This one is, by far, my favorite--he has been seen, included, & loved from day 1. He enrolled as a McKinney-Vento student last year while we were blessed enough to figure out a temporary housing situation. His school has a rating of 2/10 on the main school review websites. It is a Title I school with majority low income families, 78% of students being non-white, and almost 20% of students having IEPs or 504 plans. All students qualify for free/reduced lunch & are sent home on Fridays with a packed bag of weekend meals. The curriculum and day-to-day has been full of color, curiosity, and neurodivergent-friendly practices. He hasn't encountered any weirdness around having queer parents at this school & this is the first place we haven't had to educate his educators on alternatives to addressing parent labels, family tree assignments, father's day art, and the like. They talk about consent and non-violence and mutual respect and pronouns and gender diversity and make space for cultural celebration. Just a friendly reminder that school ratings systems are racist, classist, & ableist. Grateful for the universe leading us exactly where we needed to be & grateful for the educators who show up despite the limited tools they have to work with and make. it. happen. I was looking for a play-based…read moreprogram that focused more on social and emotional development through play and less on the memorize and repeat. But don't get me wrong, there's plenty of teaching and learning that happens. My daughter who's in pre-k this year has a theme each week (like a country, the weather, shapes, or historical figures) and comes home with facts she's learned and art projects. Plus, the kids have weekly Japanese class, ballet once a month, yoga, and an outdoor playground they can use daily. My husband and I really enjoy reading the weekly classroom updates we get from the program director via email. She'll detail what they learned and give a heads up to what's coming the next week. Sometimes there's a special activity for the holidays or a pj day. Our daughter has been going to the school for 2 years now, and this year we enrolled our younger son too in their sprouts class. The sprouts program isn't as enriching as the older kid classes so I can see where the other reviewer might be coming from, but I feel that it's also more of a school environment intro. My son who's 2 only goes two mornings a week and is working on his listening skills, following directions and sharing. He's learned lots of songs, enjoys the crafts as well, and gives me fun stories of who was a good boy or bad boy that day. His clean up and taking turns skills have greatly improved. And price wise, the program is very comparable to all the other preschools we looked at. Overall we feel very lucky to have found Little Friends!

After a thorough search and…read moreinterviewing multiple preschools for our 3 yr old son, we delightfully chose Little Friends because of its warm and colorful environment, its wonderful and nurturing teachers and its curriculum. The school is nestled in the middle of Queen Anne Avenue in the charming brick Presbyterian Church. The school rents the classrooms from the church but is not affiliated with the church. The building provides a lovely first school experience for children and is safe, secured, clean and comfortable. The classrooms are endearing, fun, and provide a great and creative space for the children to engage with each other and to play on their own. There is also an outside area for daily recess. The teachers (Debbie, Becca, Kari, Barb and Rosemary among others) are kind, knowledgeable and all trained in early education childhood education. They are all loving, helpful and really take the time to get to know all of the children and their families. Our son spent two years at LF, one in the 3/4 program as a young 3, and the following in their pre-k for 4/5's, again being the youngest. He is now at another pre-k housed in the elementary where he will be going to in the fall and still talks and remembers how fun LF school was and how nice and loving the teachers are. He is still friends with his buddies from LF. At Little Friends, the teachers believe and follow through with the fact that play is children's work. So although LF is play based, the children learn through their play-be it learning the alphabet, a song to learn the seasons, or giving back to the community through an annual giving tree and other special art projects and giving projects throughout the year. They also have two performances during the school year where the children learn songs and perform for their families. The one aspect that helped our family the most was having LF encourage us to give our son the "gift of time" and wait to start kindergarten. Since our son was one of the youngest at LF, we headed their advice and decided to wait to enroll our son in kindergarten. It has been the best decision for him and our family. He is now a confident, thriving pre-k kid ready to start kindergarten in the fall. We thank LF from the bottom of our heart for their wisdom and loving approach to early childhood education. They are the best on Queen Anne!

Traditional school + tutoring was unable to teach him to read, especially because he was stubbornly against learning to read. Homeschooling with him was frankly a disaster. I'm very tenacious and resilient normally, but his stubbornness just kept defeating my efforts. Morningside is pricy, but in our extreme case we needed real help. My son is now reading and the relief is hard to convey. He's still behind his grade level, but showing truly amazing progress. Thank you Morningside!

I don't often write a review, but after reading the previous review of Nikki, I felt I had to write…read morethis. Let's be real, people. Nikki did the responsible thing and called the school. The school listened and said they would take action. End of story. From reading the review, Nikki knows absolutely nothing about this wonderful school. My daughter came from a school that failed to teach her to read, and blamed the problem all on her. My daughter is thriving at Morningside, and is now a reader. No, the problem was not with her, it was with her old school. Morningside did what seemed impossible last year - they accepted a kid who was struggling to read in the sixth grade, and have turned her into a seventh grader reading above grade level and thriving in all her other subjects. Last year she felt like a failure, and that was backed up by the school she attended. This year, she is feeling like a success, and dreaming big of one day becoming a vet. I've heard story after story of success stories at Morningside. Before enrolling my daughter at Morningside, I knew of one boy that came out of her previous school reading at 3rd grade level in 6th grade, and is now in a Seattle Public high school with a B+ average. I also spoke with many extremely satisfied parents before enrolling my daughter. Morningside is dedicated to helping their students to reach their full potential, then sending them on their way when they are ready. The teachers are first rate, know their students inside and out, and the school supports the kids 100% academically and socially. One bad review from someone who knows nothing about the school should not dissuade prospective parents. I was in tears at our first Morningside parent/teacher conference when I heard my daughter was now reading above grade level. Not only that, she's met a great group of friends. That's just our family's story. There is hope and help out there for struggling kids, and Morningside is a superb choice.
