    Dojo of the Four Winds
    Garrick O.

This place is a real Japanese dojo with an awesome atmosphere. I have been in here to train with my dad off and on for years but he has been a student for 16yrs (goddamn that makes him almost ass bad ass as chuck norris.) Training at the Dojo of the Four Winds includes some really interesting stuff. They train with swords, real Japanese jujutsu, and modern self defense with knives. The people who train here are nice and easy to get along with. Most of the long time students and teachers are professionals and business owners. The dojo is close to the beach, surrounded in bamboo, and has been a hidden martial arts instutution tucked away 20 feet off the 101 for like 20 years. So if you life goal is to challenge chuck Norris to the kumite in blood sport this is where you can train. Real talk though if you are serious about martial arts or want to get serious roll though this spot and start living your life like JCVD.

Very good place to train. The dojo itself is very pleasant - a true healing environment. James Williams sensei is very knowledgeable in all forms of Japanese martial arts and he also teaches tactical military strategies. The weekend self-defense seminars are very useful for all ages. I highly recommend this place if you are interested in swords, self-defense, or just being stronger and smarter while surrounded by awesome people. One of the sayings on the white board in the dojo is - "Your ego is not your amigo."

Although the name nor location stands out much at a glance as a gym for BJJ, it is well known among locals and visitors of their excellence and commitment to expanding the roots of the sport in this area. It's been heard near and far about their ability to bring in top practitioners for seminars and guest visits. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to come in for a couple sessions taught by Eric and his team. With multiple sessions a day, multiple days a week, it was flexible to find a time that worked for me and with people of all levels, it was a great opportunity to learn from some talented folks. They do host gi and no gi sessions so if one's more your cup of tea, consider checking their schedule to determine the best days and times to attend. With a private parking lot, it makes it also convenient to come in at any of their sessions and be able to hop in and out without worrying about finding parking or getting stuck in traffic while trying to navigate the constantly construction-ridden streets of Solana Beach. The first impression walking into Studio 540 was the immaculate training area which included the main area of mats but also the side areas, staging area, and bathroom/showers. Eric and everyone who came in were extremely welcoming and made the session a great learning environment. The training was balanced with warmups, drills, and open rounds and had a good pace to keep bodies warm and flowing. I only wished I had more time to come by more often! Overall, Studio 540 is an exceptional gym for those looking to get into the sport of BJJ as well as for those who are a bit more advanced and looking to level up your game. Their facilities are extremely clean (they expect team members to wipe and sanitize the mats after each session) and well-maintained. Their footprint in the community has quite a reach and brings in folks from afar to come train so you may have the opportunity to meet a great group of people. If you're looking for a gym to call home or simply a visitor interested in keeping up to speed and in shape, give Studio 540 a look!

By the end of the course, I was drenched in a gallon of sweat. I had Andrew the owner as my instructor. We probably had altogether 1 or 2 minutes of water time. All the other minutes were burpees, jumping jacks, push-ups, and one-on-one instructions, and the remaining periods were all on the punching bag. Andrew is friendly and knowledgeable. He'll go around each person offering corrections to ensure you're doing it correctly and lessen the likelihood of injury. He also tailors the workout based on your conditioning, which is nice. The facility is nice and clean, Andrew even showed me a backroom that's like a workout room which is reserved for private lessons. I came in here once and will definitely return. Andrew promised that he'll get me into a summer bod and get rid of this dad bod; so someone will one day love me too!! This is a crazy good workout, you'll definitely feel it the next few days. But I feel the amount of strength and endurance and calorie burning in this class is insane. I'll definitely be back, 5 STARS!!!

From the owner Andrew to the instructors, you get great instruction from great people. If you just want to burn calories or if you want to improve your boxing technique/IQ, they have classes that have you covered. They also do HIIT classes if you want to change it up. This is not your cookie cutter boxing gym, it is a unique boutique boxing experience. I love Kina for technique, Andrew for a kick ass workout, Anthony for real world fighting instruction and Lenzi for an amazing calorie burn. You need to try it:)

SWEET! so my daughter has had a rough time deciding what she wants to do...soccer, baseball, ballet, gymnastics...so...why not get her started in Tae Kwon do??? She agreed to do it on the condition that I do it with her....well, if you know me, i am anything but athletic. To me exercising is going dancing with my friends in Hillcrest, where i probably take in more calories than i burn. But part of being a good Mom is encouraging my children and being a good example, so I agreed to join with my baby girl. Although I feel like a bit of a fool out there...all the 5 years olds are doing better than me...I am so happy (don't tell anyone) that I am working out with Master Church. Master Church and his wife Trish are so incredibly sweet and nurturing. Not only are they like that with all the children, they are treating me...the clumsy adult with the same attention. Thank you guys...it means alot to me =) i really hope my kiddos stick with this forever...and hopefully I get the hang of it soon. oh ya ladies...and it is a really good workout!!!
