    Gourmet Burger Burgers

Oh bloody hell, there's Yelp in the UK now! And the first thing I could do is search for the best lamb burger I've ever had. Yes, it was at GBK (Gourmet Burger Kitchen) in the UK in August of 2007 at this very location! Ever since I've been searching for a comparable burger here in the states to no avail. I'm welcome to suggestions. I still remember how this all went down, and yes I even have pics of the burgers. I've loaded them. I went to England last fall to wander around and relax. I also made it to Paris for a few days by myself. I was lucky to have two cousins who showed me around England. On this particular day we were on our way to the Roman Baths, and they decided to stop by GBK. Even though it's a chain they raved about the quality of the burgers as well as the variety. I remember a huge board of options, but only remember the three we got (reference pics): - Sausage Burger - Speaks for itself. Meaty heaven with bacon. - Linguica Burger - The spicy sausage with cheese topped with arugula. - Greek Lamb Burger - Fresh ground lamb, hummus, cucumber raita (yogurt sauce), chili sauce, lettuce, tomato, red onion. The Greek Lamb Burger had great lamb flavor without being too gamey. It was accompanied well by the raita (yogurt sauce) which sealed it's Greek flavor. When accented with the chili sauce and fresh vegetables it tasted so much like a gyro, but it was a hearty American style burger. And yes, all of this in the UK. Go figure. Cheers!

Whenever I tell people that I'm a vegetarian they give me the same 'you're going to be a nightmare to eat out with' expression. On the contrary, I'm incredibly easy to please - as long as there's one option on the menu, I'm a happy bunny. But I must admit, when someone suggested going to the Gourmet Burger Kitchen for lunch, I died a little inside. As we were handed the menus I thought 'one salad, no frills for me please!' Oh how naive I was. With a selection of five vegetarian burgers alone I was in veggie heaven. When my veggie and camembert dish arrived, my friends mouths watered and a wave of jealously swept over them. Delicious and different - GBK is now a firm favourite of mine.

Sat halfway up Park Street, Gourmet Burger Kitchen does exactly what it says on the tin. They may be a little more expensive (about £7-£8) than your average pub effort, but these are some quite impressive creations. The menu is simple. Pick a burger, any burger (well, within reason), then decide if you want chips with it. Or a beer. This isn't to disparage the place, as: a) To criticise somewhere called Gourmet Burger Kitchen for selling burger would be a bit foolish; and b) the burgers are really, really nice. I've been a couple of times and the blue cheese and chorizo creations are the best, while the falafel burger is great for veggies and non-veggies alike. The only (minor) criticisms are that the chips are a bit weedy, and the system where you queue up to pay at the end at a till (at these prices you want to be treated like you're in a restaurant, not a McDonald's).

How did I live before GBK?? I honestly don't know the answer! I have never tasted a burger as good as the Satay Chicken that they serve here. Piled high on your plate with such a massive breast of chicken with the most delicious peanut sauce and some relish too...mmmmm perfection. Some complain because they don't include chips in the price, however there is no way I could finish off these burgers and have enough room for chips too. They do cost a bit, but they regularly do 2-4-1 deals therefore if you split the price you are looking at £4 maximum for a burger - that's cheaper than Macci-D's!

Pesto mozzarella chicken burger. So good!

Gourmet Burger Kitchen knows what they're doing! I had the pesto chicken burger, the baked goat cheese salad, and ginger fizz to drink. Loved it all.

This is part of a chain, but as the name might suggest, not your typical fast food burger joint. The burgers here are done with a lot of flair, a touch of care and are plenty BIG. A little too big perhaps. But if you love burgers of all sorts then this place is a must. They have a wide selection of different burgers to choose from (about 30 from what I remember) and some of them are slightly alternatively and experimental. The Kiwi Burger certainly comes into this category, with a filling of beetroot, egg, pineapple, cheese and salad, it's certainly different to what you might find in McDonalds or Burger King. A mate of mine had it a few weeks ago and he gave it the double thumbs up. Only criticism I have of the place are the prices. The burgers themselves come in around £6 or £7, but they don't come with fries. You have to order them separately, which I find slightly annoying. Plus the alcohol is pretty limited and very, very expensive. The cheapest beer is a small bottle of Becks, which at £3.30, quite scandalous.

Before you think burger bar - urgh! This is the fine dining version of McDonalds and Burger King and boy does it work - who would have thought?!. The place is always packed, abuzz with burger connoisseurs young, middle and old alike. The menu has a great selection of burgers, pretty much anything you could think of concocting - including a few delicious veggie options. There are salads too and the chunky chips a must - I always order an indulgent dip to go with (be careful of the garlic one - it must contain at least your RDA x 1000!). We sat around waiting to be served clearly missing the sign that saying, go up to till to order and pay...and then just chat, look out the window onto the park street passers-by and wait for your 15cm high burger to arrive.

Tucked away almost out of site on Silver Street and pretty much inside the Old Fire Station is, The Kitchen. A social enterprise and seriously cool little cafe/restaurant run by the YMCA Bristol. I walked passed it earlier and with their big red doors open and most of the tables inside filled, it looked too curious not to give it a shot. And boy I'm glad I did! The staff were so lovely and I instantly found myself having a conversation and banter with them while ordering my food. I asked for their food recommendation and they said the Kitchen Burger. Oh, go on then! I added chorizo and cheese to see what all the fuss was about. Seriously this is one of the best burgers I've ever had. Really juicy and slightly pink, but not too pink in the middle. The chorizo was thick enough to be really tasty and not so cooked that it was chewy. The sesame bun was also perfect for me. I'm not a huge fan of a sweet bun and this was quite dense and felt like a manly burger! The chips were amazing! Some really crunchy and some were nice and soft. I asked for tobasco and they brought me some home made chilli sauce. It had a slight indian style taste to it but it was delicious. A touch spicier and it would of been an absolute triumph in chili engineering! I love the fact that this place is run by a charity and the fact that the food was so good. I can't vouch for anything apart from the burger, but that's all you need to know about!

