I've had the privilege of training at Gracie Barra Encinitas since 2005, and it's truly been one of the most meaningful and consistent parts of my life. Under the guidance of Professors Nelson Monteiro and Rafael Ramos--both world-class instructors and incredible human beings--I've grown not only in my jiu jitsu journey but also as a person. Their leadership has cultivated a culture that is as welcoming and inclusive as it is technical and disciplined. From day one, this academy felt like home. The atmosphere is warm, the community is tight-knit, and the values go far beyond the mats. It's a place where lifelong friendships are made and where everyone, regardless of rank or background, is treated with respect and care. I earned my black belt here 14 years ago, and I still look forward to every training session. That says a lot about the kind of place this is. Gracie Barra Encinitas isn't just an academy--it's a family. read more

I just noticed a review from a recent person suggesting not to take care you kids here. I can say without a doubt, that there is no martial arts school I'd rather bring my kids for self defense, education, discipline and life lessons than Gracie Barra Encinitas. We are in some challenging times right now, and I know I can speak for many other students of this school (adults and kids) when I say this place has been a beacon for the last 18 months. As a dude, dad and husband, I'd be happy to share my experiences as a student at Gracie Barra Encinitas with anyone. Please feel free to PM me. OSS! read more

I can't tell you how much I love this place!!! I am a mom to 3 kids (11,8,6) and all three of my children have been coming here since they were 5 years old. This school is filled with wonderful and talented professors who are teaching my kids some very important skills that I find extremely important to their development. Not only does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teach them self defense but it gives them a level of confidence that is extremely empowering (we have already dealt with playground bullying and thank goodness for BJJ and giving my kids confidence to handle the situation as needed). In addition to the obvious it has taught them respect, discipline, hard work and perseverance. You should see the looks on their faces when they earn their stripes and belts and know that they worked hard to where there are and the motivation they have to continue each and every day. What you may not know is that BJJ is also great for the development of their brains. I've spoken with occupational therapists, child psychologists and family therapists and they all unanimously agree that having them in BJJ is one of the best things I can do for my children. I helps the left and right sides of their brains coordinate, communicate and fire new pathways. The movements of crossing the midline, which is so important for things such as hand dominance (writing), fine motor skills, planning and sequencing and body awareness. I actually started BJJ here at Gracie Barra Encinitas 3 years ago (in an attempt to get my middle child to start) and fell in love with it myself. So now it's a family sport and my kids love to roll with me, we get quality time together on the mats during family class and when I volunteer and help coach the kids classes. Nothing like bonding with the children while they are in a choke hold or being arm barred - they LOVE IT!!! Lastly, I do have to say that I have met so many wonderful families here and my kids and I have made numerous friendships. One of the best things about Gracie Barra Encinitas is the wonderful community they have built. It really is FAMILY to me and I am beyond thankful to have that in our lives!!! read more

Super positive kids program to get your kiddos hooked and excited to train! Kids coaches and professors are great, huge shout out to kaio who's the type of professor you'd be super stoked to have work with your child! Kind, patient, supportive but strives to instill focus. GB is known for kids programs but the people at GBE make it the real deal. read more

I love training here! The instructors are not only highly talented, but they're excellent people.

I joined Gracie Barra Encinitas after taking a woman's self defense class. Never would I have thought I would be taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu let alone loving it and being totally addicted to it. Since starting I have gained way more than personal empowerment, a sense of security, confidence and so much more but I also gained a whole family. Nelson and Raf bring such a commitment and passion to there teaching and studio that it exudes throughout the community that everyone is so helpful. From the moment I walk in I feel welcomed and so excited to train (even those days they are hard to get there, I am so thankful I did). The professors, coaches and staff are nothing short of exceptional making sure you are taken care of. I can't recommend GBE enough to anyone (children, woman and men of all ages) because if your experience is anything like mine it will be invaluable. See you on the mats. read more

