Kentucky Governor William Goebel is the only Governor to be assassinated while in office in the U.S. He was shot in front of the Old State Capitol building in Frankfort on January 30, 1900, shortly after a hottly contested election. He died four days later at the age of 44.
This bronze statue commemorates his life. The works was completed by the famous American artist, Charles Henry Niehavs.
The stone base of the sculpture lists Goebel's political service and accomplishments. He served as a State Senator for 14 years and was an advocate for the common people.
His final words are engraved on the base. "Tell my friends to be brave and fearless and loyal to the great common people.
