My husband and I thought we would see if there were any tours available and there was nothing scheduled. Basically when you arrive some one will immediately take you on Tour which was nice. Tour Guide was very lovely and was very knowledgeable. I fell inlove with the ornate plaster moldings and medallions. The Oval Staircase is 1 of 2 in the US and is an amazing experience to go down from the top! 99% of all the Gorgeous Antiques are not original to the house owners, but are Extremely Fine rare pieces found in Museums and high end Galleries. Ward Hall is privately run and is in great need of donations for its Upkeep. It's still one of the Most Beautiful Mansions I've ever visited and I highly recommend touring. Regularly scheduled public tours of the mansion are available Tuesdays and Thursday from 9 to 11am we were there on a Friday so was not able to go inside. The mansion officially opened with a large party on January 20, 1914, 96 yrs ago tomorrow. The mansion has 25 rooms, including 2 dining rooms, a grand ballroom, a commercial size kitchen, sunroom, and private living quarters for the Governor and his family The mansion is 80 ft wide and 200 ft long. Made of brick covered by limestone to match the Capitol building. Put on National Register of Historical Places in 1972. The first Governor's mansion is located downtown and built in 1798. There is a formal garden with fountain, very BEAUTIFUL in the spring and summer...definitely going back then to check it out. The current mansion took 2 yrs to build and cost $75,000 to build. Governor James B McCreary and his family were the first to live there. He was the 27th and 37th Governor of Kentucky. It is a tradition when the new Governor and family moves in to the home, they are greeted with a country ham, biscuits and a white cake...thus is a traditional meal for decades. The mansion was inspired with French influences by architect CC and EA Weber. Inspired the French chateaux, Petit Trianon, located at Versailles created by King Louis XV for his mistress, and later given to Queen Marie Antoinette by King Louis XVI.

This is the Kentucky Floral Clock, dedicated May 1961 by Governor Bert T. Combs and constructed as…read morea joint project between the state government and the Garden Club of Kentucky. The word "Kentucky" is spelled out around the top of the clock and "TEAM" across the bottom. It is suspended above a pool of water that has a few coins in it (and one more from me). Some facts: The face measures 34 feet across The tilt is 26 degrees The minute hand is 20 feet long and the hour hand is 15 feet long The face is composed of more than 10,000 flowers All of the flowers used in the clock face are grown in greenhouses nearby that are owned by the state. The coins collected fund scholarships for the University of Kentucky. If you're visiting the capitol, it's worth checking this out. It's not crowded and there's a small parking lot literally next to it so you don't have to look for street parking. The annoying part is that for photos, if you want the "Paris, Kentucky" label in the photo, there's going to be a giant advertisement on the wall behind it, regardless from which angle you take the picture

We loved our visit to the Old State Capital of Kentucky. The Greek Revival building is stately with…read morea colonial touch. The building served as the State Capitol from 1830-1910 and was the third building to hold the honor. (The prior two buildings were destroyed by fire.) This building, designed by Gideon Shryock, was mostly built using Kentucky limestone from nearby Kentucky river. The facade is unusual in that there are no windows at the front entrance, only a huge door. The front is adorned with massive columns. We entered on the side. $8 tickets gave us access to the building plus two other museums. A walking tour with paper guide is available if you want to wander at your own pace. A guided tour is available in the afternoons. The beautiful central spiral limestone staircase and ornate dome are the focal points of the building. On the main floor, is a renovated version of the State Library, completed with period books and furnishings of the 1850's. A meeting room on the ground floor, tells the governing history of Kentucky in photos. The main floor also housed the courts, but those rooms are currently closed to the public. Upstairs are two large room that housed the legislative branches of the state government. The rooms are in the process of renovation and hold some of the original furnishings. Outside on the Square, is a statue of William Goebel, the only Governor in the U.S. to be assassinated while in office. Goebel was shot outside the courthouse in 1900. Ramps and elevators are available inside, as well as restrooms. We found free street parking about a block away. I recommend a visit.

This Greek Revival…read morestyle building features a unique self-supporting staircase and was the only pro-Union State Capitol occupied briefly by the Confederate Army during the Civil War. We only took photos of the exterior of the building as we had time constraints. It's a beautiful building on nicely landscaped lawns. The neighborhood is also interesting with museums and shops. Note, however, that many attractions and shops are closed on Mondays.

The marker reads, "First Kentucky town established by a railroad. In 1831, Lexington and Ohio Railroad Co. began railroad between Lexington and Frankfort and first train reached midway point, 1833. John Francisco farm bought by L&O in 1835; town of Midway laid out by R. C. Hewitt, civil engineer for railroad. Many streets named for L&O officials. Midway incorporated, 1846, by Ky. legislature." The marker is on two sides and reads, "Built by Louisville & Nashville R.R., 1908, to replace depot located here by Lexington & Frankfort R.R. in 1850s. Present station was used by Chesapeake & Ohio, Louisville & Nashville, Frankfort & Cincinnati, and Kentucky Highlands. The last scheduled passenger train was C&O George Washington, April 30, 1971. Presented by Ky. Assoc. of Highway Contractors." And on the opposite, "Early Tunnel in Kentucky - Early transportation tunnel in Kentucky. It was hand bored by Lexington and Frankfort Railroad in 1849. First passenger train went through on February 23, 1850. Replaced incline, built 1835 just east of here, previously used by railroad to enter Frankfort. Incline built by Lexington & Ohio, the first railroad in Kentucky. Presented by CSX Transportation." Kentucky Governor William Goebel is the only Governor to be assassinated while in office in the…read moreU.S. He was shot in front of the Old State Capitol building in Frankfort on January 30, 1900, shortly after a hottly contested election. He died four days later at the age of 44. This bronze statue commemorates his life. The works was completed by the famous American artist, Charles Henry Niehavs. The stone base of the sculpture lists Goebel's political service and accomplishments. He served as a State Senator for 14 years and was an advocate for the common people. His final words are engraved on the base. "Tell my friends to be brave and fearless and loyal to the great common people. There is nearby free street parking.