Recently I took a trip down to the California Coast and I had the opportunity to stop and check Gracie Barra Encinitas, the access to the club is extremely easy, less than a mile of the Highway 5. I am a Jiu Jitsu practitioner for several years and I couldn't help myself to get amused by this place, starting from the instructors who are top notch and well recognized in the martial arts international community but also by the organization of this school. The mats are very spacious and the gym is spot less clean, there is a seating area for the parents and the atmosphere is super friendly, they have a very well known Kids Program with several kids learning a non violent effectively form of self defense right down from the core of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. However Gracie Barra Encinitas isn't a place for kids only although their Children's program is very popular and vibrant their adult Beginners program is also very popular among guys and girls as a matter of fact one of their instructors is a well qualified female, who's the differential on this place in terms of women instruction. Some of the best BJJ practitioners in the area train at this place among them World and National Champions and they are all super friendly and welcoming, willing to share and to propagate the growth of their group which makes Gracie Barra Encinitas the ultimate Martial Arts facility in the area. I couldn't say enough good things about Gracie Barra Encinitas and I rightly recommend this place to anyone who wants to learn in a family, friendly, safe and clean environment. read more

We enrolled both our kids in Juijitzu at this wonderful place and have been extremely happy with the whole thing. Our son has been training for approximately four years and our daughter two. They have both learned discipline through it and really love the lifelong skills they are learning. As they approach middle school years, they will be equipped with some tools that may help them navigate that journey. Barbara who runs the place is lovely and alway greets the kids with a smile. The instructors, Matt, Victor, Dave and Duane are so great with the kids. We love this place! read more

Best Jiu jitsu school in the world!! Such an amazing community. I feel like I gained a family and have made so many life long friends. They really care about you here. I highly suggest for women!! read more

When two ladies were killed years ago by a mugger on a running trail, I wanted my daughter to learn how to defend herself. So I chose Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since this art uses leverage and not strength to defend yourself with, especially since most fights or women that get attached end up on the ground and Jiu Jitsu is a self defense ground art. My daughter and I joined a couple of years ago. I couldn't be happier. The instructors are fantastic. There is a family atmosphere to their location, which is refreshing to see. My daughter, now 14, has enjoyed every class. She submits boys larger than her on a regular basis, which has really increased her confidence that she can handle herself, god forbid if she was ever attacked. She also enjoys competing in their local competitions. Taking classes at Gracie Barra is the perfect way for you or your children to learn a great self defense art that will build up ones self confidence. read more

A terrific BJJ gym. All instructors are tremendously gifted practioners, all are good teachers, and all are very nice people. Who should train here: 1) middle aged guys and gals looking for a great hobby, workout, and set of new friends. Most folks I trained with here are professionals between 30 and 50. This is great as it removes a lot of the "brute jitsu" tendencies found at MMA gyms. 2) anyone looking to get really REALLY good at gi jiu jitsu. Competition jits, specifically. Who should avoid gb encinitas: 1) folks desiring an MMA experience 2) spaz jitsu fighters that want to beat somebody up (read this as "young guys") 3) folks looking for crossfit. read more

One of the best places I trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so far! Great atmosphere, very clean installations and very knowledgeable and friendly instructors. My husband has been practicing here for years & our 11 year old son has been going for a little over a year! Talk about stellar teachers with such warm inviting spirits & yet truly forces to be reckoned with! Strength in mind & body! I would give GB Encinitas more than 5 stars if I could! My son started jiu jitsu about 2 years ago. We had such a great experience here that we've convinced our two nieces and a bunch of our friends to sign up. That's a true testament of how well GB Encinitas is run. We are so glad we found and chose this place! Professor Matt Smith, Professor Victor Renteria and all the coaches that assist in the class are great teachers who truly care about the kids. I have to specially mention that Professor Matt, the main instructor for the kids class, is a very special teacher. He is one of those who has found his passion, lives it and shares it with his students. Professor Matt uses the perfect balance of kindness and firmness when dealing with kids. If you see him in action--you'll be able to tell that he was born to teach! Professor Victor is also an awesome instructor. It's very hard to find teachers like them! By the way, Barbara is also an amazing part of GB Encinitas--she is so sweet and kind. She helps ease the nervous jitters of everyone who first starts here. She helps make the whole place feel friendly and family oriented. I also have to mention that their style of teaching also follows a growth mindset--where kids learn that each stripe or belt they earn really takes time and effort. The confidence the kids develop is also paired with humility--which is an awesome trait. They know that some days, they'll win and other times they'll learn. By the way, my husband also started jiu jitsu about a year after my son did and he also has a great experience! read more

