I decided to book a massage (very last minute) due to a stressful weekend. I called the Park Place location and was able to book 2 -60 minute massages. I had the pleasure of meeting with Angela while my BF met with Myshonta. For me, Angela was great! I wanted a combination of both a relaxation massage and a deep tissue massage. She delivered! I'm a very upfront person and informed her that I do not do well with chit chatting and she understood. I would definitely book her again! My boyfriend met with Myshonta and he raved about how she wasn't afraid to man handle him and get deep into his soreness.Being a guy who stands on his feet all day he tend to have back and feet soreness. She really was able to get in there and relieve the pressure that he was having. She even gave him some tips on stretching the muscles and things he can do at home to relieve some of his back pain. Based on his experience I would recommend anyone who has soreness or need some deep deep tissue work to book Myshonta. And if you're looking for a smooth relaxing but yet effective massage book Angela. I would definitely be making an appointment with Gould's Downtown or Poplar location so that we can truly enjoy a couples massage together in the same room. read more

Going in, Larricka asked me where I hurt the most, and I told her all over more than anywhere else. She found the perfect amount of pressure, coupled with just the right amount of heat in her stones and towels to work out kinks, aches and pain I didn't even know was there. It was obvious by her attention to detail, focusing on areas that elicited responses by me that she enjoy practicing her craft and treated it as an art. BEWARE! MANAGEMENT=BULLIES AND ARROGANT/INCOMPETENT STAFF CUT OFF THE MAJORITY OF MY HAIR (OVER A FOOT AND HALF) WHEN I ONLY WENT IN FOR A TRIM!!! If I could give 0 stars, I would. This is the worst customer service experience I have EVER had ANYWHERE. I tried booking an appointment with the main salon downstairs on a short notice and they recommended that I go upstairs and get my hair cut. I figured. I have a LOT of hair (past my hip), if they mess up my hair I would just go to fix it later at another salon. Boy I was wrong. One of the instructors cut my hair, while it wasn't a terrible experience, he left noticeable gaps in my hair where it was long, short and then long again. I went back asking if they could fix it and when I showed up, a student commented "oh yeah that's the girl who's hair ***(instructor) messed up on".. I then was led to another "master instructor" whose name starts with a J. SHE BUTCHERED MY HAIR. she cut my hair so jaggedly multiple instructors and students came by and looked in shock.. then when I finally worked up the nerve to say that my hair may be a little uneven, she gaslit me and told me I didn't know what I was talking about, she was very experienced and my hair was "already uneven".. which was CAUSED BY THE OTHER INSTRUCTOR.. then realized that she was unreasonable and too arrogant to see what I was referring to so I just agreed with her. She proceeded to continue to cut my hair. Shorter and shorter, one side and then the other in an attempt to make it "even". I asked her to stop cutting and I was satisfied and with thinning razor in my face (which she isn't supposed to use on dry long hair), she said "I can tell you don't like it so I'm not letting you leave my chair until you like it". With tears in my eye I asked her to stop, in which she just ignored. I left the building in tears and many students, instructors and admin staff looked at my hair in shock. A few people even insisted that the admin staff contact corporate. I went downstairs to the salon in tears and they were shocked to see my butchered hair. They asked what happened to your hair! In which I explained what happened. I said I don't care what you charge I need you to fix this asap. I go to pull my credit card to give to them and realized I was so frazzled that I ran out of the place without taking my phone. I refused to go back into the building and said I would rather leave the phone then ever go in there again. The front desk girl downstairs was so kind to go and grab my phone for me and insisted on contacting corporate for me. She called another salon to book me a haircut to fix my jagged hair... In all, more than A FOOT AND HALF of my hair was cut off of my head and more was razored off, which damaged the integrity of my hair. I have not had hair THIS SHORT in 20+ years! The ceo called me and said that my hair was already damaged anyway according to the staff (the staff actually continuously commented on how gorgeous and healthy my hair was despite being color treated, even if my hair was a hay bale WHICH IT WAS NOT, how does a foot and half of my hair just disappear).. I explained to him what happened and he just repeatedly and said "uh oh.. someone is getting into trouble.. you know they're scared to be called into the principal's office" like it was a joke and a huge ego boost to him. I said I am a very compassionate person and wouldn't want anyone to lose their jobs but this is sheer incompetence and negligence. The instructor had THINNING SHEARS IN MY FACE AND REFUSED TO LET ME OUT OF THE CHAIR.. I said I have no say on who they fire and I don't care." He then gaslit me and said.. well you said you're compassionate but you're fine with someone losing their job??? I tried to get the ceo to see my perspective of what happened in which he refused. I even went by the office to show him how terrible the result was and how disfigured I felt and he hid in the back while his staff with a pixi cut commented on how my hair looked "okay"... the ceo then called me and told me that he wasn't going to do anything to make up for the terrible incident and asked me why I would even want a haircut to fix the mistakes if I already felt like my hair was too short.. I asked him if someone shaved the middle of his head, would he want someone to fix it or leave as is? He then asked me if I had a lawyer and to have my lawyer call him and he can connect my lawyer with his lawyer. I asked him for his lawyers info so my lawyer can call him. And he teased me and mocked me and asked do you ACTUALLY have a lawyer (and laughed), and he said have your lawyer call me haha and I will explain to him what happened. I'm not sure how he can mansplain something to my attorney when he wasn't even there... I haven't said anything because I've been so distraught and traumatized by this situation that it compromised my mental and physical health. Do yourself a favor and avoid at all cost!! read more

