    Side salads with wiener schnitzel
    Della S.

I was blown away by this place. I came here for dinner with 3 other friends after having eaten a huge lunch together, so we decided to order lightly because we weren't that hungry. After tasting the food, I ended up devouring it anyway because it was so tasty! I'll mention that one of my friends grew up eating a lot of home-cooked German food so there were some dishes that she thought were executed differently than what she was used to. However, as an ignorant coastal American who doesn't encounter much Austrian and Central European food on a regular basis, I loved this place! We started with the four hausbrot ($10) and kürbisrisotto ($16). The breads were quite dense and paired well with the butter and quark spreads. We loved the risotto, which had a very earthy flavor from the squash and brie cheese. The sage was a really nice touch that added more herby flavors to the dish. For our mains, we split the wiener schnitzel ($24) and sauerbraten ($27). Both dishes were so good and great for sharing. I often start to feel overwhelmed when a deep-fried dish is too greasy, but the wiener schnitzel never felt heavy. The breading was crispy and well-seasoned. The side salads were refreshing and added a lot of variety to the dish. I enjoyed the contrast between the cold, creamy salads and the hot, crispy schnitzel. I loved the red cabbage in the sauerbraten so much that I've since tried to make my own at home, but I'm still working on perfecting my recipe. The savory beef complemented the spices, sweetness, and mild tartness in the cabbage, and the spätzle was the perfect carby vehicle to soak up all the sauces. I wish we got to try some of the pastries/dessert but we were too full! I'll have to come back another time to try them.

Brie was an excellent server!! Please ask for her. Wow! She was so nice and patient in explaining all the Austrian words, food, and flavors. We had a 5:30 reservation and arrived a few minutes early and were seated immediately by the fantastic and competent hostesses. We decided to have the soup of the day which was potato. It was not like American potato soup that is so heavy and creamy and fattening. This was a lovely light potato broth soup with lots of garlic and some celery. I thought the bowl was actually a little too big, even when my wife and I were sharing. So next time I will get a cup. We got the bread basket, which we were enamored with. I found a pit in the olive bread, but I guess that's to be expected. The whipped butter with paprika was nice as was the cream cheese type spread. We shared the Hungarian goulash for dinner, which Brie was nice enough to split for us on two separate plates. I would like to come back and try the pork shank on a Wednesday night. The atmosphere is dark wood and brick. The tables are far enough apart that you don't feel like you're on top of each other. I can see why Grünauer he is one of the top 5 restaurants on OpenTable in KC. Delish!!

Stopped by for another Austrian bite to eat after watching Raiders of the Lost Ark at the Kauffman. The food is delicious! I opted for something I cannot pronounce, but turns out it was smoked pork belly, a wurst sausage, and a great ham steak. Add in a cocktail and the dark wood paneling. Gives a great place to sit and unwind over a long dinner. The waitstaff was, as always, playful and kind, while still keeping a level of sophistication. I already can't wait to go back. The only downside here is the expense. Though it is a fairly good value, it is not a GREAT value. And it loses a star for being a luxury-only restaurant.

Made a last minute reservation for an early date night. So happy they were able to get us right in upon request. I've eaten here a few times, but my husband had not. This restaurant is absolutely romantic with its cozy atmosphere, especially with the Christmas tree and lights added in. Service was prompt, but a little pushy. We did have to ask for salt and pepper. I couldn't tell if she hadn't been a server long or had served for too long. When you have to upsell your own ticket, shows a bit of disconnect. Can we order drinks? Absolutely. Can we have some bread with our meal? Absolutely. The food was delicious and served quickly. The husband ordered the Beef Goulash and I ordered the Rainbow Trout (I have no idea who am I anymore), with the creamed spinach, which was everything I hoped it would be. We both cleared our plates. Would definitely visit here again. A great overall experience.

One thing I like about Restaurant Week is finding new places to eat. Grunauer is a case in point. I was impressed with the decor and atmosphere. The food was very delicious and the service was excellent. Our server was friendly and informative. We started our meal with a wonderful Cheese tartlet topped with a smoked salmon salad. I then chose the Raukensalat, followed by the Bohnischer Sahnebraten ( braised beef shoulder). Dessert was a Mohnkoch, poppyseed souffle. While full, I found that I wanted more just because everything was so good. I guess I'll have to return sometime, which won't be a bad thing.

