I booked a special treat for my male friend, located inside The Maybourne Hotel. My first impression upon arrival, clean, opulent and luxurious. I booked my friend with Carlitos. My friend wanted a straight-razor shave and a haircut. He started off with a heavy beard and wanted it removed. He certainly didn't know what to expect. This old-fashioned barber shop was cozy and charming. The laid-back vibe was ever so chill. The services lasted 1 hour, and my friend was transformed. Carlitos did an amazing job, and my friend's response, "The best straight razor shave I've ever had." My friend loved his new look, and he looked very clean and handsome. Highly recommended for all the gents needing some TLC. Very pricey, but well worth it! Thank you, Carlitos, you did a phenomenal job! Extremely overpriced for a basic men's cut, that turned out just "okay" and nothing special. Very nice location, but didn't find much friendliness at all. Silent and awkward vibe. Weirdest part was that I arrived five minutes early for my haircut, which didn't begin until 25minutes after the scheduled time. And not one mention was made of this delay, not even a brief "sorry." Gornik (the owner) is aloof and off-putting at best. His greatest accomplishment in life was cutting Ronald Reagan's hair. If you meet him he'll remind you of it over and over again. It's probably where his holier-than-thou attitude comes from. It's sad he doesn't understand a very simple truth: the only customer that matters is the one he's cutting the hair of in that very moment. The warmth and luxury of an establishment is not determined by the marble and wood paneling but by the warmth of the people working there. This was a cold place. This an old school barber that just set-up in Palisades Village. They have served Beverly Hills for years. They are right on Sunset Blvd., so easy to find. I would never come back to this place. I tried their services several times and I always feel uncomfortable. Most of their staff is really rude. I got there on time and they had me waiting for almost 30 min and since I wasn't in a rush I didn't say a single word but I was the whole time thinking how they would react if I make them wait for 30 min. After the long wait the guy comes back from his break (I assume) and he starts reproaching me about being late, I was super confused and after telling him that I've been waiting for 30 minutes he realizes somebody in his team messed up the appointment time. He didn't apologize at all and said that now he wouldn't have time to do the whole thing (cut + shave). It looks like he was mad during my entire cut and he kept being very aggressive with the tools what made it a very unpleasant experience. I'm pretty sure they don't care at all. Because of their history and location they will continue doing great. Bottom line: Save your money and go somewhere else. This place doesn't offer a luxury service, only the price. read more

My barber changed the way I look at grooming and he's been the only person to touch my hair since 2008. Not that I was curious for a change, but his game is so far above his fellow barbers I was wondering how his services stacked up against world renowned shops. Turns out Gornik & Drucker really only has about 65 years of history on him. Their claims to fame are the stars they cut a long time ago, the powerful in Hollywood. Does history and fame make you a better barber. Maybe not, but I thought I'd see for myself. In LA for a wedding I did not get my customary haircut days before big events and flew in early. I called and made an appointment. It's at the Montage and it's well decorated, not flashy, but also not too rustic. Fully modern amenities. I did love the straight razor. I myself am not a hairy man, but on occasion will bust out the straight razor and disposable straight razor depending on the mood. To see these guys fly with the hone and strop is amazing, I am not nearly as comfortable, but probably because I do it 4 times a year instead of 10 times a day. Prices are ridiculous. The reason rich and powerful men, Presidents even came here is because they could afford it. In talking with William and Cesar I could see how much they had to offer and the services were nominally better than a good barber, which apparently is still 1 in 100. My consult was great, helpful, they immediately knew my barber was good, but that I'd also learned a few things and was more than just some walk up client. We blended my request with Cesar's suggestion as I could not give him too much freedom in consultation. My haircut was excellent quality. I got compliments...I always do, but not to take away from them it shows more how many bad barbers there are. I was glad to see the full service drying and washing available, but this place totally lacks products. Stocking a dozen products for grooming, washing and styling is unacceptable. I'm sure they are all quality as they stamp their name on them, but take a look around it's the 21st century. Dozens of companies are doing craft and quality creams, gels, pomade's, finishing sprays, etc. To pair a great cut with a glimpse of products does not give justice to the work you just did. I feel sorry for guys trying to recreate at home what they got in here. I'm used to the hot towel, straight razor shave and bay rum, but was expecting the end massage machine. You come here for an experience, because I've gotten the sickest fade or tightest cut elsewhere, but nowhere has this history. My thoughts on why it's not 5 star is: At what point do you no longer rest on your laurels and a name alone? When do you embrace the future? I can say that there are too many bad barbers that it puts the good one's out of reach and on a pedestal and in Hollywood's lifestyles it just perpetuates the disparities. read more