Something to know is that they are teaching the students it is completely acceptable to cancel an hour before an appointment. They called me an hour before my appointment to tell me they had to cancel because the student didn't show up. When I asked if they would communicate how unprofessional it is to cancel on someone an hour before, the receptionist said, "She's following the rules. They are only required to give us 1 hour notice if they are not going to show up." The problem with not giving enough notice is that there was not enough time to find a replacement so they had to cancel my appointment. You would think this would be an important lesson for someone entering into the service industry, but apparently not at Gould's. read more

Today I had an amazing experience with Crys who did a fabulous cut and color melt/balayage. I am so thrilled with this hair it is truly a work of art. Angela was extremely nice and accommodating but had no idea this was a prenatal massage. This might fall on the front desk person and not the therapist but it definitely made me feel uncomfortable. This was my first prenatal massage and I filled out tons of paperwork detailing my pregnancy, things I wanted the therapist to focus on etc and it clearly was not seen or reviewed before my massage. That was very disappointing. Again, I'm not sure who this error falls on but I used to work in a similar environment and this would have been completely unacceptable period. When I told the therapist this was a prenatal she looked stunned and caught off guard. She even asked "this is a prenatal massage?? you are pregnant? How many weeks?" As she was looking at my belly to try and find a bump. I'm sure it wasn't meant to be rude because her tone did not come across that way but I wrote everything in my paperwork which should have been reviewed. I was extremely sick my first trimester and lost weight and did not have a noticeable bump so these comments really should just be avoided because it was insensitive and unprofessional. As far as the massage goes - maybe I could have spoken up more but I was already caught off guard and felt uncomfortable. There was hardly any pressure applied and I was not asked about it. It felt like back tracing and just rubbing over my back and arms. I felt like it did not do much at all. Don't get me wrong it was still very nice to lay on a heated table and have someone tend to you but not for the cost it was and what it was supposed to be. It started about 10-15 mins late because she had to go get the appropriate pillow for me and she had to ask some questions once I told her it was a prenatal massage. It ended 10 minutes early so I definitely did not get my full hour, maybe 40 mins total. I also only was on my left and right side and did not even get to lay on my back to get appropriate head, neck, traps massage I asked for because I hold a ton of tension there. Unfortunately it wasn't a great massage experience. I really hope this is not how all prenatal massages are but I did my research before going and it definitely doesn't seem like this is the norm and there are more positions and things that can be done for relaxation and pain relief during prenatal massage. Again, Angela was so nice and I'm sure if this was a different scenario completely or I wasn't pregnant and was able to get a deep tissue it would have been a better experience overall. read more