So good to see a small business work their way up. From a small van outside Temple Meads to now…read morerunning a full size restaurant in St Nicks! In the past few years my idea of a burger has been completely flipped, turned upside down! With the introduction of brioche buns and baconaise (what sweet sweet genius came up with that one) I have been outstanded. The location of Chomp is great, loads of parking around, especially if you know the tricks of the trade ;) it's a modern yet chilled interior which really really worked for me. The right light levels and music volume so you don't overhear other people's comments and you can spill and bit of food on yourself and no one will notice. That was a big bonus for me, especially if you sample their brilliant range of ciders, ales and lagers. Staff were very friendly, great waitress and chef was a friendly bloke! Prices were so reasonable, £10 for burger with fries and slaw (no idea what happened to Cole from coleslaw, poor bloke) and drinks were a fair price too. They also do promo nights where you can get burger, sides and a drink for £10 or something. They also do specials every now and again, the other night was a Stilton burger - sounded perfect. But for your first time you always have to go tradition, the house special. Your classic burger with only some onion rings on the side. Perfection. Would definitely recommend, I am really finding it hard to find bad places in Bristol lately, competition is tough but these guys have hit the nail on the head. Bye bye Gourmet burger Kitchen

Very cool interior - stripped back as you'd expect in a steak place. I love the simplicity of the menu - a few steaks, 2 burgers (3 if you count the veggie - which I never do) and a few classic cocktails, plus wine and beer. I went for my favourite cocktail - the classic old fashioned (shame they didn't have barrel aged, but hey that's just me being a pretentious d*ck). Perfectly mixed - a beautiful bourbon kick but not too overpowering, just the right amount of orange flavour and very refreshing. Starter was 3x black pudding beignets - and as a bit of a black pudding fiend, these sated my cravings very nicely indeed. Perfectly battered, not too heavy with a delicious garlic and chive mayo. Bliss. Having found out it was national burger day too late, I went for an 8oz fillet, with blue cheese sauce - obvs. The whole experience was world class. Steak was a perfect medium rare, with a beautiful char on the outside. The seasoning on the chips was exceptional. And the blue cheese sauce - oh man. Just phenomenal. Plus a delicious side of mushrooms and spinach. I couldn't resist hitting the bourbon tasting board - and I definitely don't regret it. 3 excellent drams, all of which had complex and very different flavours. A nice touch offering something a bit different to go with your steak (hic). The standout definitely being the Woodford Reserve Rye - mind blowingly delicious. The Bookers blew my tits off. 63.7%... WHAAAT. Accompanied by a 2/3 of the house IPA - perfect amount of hop and washed everything down nicely! Overall a superb experience and I will continue coming here at every possible opportunity when I'm in Bristol.

After walking around for 20-30 mins and getting a few rejections we found Graze, which from the outside looks way to modern for my taste. Anyways we got charcuterie as a starter with Aperol Spritz, which was delicious - really good meat! And nicely served! As a main cause we got a chicken roast and lamb chops, and a bottle of wine, they had a great wine card by the way! We both wanted to finish - but that wasn't possible - cause we also need room for a little dessert! It was a good evening! The service was really good, We loved the food, and the interior was very non British! (Win!) ;) I would have loved to try a Sunday roast at Graze! Next time for sure!

Because it was about 3pm by the time we got there, it was pretty quiet (only two other customers) but we quite liked that and despite being worried they might not be serving food since it was between lunch and dinner (and Valentines day which they were clearly getting ready for that evening) we were warmly welcomed and told we could sit anywhere. The whole place smelled like leather which I suppose might be off putting for some but I loved it. It was nice and bright with leather seating (hence the smell) and smart decor. We were brought a lunch menu as well as the a la carte and drinks. I decided to have a cocktail since we were officially on holiday now the interview was over ;) The cucumber collins (£6.50) was delicious! We also shared a 500ml carafe of pinot noir (£12) which was lovely. We ordered bread & olives (£3.50) to start which were very nice, I liked the addition of thyme to the butter. For our mains, Nik chose the burger which was tasty but a bit dry and could have had a bit more seasoning. The chips were fantastic! I opted for the duck leg confit with dauphinoise (£11.95) which was definitely the best choice - SO delicious and melt in the mouth duck with crispy skin. The jus was very tasty too and great for dipping Nik's chips! ;) I was surprised that Nik's burger cost more than my duck which was a decent size and mine definitely seemed better quality. £12.95 for a burger is pretty pricey too! When mine came I decided I needed some veg with it so ordered the winter greens which came quickly and smothered in butter. A bit too much really as I actually love kale & savoy cabbage (which is what came) and it was literally dripping in butter which wasn't needed and so not quite as healthy as expected but I enjoyed it all the same. Although, again it was quite expensive at £3.50 for a small bowl of cabbage. Considering how quiet the restaurant was (a few more customers had come in for drinks by the time we finished but no other diners), we had to sit with our empty plates for a VERY long time as the waitress was busy lighting candles and setting tables for dinner. She did seem to be the only member of staff at this point but we were ignored for a bit too long. Service was friendly throughout though and we soon got the bill and were thanked as we left. The toilets were clean and again, nicely decorated with nice touches like the lovely smelling White Company soap & hand lotion. We'd probably go back for another visit next time we're in Bristol.
