Finn McCool's Giant's Causeway Hostel / B&B

I thought this was just the coolest place. Perhaps we were lucky with timing, but the other people…read morestaying there were very polite. The price was unbeatable, and the location was perfect. My wife and I drove up to see Giant's Causeway (obviously), and stayed here for just one night. Worth every penny. I must say that it's a hostel, though, which means there's a common area and shared bathrooms. If you're okay with that, then this is the place for you!

It's a fantastic hostel next door to Giant's Causeway (two-minute walk). Staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating, and they provide great selection of snacks (pizza, lasagna etc.) to purchase for 3€, as well as varied beverages! Selection of hot breakfast included, free wifi, and free tea and coffee all day! Parking available for guests. Small but comfortable common room which connects to the glass patio area with a great view of the horizon for such a place. There were BBQ and tables by the outdoor patio. Since we got a place last minute, we stayed in the cabin (room of four which had electrical outlets and even a plug-in heater in case we were cold). It wasn't exactly the best of rooms, but the sheets were clean, crisp and fresh, which made the sleep and rest very comfortable. We shared a toilet located in the main building, but it wasn't a problem since the staff kept it very clean and stocked. It's a typical hostel -- cheap, communal and friendly, but also unusually intimate, which we greatly appreciated. Perhaps this would be an ideal place for solo travellers in the area.

We have just returned from a visit to Islay, and everything about The Lodge was perfect. Don is a…read morewonderful host, and The Lodge is very well located. Our room was clean, comfortable, and well-appointed. It was quiet and cozy, and we slept wonderfully. We loved visiting Islay and only wish we had been able to stay longer. Additionally, Don is very attentive to dietary restrictions and needs. He went way above and beyond in accommodating our need for a gluten-free breakfast. So, if you have food restrictions or allergies, do not hesitate to stay here. Just let Don know, and he'll take of the rest. We hope to return to Islay, and we will certainly return to The Lodge.

A plate full of cold cuts, etc are left in the fridge for breakfast. Two rooms are right on the front, harbor side. We had the room in back that overlooks a cute back courtyard and has a very nice, modern bathroom. The little Port Ellen market is a few doors down and the two restaurants that were open for dinner when we visited were within easy walking distance. Just around the corner, you'll find the Three Distilleries path, a walk to Laphroig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg with beautiful ocean views. It's also easy to catch a public bus to other points on the island...and we did have time for a visit to Bowmore, which was well worth it. Some people try to make it to all 8 distilleries on the island, but we were happy to visit four. We didn't meet our host Don in person, but the woman who was assisting him with keys, etc was friendly and helpful, and even made a phone call for us to get a restaurant reservation. Carol's taxi got us to and from the airport with ease. Our time in Islay was the highlight of our Scotland trip for both of us....and only one is a whiskey drinker. Hopefully we will be able to come back some time.

This nondescript semi-Georgian facade, one of the first in a long row of many similar looking…read moreresidences opposite a modest commercial harbour, hides a very comfortable, eclectically appointed reception area where you are greeted warmly and helpfully by the proprietor. Don't worry if you have lots of luggage - if you can make it down the first short hall to the LIFT (elevator) your heavy luggage is not problem! Be warned though, the elevator is small, the door closes very quickly behind you, and unlike elevators in the States, it does not optically sense the presence of a lagging leg or arm and keeps closing until you physically hit it to stop it. Our room was spacious, with a medium to large TV, a mini fridge, a tea/coffee set (including Aero brand hot chocolate packets - a nice touch), and a very handy multi plug surge protector. We had a room without a "sea view" which overlooked an alley and the back of adjacent houses, but this was no big deal to us. The breakfast was ample, delicious, and served by a very friendly hostess who chatted us up when we asked her for her opinion on local activities, etc. She was very kind and approachable, and the food was excellent. Special note - We accidentally left behind a child's violin when we left Port Rush. I arranged for a courier service to pick it up and deliver it to our next destination in Dublin, which they did. But the courier service picks up the items "as is" and does not put them in shipping boxes. When the violin arrived, I discovered the Avarest folks had not only printed out and affixed the shipping label I faxed to them, but went to the trouble of expertly wrapping the violin in cardboard and bubble wrap to avoid any damage. They went the extra mile, we got a good night sleep, and this B&B is highly recommended. Why not stay at a place run by really good people?
