Their communication is terrible. Takes them days/weeks to respond by email. My child could never come home and tell me what he learned. He would literally cry in the morning because he was scared of the head teacher/owner Ms. De Alwis. I ended up pulling him out early and not finishing the year. I did not tell them, just never sent him back. They NEVER called me to see if he was ok, or to try and find out why he he was no longer coming to school. As a school and a teacher, you have the obligation to check on your students and their well being. It is called a welfare check. But nothing from them... They also do not do conferences. When you ask to to set up a conference they act like they are doing you a favor...and when you do get a conference, they could not tell me anything specific about how my child was doing - just that he was doing great...when in reality he was not. When he started there he could write his name really well, but as the year went on, he digressed. They did not correct him or try to help him get back to where he was. It was a very sad and frustrating year. Thankfully, we found a different school that has been just wonderful! Further, we have a friend that also sent their child to Misty Mountain as well. After a year, they decided to take him out as well, and find a different school for him - for many of the same reasons listed above. Overall, very disappointing, sad, and frustrating experience.

My son knows more countries than I knew at the end of elementary school, has studied the foods and cultures around the world, learns the science of trees, plants, animals, and more, and is so ahead in math and reading (close to 2nd grade level) that kindergarten is going to be pretty boring for him next year. They also learn about famous artists and music composers and work on practical life skills. At this school, your child learns at their pace with lots of fabulous learning tools, and there is no limit to what they can do. They work independently, with the teacher, and in small groups. The classroom is multi-age, allowing for the youngest kids to learn from the oldest, and the oldest to learn kindness and compassion while helping the younger children. Karen understands the importance of play and creativity for young children, while at the same time never underestimating how much they can learn and how eager they are to acquire knowledge.

Unfortunately, our experience after enrollment raised concerns for me regarding staff training, classroom management, communication with parents, and the unenrollment process. My son had recently experienced an abrupt transition from a daycare he loved, and he had only been enrolled for a couple of weeks when his teacher pulled me aside at pickup and said, "He was doing a phenomenal job listening the first week or so, and now he's just not listening. Is there something going on at home?" I was surprised that the first explanation offered was something happening outside of school rather than examining what might be contributing to the behavior within the classroom environment. At the time, my son had no history of behavioral issues, and I believed he was still adjusting to a major transition. I also suspected he may have been under-stimulated. I suggested that when he appeared disengaged, he might benefit from being redirected toward a task or activity. Compounding my concern was the fact that another child had repeatedly been aggressive toward my son, including incidents of physical hitting. We brought these concerns to the school's attention, but the behavior continued, leaving me feeling that the situation was not being adequately monitored or addressed. After discussing the situation with educators from other preschool programs, I learned that many early childhood professionals first evaluate classroom dynamics, developmental needs, peer interactions, and environmental factors before assuming challenges originate at home. That perspective aligned more closely with my own understanding of child development. Ultimately, I decided not to keep my son enrolled through kindergarten and informed the school of my decision. What followed was the most disappointing part of the experience. Shortly after notifying the school, I received multiple calls encouraging me to keep my child enrolled. During one conversation, I was told that withdrawing him could result in being responsible for 20% of future kindergarten tuition because staffing decisions had already been made. When I expressed surprise, I was told, "This is a business, and we hired accordingly." While I understand that schools must plan financially, the conversation felt focused on retaining revenue rather than understanding the concerns that led to our decision. For an organization that places a strong emphasis on faith and community, I left feeling that financial considerations were prioritized over family experience. Every family's experience will be different, but ours ultimately left us feeling unheard. We are confident there are many excellent educational options available, and we are grateful to have found a different path for our son.

I can honestly say this school has been one of the biggest blessings for our family. The progress my daughter has made in reading, writing, confidence, and communication has been incredible. What stands out the most to me is how much the school truly focuses not only on the children, but also on the families. Even though there are several students in each classroom, the organization, education, and individual attention given to every child is phenomenal. The teachers and staff genuinely listen to the needs of each student and family, and that level of care is something very special and rare to find. As a mother who previously had a very negative experience with another school with my older child, finding Discovery completely changed my perspective and restored my trust in what a school community should feel like. Unfortunately, when I moved to this area, my older son was already too old to attend this school, and I truly wish he could have experienced the same environment my daughter has had here. One of the things I appreciate most is how they work hard to keep children active and involved, especially for families who may not have the resources for expensive extracurricular activities. The after-school activities, family events, flag football, choir practice, singing activities, and the way they bring families together create such a beautiful sense of community. But this one-day-a-week school really changed the way I am as a parent. This is my second year at the co-op, since I signed up my 1 year old. My daughter's love the sensory table-it changes often; cornmeal, rice, dry pasta, water, potato flakes, lentils, oatmeal, and more. The toys around the classroom are constantly rotated and every single toy has a specific purpose-nothing was picked up from Toys-R-Us because it looked pretty or was on sale. There is a lot of thought behind every detail. What motor skills are they using and what are they learning. The teachers are so lovely and sweet. The epitome of preschool teachers, seriously. I liked having the parent educators, because I constantly had questions about how to handle my rambunctious daughter. Parents don't go and simply sit and chat, but are led in discussions with your child and their age in mind, so it's all directed towards you being able to apply it now. This isn't a traditional sit-down-and-learn-letters sort of preschool. Midland really emphasizes the importance of play. As a parent, you learn the importance of play too, and how much children are actually learning while playing, which I was completely unaware of. My only regret is not starting this program with my first daughter when she was 1 years old.

Midland follows a fairly similar schedule. Free play time to start, then the parents go and have their 'education' while the kids and the teacher play and work on activities. After this it is time to clean up and have a snack. Finally there circle time for songs. This is a wonderful space and with such caring and attention by the teachers and staff, it really feels great knowing there are places like this out there. As a parent however, there are expectations that you help out during the classrooms and on various boards and committees. Cooperatives offer a less costly alternative compared to non-cooperative pre schools where the costs are higher, but there is less parent involvement.
