Since Faculty moved into Piccadilly Arcade, I've had many more excuses to visit. The arcades are treasures of the city, providing beautiful spaces for small indie businesses to set up shop and introduce their services to the good people of Birmingham.
This small (but perfectly formed) arcade links New Street to the train station. It has an outdoor store, an opticians, a tailors and some lovely places to buy unusual gifts for special occasions. Of course, it also has the aforementioned Faculty (which serves delicious artisan tea's and coffee) which is a little oasis from the hustle and bustle of New Street itself.
If you haven't ever taken the time to pop in, take a couple of minutes to have a look around. As well as some lovely little shops you also have the mural on the ceiling (which is pretty breathtaking) and the lovely tiled flooring to gawk at. I'm afraid I don't know the history of the arcade, I imagine the building is listed and has been wonderfully preserved.
Piccadilly and Great Western are my favourite shopping arcades in the City. If you want to check out some gorgeous architecture and shop independent, it's a great place to visit. read more