Gracie Barra Encinitas is top-notch and definitely deserves 5 stars. Master Nelson Monteiro and Professor Rafael Ramos are both grass roots instructors who have dedicated their lives to the teachings of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Whether you are a first-timer on the mats or an experienced BJJ practitioner you will be impressed with the passion and experience GB Encinitas instructors and students share alike. A quality school takes years to establish a solid core of training partners and GB Encinitas has done just that. Hope to see you on the mats, you will not be disappointed! read more

Two of my boys, Van who is 8 and West who is 5, go to this Jiu Jitus practice. Professor Matt and professor Victor are wonderful. They teach them discipline while being caring at the same time. My kids have been studying under Professor Matt for several years and it has been an amazing experience. The teaching is done with discipline, skill, and compassion and the center is run efficiently and with care. As well, the woman's self defense class has been an empowering addition to my workout routine. I learned about this place for a special women's defense class they offered and learned effective tools to protect myself. Amazing kid's classes. Professors are great and the kids are focused, learning, and having fun. Highly recommended.

Life changing. This is your new family. After a year of suggesting my husband try jujitsu, he finally went. He came home with his signup package, a huge smile and never looked back. Three weeks latter my 11 year old daughter was hooked as well. My husband looks forward to class every night. He is always proud of his bumps and bruises. On Saturday they have family class where my husband and daughter get to roll together. The instructors are world class and teach so much more than just martial arts. The kids learn to self control, how to use aggression and how to win and lose with grace. In the long run this will prove far more useful than dance classes. The program is run professionally, facilities are clean and modern. It is the instructors and fellow classmates that will keep you coming back night after night. Give it a try! you will be so glad you did. read more

My son attends Gracie Barra every week and loves it. The instructors are passionate and love their craft, and they keep the kids focused and in line. The beginners classes with professor Brian are amazing, they are great workouts and you learn very quickly (not to mention ridiculously fun). The advanced classes are just as good, with the added bonus of a ton of live training. GB Encinitas is very structured, disciplined, and has top quality teachers. I have gotten 2 of my good friends to join and they both love it also. I trained somewhere else in norcal for 6 months, so I do have something to compare it to, and GB Encinitas definitely takes the cake! My 8 year daughter started jujitsu here 4 months ago. I can't say enough good things about the instructors, the format of the class and the participants themselves. Professor Matt has amazing control over the class. The kids are engaged, get great exercise AND learn self defense techniques! I'm told that this location has the most black belt instructors. Each class I've witnessed has had at least one black belt professor. The most rewarding part for me is seeing the older, bigger or more experienced kids helping the younger, newer ones. I've seen my child on both ends of this, and it's special to watch. Such a supportive environment! I highly recommend it! read more

We've been to a lot of different places but this one will make you feel like you're part of the family. As a newbie to the class, everyone is helpful and willing to teach you. I wanted to learn martial arts since I was 15 years old. 50 years later, I finally got started after talking to a martial arts practitioner from New Jersey who recommended this place I was a little anxious because I've never done anything like it and of course, I had no idea of what to do. The people were as warm, friendly, and welcoming as you can ever find. I enthusiastically signed up after the first class but now realize my body isn't what it used to be. They were gracious and let me cancel the contract. See what I mean? Great people. Great atmosphere. I actually retained some of the things I learned in the first hour. I recommend them highly. Checked out these guys tonight after reading some good reviews on Yelp. Was not disappointed. As soon as I walked up the stairs and stepped in the room (dojo?) I was greeted with smiles and acknowledged from the guys on the mats. Very friendly staff and members. Took a free class. Brian (one of the managers/owners) was very helpful- hooked me up with a gi to train in and spent about 20-30 minutes after the class (last of the day) just chatting with me about their approach and a little of his background. No pressure. Encouraged me to check out other gyms and then get back with him. Price seemed reasonable too. read more
