station below.
The big draw here I imagine is the John Lewis at one end of the centre, There are also plenty other outlets at what I would term the 'high end' of the high street, inlcuding a Mac, L'Occitane, Kiehls, Hobbes, and a Cath Kidston. There's also a Holland & Barrett (very handy for the travelling vegan), and one of my favourite shops, a Tiger.
There's plenty of eating places too - of particular interest to me were a Joe the Juice outside John Lewis (but stupidly shut at breakfast time - whaaat!!), and a Giraffe. Most of the other places seem to be cool looking niche places - tapas, crepes, Pho, noodles, sushi, a specialist Macaroon outlet, and a posh pie shop. They looked good. Also a prosecco bar, and some sort of perfume place - I don't know if you mix your own or what, but it looked intriguing.
I didn't have much time to spend here on this trip, but I could gladly spend a few hours here looking round all the lovely places. Well done Birmingham, on achieving a complete transformation, it really has been very nicely done. read more
