Friday Night Fish Fry! They do not have it year round…read more Lent only, maybe. This place might be getting a little bit of my River Falls bump, but it is not much of a bump. I have been coming here for years now for the AYCE Friday Night Fish Fry. Think they used to have it during Lent only, but their website says they opened it up in January this year so maybe not just Lent anymore. Met the Fish Fry connoisseur, Brian R, here along with his wife and newborn. A good time was had by all. $14.95 for the AYCE buffet. Four types of fish tonight: baked cod, beer-battered cod, cajun fried walleye and cajun fried tilapia. The only one I didn't care for much was the baked cod. Kind of on the cold side, but I think I grabbed the last couple filets in the tray. The rest was supurb. Like the sides almost as much as the fish. The Mac N Cheese, the baked bean casserole and the wild rice are all standouts. They also have a soup and salad bar, of which I did not partake of this evening, and a dessert bar, of which I did partake. Can never say no to cheesecake - some fruit topping would have been nice, though. They get pretty crowded. Told it would be a 25 minute wait, but ended up being much quicker. If you can, see if you can get seated in the bar area rather than the main dining room. It is a much more relaxed vibe.

They also made me cry the day before my wedding when they came to set up and the church was not set up yet (not my fault; I was just as shocked/dismayed about it). They decided to take it out on me. A lady with two unprofessional looking teen boys with her chewed me out. Nice way to treat a bride the day before her wedding. They also were supposed to serve the sheet cake from the kitchen. I paid something like 1.50 per slice just for this service. For some reason, two ladies hauled the massive sheet cake out to the small table where we were supposed to do the ceremonial cake cutting as a couple and started cutting slices from there. It was ridiculous and inconvenient and we had to ask them to haul the sheet cake back into the kitchen do we could do our cake cutting. Nobody asked for that! The sheet cake barely fit on the table! We only went with them because my parents took us to a tasting and they liked the food. It was unprofessional or at least uncaring service.

In addition, we had a vegetarian (and pregnant) friend we ordered a vegetarian meal for and they didn't bring it for her. Good thing she had bacon mashed potatoes, pork, and chicken as her back up! And she couldn't drink! She rated our wedding 10/10. They also brought us the invoice on our wedding night (unadjusted) and expected to be paid in full! While we were going out on the dance floor for our first dance. We said, "WTF?" The owner called me on Monday and offered $150 off our bill. Are you kidding me?! We are paying thousands of dollars for catering and 1/3 guests didn't have a complete meal. We settled for $400 off, but weren't happy about it. If you want your wedding meal to embarrass you, then pick this place. Pros: The phyllo chicken was tasty.

Absolutely lovely venue for a sweet country style or shabby chic wedding! They had a gorgeous barn decked out with chandeliers and comfortable seating. Lots of extra little modern touches of chalkboards that they had beautiful writing on them for the wedding. The outdoor seating for the actually wedding had nice solid planted benches- not teetering- which is alway my odd fear when having to opt for bench seating. It was a beautiful set up. They had some funky fun pieces too. A giant rooster and the standing tables outside had some fun or nice quotes on them. The quirky, wordie gal in me loves the fun random find of what was written in the tables. They even had a posh 3 bathroom, air conditioning outdoor potty rooms. Both for men and women (no, I resisted checking out the men's but I was dang curious if it was as nice as the ladies side). They also had ample parking, which is always a big appreciation for a city chic like me. My only complaint...it was hella hot in that barn!! For an 80 plus degree day, I would say they are not set up as well as they could be for moving that hot air. Should I EVER decide to marry again, I would totally consider this venue...in a cooler month.

It was absolutely worth the trip. Before the food arrived, I had the chance to chat with the owner, who shared that much of the lumber in the restaurant came from his family's farm. That small conversation told me a lot about the place. It feels authentic, welcoming, and built with care. As someone who loves BBQ, I know competition BBQ and restaurant BBQ are very different. The owner comes from a competition background, and he has clearly mastered the restaurant side. I ordered the turkey melt because turkey is one of the best tests of a smoker. No sauce needed. The smoke was spot on, the avocado balanced it perfectly, and my wife's brisket sandwich was excellent. The surprise star of the meal was the green beans. At a BBQ restaurant, that's not something I expected to say, but our entire group loved them and we're still talking about them. The seating was great for our large group, the prices were fair, and the atmosphere was lively. Most impressive of all, the servers were fantastic from start to finish. Every person in our group enjoyed every bite. We came because of the bacon basket. We'll be back because of everything else.