My doctor suggested that I start getting regular massages. I got one last week at another location and decided to schedule a massage and facial for today at noon at this location. However, I woke up this morning feeling pretty awful. I have a fever and a sore throat. As we all know, it's covid season so I didn't want to possibly bring COVID to the salon. I called at 950 and made the representative aware of my illness and the need to reschedule. She said that per their booking policy I would have to pay the full cost of the appointment. She stated, "when you booked you read online that the policy states that". I told her that I could just come in and possibly expose the salon to COVID but I wasn't going to pay almost $200 to sit at home. She put me on hold and the front desk manager came to the phone.. She states that per the policy they must charge me something because the system generates a bill. So she states they must charge me $25 for each service and that would total to $50. At this point I just say ok because I feel terrible and didn't want to be arguing all morning. After getting off the phone I go to the website and review their policy. They have a specific COVID policy that states, "If you are showing any symptoms of illness, you will be asked to reschedule." Why didn't they just offer to reschedule me? I'm pretty disappointed with the interaction and will definitely not schedule anything else with them due to this experience. read more

My hair was cut to perfection this morning at Gould's Academy. i explained what I wanted. My stylist asked the teacher some questions and the instructor showed her what to do a few times. It took about an hour and a half because I had a hard time explaining what I wanted. I didn't bring a picture. I suggest that if you want a particular style that you bing a photo. My stylist, Taylor, was careful and so gentle. I plan to go back. If you are in a hurry this is not your place, but if you are patient, Gould's Academy is a great bargain for a professional haircut. read more

I cannot say enough about this salon. The front desk was extremely friendly. They styled my hair and that of my grandmother. The stylists are students, but were able to wash and style the hair very quickly (about 30 minutes-depending on style and length of hair). You can't beat the price of getting a wash/ blow dry for around $15 (plus tip/ tax). There's plenty of parking, so you don't have to worry about that either. I definitely plan to return. read more

I walked into this facial thinking, you get what you pay for. Everyone knows this. But I must say, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of my facial. The products used and the overall result were what I have experienced in the real Gould's Salons and at other high end spas. This is a school, so the things that could have been deal breakers, weren't, because as I mentioned, I got a GREAT facial. Professionalism at check in~ eh. They are all students. (Check in girl informed me to give her a sec, and that I needed to do this and needed to fill out that. No please and thank yous. Forgivable offenses for this scenario only.) Atmosphere was as expected - crowded, lively, loud. The facial room was like a hospital room with 6 beds. They pulled a curtain around me and that was my space. BUT, I must say, the loud spa jams they blasted in over the speakers did help me to relax. Last point - my student facialist was again, not a seasoned pro. She put cold, slimy, hot, gooey, all the usual junk on my face, never warning me or giving me a heads up as to what was coming or what she was doing. That's ok. I got used to the facial surprises and was delighted with the end result. I paid $29 bux for this on a Groupon, but I think this facial is regularly $40. Even at that price, so worth it. Just look past all the buzz and minor inconveniences, and go close your eyes and enjoy. I will go back, even without a Groupon! read more

She asked her instructor for help a couple of times, and he was awesome at assisting her while still making sure I felt confident in her ability. My experience with the esthetics program at Goulds. When I toured Goulds, the teacher that I was introduced to that I was told was going to be my teacher was a platform makeup artist for Redken which was perfect because I wanted to be a makeup artist as well. On my first day of class, to my disappointment that was not my teacher. There was a new teacher, Mrs. Rawls, who did not specialize in what I was looking to do. So I gave it a chance and stayed. Throughout the week there were a number of frustrations that came with this teacher. She talked down to certain students including myself. She did not seem to know the Tennessee specific laws for certain things. Any question asked to her was replied with a condescending answer. On the last day of the first week, Mrs. Rawls started talking about professionalism in the salon. I myself have a sleeve tattoo and at the time I had gages in my ears. Mrs. Rawls states to the entire class, "Would you want someone working on you in the salon with holes in their ears and tattoos all over their arms, no I don't think so." So at the point I was so unhappy when I left every single day. I decided that this was not going to work out because of the disappointment with the teacher. I began crying and went to the office to explain to Mrs. Otto my concerns with the teacher and she played them down and acted like it wasn't a big deal what Mrs. Rawls had said and how she handled the class. I decided to leave. I was still charged $1300 for the 'kit' and 'first week's tuition" in which we did not learn a single thing and the teacher handled out a printed worksheet with the website "Mystical Realm" which seemed a little bizarre. The administration has no clue what they are doing and they are just out to get your money no matter what. HORRIBLE read more
