We arrived a few minutes early along with a couple of other parties who also had 2pm reservations. We were invited to wait at the bar. Well, the bar area is also a museum! With dranks. As we spoke to the kind, beautiful, wonderful and informative lady at the bar (a family member of Mrs. Leah Chase), she'd mentioned that Mr. James Baldwin used to sit in a corner of that very bar and write. I'm like, "that corner...right over there?" Yes, that corner. I had to go sit in Mr. Baldwin's corner. Wooosh! There is something about N'awlins. You can just feel the energy! Anywho, not long after, we were called and escorted to our table. The restaurant is so elegantly decorated. There's artwork all around. It's an experience and a half. Our waitress was great. Informative! She asked if we had any allergies and was very knowledgeable about every thing on the menu. My daughter had the fried chicken and I, the stuffed shrimp. The stuffed shrimp comes with perfectly seasoned potatoes. It was delicious and plentiful. Tasted even better the next day when I heated up the leftovers. I'd also had the yams (exceptional), mac n' cheese (a little too salty but still good), and potato salad (perfect)! I didn't have a drink because I'd just finished a frozen Irish coffee with a shot of butterscotch whisky from Molly's at the Market (yum). It had gone from a full dining room to just us and another table of diners. I see now that the restaurants closes at 3pm on Friday and re-opens at 5:30 for dinner. No one rushed us or told us we'd have to leave. If we didn't get up on our own, they might've let us sit there. The sign also said something about a green wall. I looked left and saw the reception desk far in the back. So I kept walking left because the exit from the path was only to the left. I approached the desk to ask if I needed reservation for lunch about a hour later. I was assured that reservations that day would not be needed. When I approached the same sign in the path an hour later, I noticed on the sign a small arrowhead on the end of the horizontal line. It would be great if the arrowhead could be made larger and the verbiage would say simply "Go left for the hostess." ... On my return to Drago's about one p.m., I asked for a place a bit out-of-the-way. I was seated next to two screaming children. So, without complaint, the host reseated me in a darker part of the restaurant which was perfect for my preferences. My waitress was Ashanti. She was attentive, efficient, and personable. She brought me a half-dozen of charbroiled oysters which were hot and excellent with extra slices of French bread because much of the pleasure from charbroiled oysters is from the butter sauce. (This downtown Drago's might serve more French bread than the Drago's in Metairie.) The oysters were small but I could not complain because Argust is not really a month with an "R" in the name. ... I also had a cup of seafood gumbo (with a good complement of shrimp) as well as a Heineken and a Kim Crawford sauvignon. The gumbo was good, but no New Orleans grandmother need worry whether Drago's had stolen her gumbo recipe. .. The ambiance of this Drago's was good although the rap music was discordant early.