As part of restaurant week I went with a group to Grünauer In the Kansas City West bottoms. Unlike a lot of downtown establishments, there is ample parking in this area. I started out with a Der Schmutzige which is a drink infused with kraut and beet juice with pepper vodka and it was fantastic. It was like drinking an upscale jolly rancher is the only way I can describe it. I also had a Golden Kolsch beer with my meal. For restaurant week they had a 3-course menu and I got the following items. The first course was soup and I got a parmesan semolina cream soup (I'm not going to try and type the actual name but it was a nice velvety chicken base soup. The second course was a beer braised pork chop with mashed potatoes and shaved brussels sprouts. The mashed potatoes were great but the demi-glaze on the pork chop was a little on the salty side and A couple other people who got the same thing agreed. The third course I got was a poppy seed souffle with with lemon anglaise. This wasn't my favorite, But I'm a sucker for trying new food. The souffle was poppy seed Forward but it was kind of a weird texture and had a lot of warm spices like nutmeg and cinnamon that seemed to clash on my taste buds. The The hostess and wait staff were really nice and the ambiance of the restaurant is really good, The plating of the food was very elegant and the location is great but The food was a bit hit and miss.

I really enjoyed our visit to Grünauer! I'm from out of town and heard great things. I came with 2 locals who had highly regarded this spot so I was definitely looking foreword to it. It isn't often that I enjoy Austrian/ Centeal European cuisine so I was looking forward to it. We started with the rosenkohlsalat and I think that was my favorite thing! The shaved Brussels were amazing in the creamy maple dressing. I would definitely order it again. For my entree I ordered the Wiener schnitzel with the pork. The serving was massive! Cooked perfectly and had a great crispy flavor. It was served with potato salad and cucumber salad. I'm not a huge fan of warm potato salad, but if you are this will definitely be your jam. Our server was great and attentive. I enjoyed it here!

A standard staple in the Crossroads district this Austrian fare restaurant is a consistent deliverer of quality service and food. Our server Madison was attentive without being intrusive. Our food was delivered promptly. The servings are generous and they offer daily specials. The decor gives an old world vibe of casual elegance.

I got the wiener schnitzel. It was alright. Undoubtedly good quality meat and I enjoyed the potato salad and cucumber salad that came along with it. The schnitzel could have used more seasoning though, I found it a little bland. What really brought down my experience though was the small portion size I got (see photo). Me and another guy sitting at the bar ordered the exact same dish and his came out with a schnitzel twice the size of mine! I'm aware that sizes of meat cuts can vary but seeing a major difference side by side annoyed me. The other guy's was so big that he didn't end up finishing it, while I finished mine and still felt a little hungry. Not worth it to me.

My friend knew I liked beer and so brought me to Grunauer specifically because he knew I'd enjoy the beer here. Since we had eaten already it was beer o'clock and we walked up to the bar, which not as grand as the main dining room was still impressive in its own way: clean and neat but still dim enough to still have that bar atmosphere. Despite being an Austrian bar the beer list was a little less focused, not necessarily a bad thing, appreciated the beers from Central Europe but I did focus on one of their beers from Stiegl, which is from Austria. I also tried a sour beer from Prairie and after mentioning how it wasn't to my liking, the bartender suggested a beer and was the best beer I had there. I appreciate when the guys aren't just there but actually have an opinion and have a stake in what they serve.

Love love love Grünauer! Went for my grandfather's bday - food was amazing as always, service better than last time, and Christmas decor a major bonus. Our server was attentive despite it being a busy night - food and drinks came out quick. Started with two apps (bratwurst and cabbage) and the bread basket. The cabbage was a huge hit (I thought the pickled mushrooms were the best part lols). Rainbow trout was perfectly seasoned and seared, tho maybe a little too oily. Wish the sides weren't so heavy, but I feel like they'd be chill about swapping them out. They brought out an apple strudel as a desert for my grandpa's birthday, which we really appreciated. The torte was a winner too (again).

