As a woman, the thought of trying out Jiu Jitsu was really intimidating because I didn't consider myself a contact-sport type of girl. However, I did want to learn some self-defense so I decided to watch and observe classes first for sometimes before deciding to try myself. Not all Jiu-Jitsu classes and facilities are the same, I decided on trying Gracie Barra (in Deerfield, IL) due to their reputation of "Jiu-Jitsu for everyone", and with their family-oriented environments. GB made my first trial class an enjoyable experience, with really attentive, knowledgeable instructors; an eye opener because it made me realized that I didn't have to be an athlete to do jiu-jitsu and that I actually benefit more from it because I'm not an athlete! 5 years later, and I couldn't be more proud of myself for taking that first trial class. It's cliche but truly life changing; It's empowering and definitely a confidence booster to have the skill sets that Jiu-jitsu have provided me, physically and mentally. The side affect of all the training was the best workout I ever had without feeling like "work"!
I currently train at Gracie Barra in Deerfield and when I heard of another Gracie Barra opening up in one of my favorite place in DT Chicago, west loop, I couldn't be more excited! I heard that Professor Marcio Feitosa will be the head instructor here, I'm very envious of everyone that will get to learn from him. I had the opportunity to attend a seminar from him a few years back in Deerfield and attended one of his class while I was in Brazil at their HQ, he's truly one of the best. Prof. Marcio is widely known in the jiu-jitsu world for a reason because he's outstanding at what he does and even better at teaching it; I can't wait to visit when it's open! read more
