This is not just a Taekwondo school in Franklin Park, Illinois -- it's a community that builds confidence, discipline, respect, and strong character in kids, teens, and adults. Our martial arts program focuses on real skill development: proper Taekwondo technique, physical fitness, goal setting, and leadership training. I've watched students come in shy or unsure and grow into confident, focused leaders both on and off the mat. Parents regularly tell us how much improvement they see in behavior, attention, and self-esteem. What sets ATA Franklin Park apart from other martial arts schools near Chicago is the culture. Kwon's Martial Arts Center

Kwon's Martial Arts Center

Kwon's is an awesome place to start (or continue) your martial arts journey! I went there as a kid…read moreand think it is so cool that now I have two of my own children attending. Recently found out that my dad went during high school as well! 3 generations of my family have now been students. When I attended it was a student of Master Kwon himself, who was at the time the President of the National Taekwondo Association. I eventually moved to a school in Louisiana when my father got a job down there and went to the nearest Taekwondo school to continue learning. Turned out that the instructor there (nearly 1000 miles away) was named Dean Brice and was the Vice-President of the NTA. He stated I was previously at one of the best, if not THE best, schools in the country and that it was an honor for me to have been training under Master Kwon. Master Kwon is still around, but the school is now run by Master So. You are still not going to find a better option anywhere in the area. Master So actually went to a Taekwondo University in Korea! Doesn't get much more real deal than that! They offer classes 6 days a week, multiple times a day. I believe there is even weapons classes (Gum-do possibly???). The cost is flat-rate fee for the month, regardless of how often you attend and super reasonable. Some other parents mentioned that there are schools in the area are that are a bit cheaper, but only offer classes 2-3 times a week. Or complain that the instructors are teenagers or even former students of Kwon's. If you or your family would be attending regularly you will definitely be getting more bang for your buck here considering the quality of instruction from Master So and the price per class when broken down! My kids love it here and are determined to stick with it until they get their black belts. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a good place to learn martial arts, build some discipline, confidence, and skills that can be taken with in life. I attribute a lot of my success in martial arts later on in life to my early start at Kwon's and the rock solid foundation I built for my stand-up. Pretty sure he offers a trial class if you want to try it out before committing too. And lastly, pretty sure I've never seen a class that wasn't at least partly taught by Master So. He teaches almost every class himself, day in and day out. Multiple times a day. Somewhat of a rarity. Most have their higher belts teach for them, but Master So will only have them take over temporarily while working 1 on 1 or helping someone else with something. I find that very impressive! Give this place a shoot if you've been looking or considering something like this for yourself or family.

I can't even tell you how wonderful I felt after this class. The instructors were top notch amazing. I left this class feeling confident and refreshed. I learned some very informative information. Not only does this class teach you about self-defense. It's also a great way for your spiritual being and physical state of mind. Pat & Tobudo Aikido Team are professional and well- trained instructors. I can't wait until my next class.

The instructors are so supportive and don't treat women as fragile flowers who are just there for show. I am treated as an equal and as a "warrior." When we say warrior it's less about the idea of a physical warrior and more about being a mental warrior. We fight within ourselves to believe that we can do something and our classmates are there to make sure we know we can. This school isn't as "pretty" as others nor will you get a black belt in 12 months. However, that just goes to show that they're more concerned about the quality of their teaching. If any dojo tells you you can get a black belt in 12 months or even 2 years you should run away and run straight to Powell's Way of Kenpo. They are serious about their instruction and don't take belt testing lightly. When you get your belt, it's because you worked hard for it by learning and perfecting techniques and not because you've been there for a set amount of time. As for teaching the kids, it couldn't be better. They are patient, calm, and give the kids individual attention. They try to make everyone feel included while also instilling valuable skills such as discipline, focus, and the idea that there are no mistakes just things you need to work on. All of the kids love it there and I think they would stay there all day if they could. Definitely give Powell's Way of Kenpo a try if you or your child are considering martial arts!