Birthday dinner alert! I'd advise y'all to make a reservation if you're planning to check out Grünauer! Beautiful red brick wall ambiance with tables for both couples and large groups. For vegetarians: they don't have a vegetarian soups but don't worry they do have some entree and starter options. We ordered Hungarian beef Gulasch and Schwammerl Gulasch along with Red cabbage. Red cabbage was okay but we really loved Beef Gulasch and Schwammerl Gulasch. Hungarian beef Gulasch: Beef was so tender and the spicy paprika sauce served hot - perfect for the cold breezy night served with spatzle. Schwammerl Gulasch: mushroom Gulasch was so creamy served with a bread dumpling. Suprise of the night was Schokokuchen (Hazelnut chocolate soufflé) - You gotta try this!!! Our server Megan helped us with dessert and entrees selection.

A truly decorated German beer hall. The food was authentic and delicious. I do wish some of the items on the menu were notated as vegetarian friendly due to being with a group of people it would've been more helpful than having to ask the staff. Would highly recommend this place to someone while in the area.

    Is there a kids menu?

I'm not sure. You could always order a plain schnitzel for a child and I'm sure they'd like it, but this also isn't the most small child friendly place. I'd bring my kids for an early dinner but don't expect a provided coloring page, or souped up… Read more

Whats the dress code or accept attire for this place?

At lunch, I saw everything from super casual (t-shirts and shorts) to business casual. For dinner, it seemed a bit more upscale, but not formal.

Is this place child friendly? I have a well mannered and well behaved 8 year old.

I have been bringing my daughter since she was 6 yrs old and never had any issues.

I had never even heard of Besos y Abrazos but saw that it was very close by and an easy streetcar ride away to Power and Light so, I thought why not? And boy am I glad I took a leap of faith. I was the first person in the restaurant a little past 11am and I came hungry and left very happy. The first thing I had to do was order a before noon cocktail because why not? I have free will. I was torn between the refreshing sangria and the bold booze forward old fashioned so, I went with the old fashioned because if you're going to do it- do it big! The old fashioned here is smoked and made with tequila not whiskey so, it had a different flavor profile. I enjoyed it but I think it would have been even better made with mezcal to further pull out the smoky notes but, I would order it again. Then came my first course, whenever I see shishito peppers on a menu I'm a simple girl I order them. These were delicious, the tangy tajin was plentiful and took them up a notch. These are tied with my favorite shishito peppers I've ever had (the other being at Blue Sushi right across the street). I can't wait to come back and snack on these. Once again, I was happily surprised when I spied octopus in the main entree section because, this is one of my go to proteins to order. If it's not done right it's dismal. This was done flawlessly. The octopus was tender and could be cut with ease, it wasn't rubbery at all and tasted fresh. The polenta added a creamy element and the entire dish was colorful and well composed. I would consider it a must order if you're an adventurous eater. Dessert was also tasty especially since it was dairy free...dairy does tend to upset my tummy so, I gladly gobbled this up. The presentation was class and fun, a parfait in a large cocktail glass- I love! These textures all worked wonderfully together and each bite had something smooth and crunchy and nutty. All in all this meal was a 10/10 I can't wait to go back with my mom and try their brunch because I think she would love the colorful Spanish vibes of this restaurant. What a great addition to Power and Light District Kisses Indeed Mwah!

When we arrived, the hostess was not very friendly and seemed like she did not want to be there. That waitress walked by us without acknowledging us at all, so I asked the hostess if there was only one waitress working because I wanted to make sure we were not being overlooked. The hostess said she was both seating and waitressing, then walked off. She later brought us waters but did not take our drink order or check in with us. After continuing to wait, we decided to leave and went next door instead, where we had a much better experience. It was a really disappointing Mother's Day outing, especially because we had been looking forward to trying this restaurant. Unfortunately, the lack of friendliness, communication, and service made us feel ignored and unwelcome. I do not recommend this restaurant, and we will not be going back.

The food came out piping hot and with the right amount of flavor. The chicken fingers had a great flavor, which complimented well with the honey Dijon mustard.