The place is hidden on the lower level of the Montage and might feel a little highbrow but trust me this is a place fit for all and you should definitely spoil yourself at least ones by visiting this establishment. First off let me say: JC is the guy to see. I first met JC at his old place of employment, Shorty's barber shop. The guy gave me the best haircut I've ever had. Super detail oriented. Really knows his stuff. He left Shorty's shortly after that, and luckily he messaged me through Yelp letting me know he was now at Gornik & Drucker. I actually live in Vegas, and make trips to LA for work and to see friends. I time my trips to LA to be when I know I'll need a haircut so that I don't have to go to anyone else besides JC. Thats how good the guy is. As for the shop itself, its very nice. Very classic, upper class, old school feel. Everyone there is cool and seems to be of a high skill level. I cannot speak for the quality of the shave itself, because I never got that far. With all of the stellar reviews and self-aggrandizing PR on their website, the Gornik & Drucker experience was certainly memorable: it demonstrated precisely how NOT to treat customers. I was excited to arrange shaves for my groomsmen during my recent wedding weekend. It was easy enough to make phone reservations. Unfortunately, the person that took my reservation over the phone wrote down the wrong date on the calendar. When we showed up for the shaves, the owner was there and identified the error. However, rather than be helpful and apologetic, he basically blew me off and said that he couldn't help me. He didn't offer any solution, or more importantly, any concern. He just said, "Oh, you must have made the appointment with the guy that screws up the scheduling." Actually I am happy that he turned us away at the door with his creepy flat affect, because his service was certainly not worth the audacious prices. I have had many straight razor shaves before, and the fellas at Gornik & Drucker should realize that at some point they need to stop living off the glory of primping Ronald Regan forty years ago. I first found this place through a Groupon about a year or two ago, for Craig the Barber. Craig specializes in beards and writes for style mags and his client list is pretty impressive. The shop itself is small with only 2 chairs, and very "old boy" and has been around since at least the 40's. Ronald Regan used to get his hair cut there. What I really like about Craig is that he doesn't just give you the same haircut he gives everyone else, he actually looks at the shape of your face, head, etc., and suggests what he would like to do. I had been paying $20 for a haircut before, and now I totally see why my $65 haircut from Craig is totally worth it. He gives a great straight razor shave too! You won't find this place on the street, as it is in the Montage hotel. If you go there, it will look a bit familiar if you watch Entourage, as they filmed some of the finale in the shop! read more

There is a lot of living history right there in the basement barber shop of the Montage Hotel. I'm waiting for Mr. William Gornik to write his memoirs! There are things a man will tell his barber that he won't even share with his shrink. This business dates back to 1936 at another BH location, Rodeo Dr.? It was the hang-out for Ben "Bugsy" Siegal, who dreamed-up modern Las Vegas there, and may have had a private phone installed, for placing high zoot bets. Gable, Cooper, Bogart, Wasserman, Harry Cohn, various Warner Bros., JFK with Peter Lawford all came there. Gornik, (Reagan's personal barber) moved the shop to the Beverly Wilshire in the 60's, during Warren Beatty's celebrated occupancy of the fabled penthouse. My late father recalled a big, black 1966 convertible Lincoln, full of the most beautiful ladies, pulling into valet parking. WB was at the wheel, in more ways than one! Mr. Gornik has opened another shop in Caruso's luxe, new Palisades Village. These shops are a true metrosexual paradise. Pricey, but worth it. read more

Worst customer service a salon could possibly offer. Very rude staff, that does not shy away from overcharging customers over the posted rates. When given feedback, they act like they are overly busy and they can't help. Some of the barbers are talented, but their urge to take advantage of customers makes it not worth a visit. read more

I got a straight-razor shave from Craig and the entire experience was sublime. The care he took was incredible and the actual shaving was remarkably pleasant. I left Gornik & Drucker with my skin feeling softer and looking healthier than ever before. My wife thought the same thing. It was worth every penny and then some. My experience with Gornik & Drucker is limited strictly to online sales, since I've never been to California. Anyway...I ordered a jar of their shaving cream, and never did receive an order confirmation. After a week I emailed them to inquire about this, and never received a response. My order did arrive eventually...two months later. TWO. MONTHS. The icing on the cake was that the jar had clearly been opened and used, containing just 7 ounces of cream, not 8 ounces as indicated on the labeling. Included were samples of shampoo and cocoa butter, and a handwritten apology written by I'm not sure whom, mentioning a family illness as the reason for the delay. Normally I'd give one star, but the only saving grace was the handwritten letter. I'm not as cynical as a lot of people, so I gave the benefit of the doubt. I don't see myself ever doing business again with G&K, but you never know. In the highly unlikely event that I'm in Beverly Hills, I may just swing by for a shave; maybe even pick up an UNUSED jar of shaving cream while I'm at it. read more

This review is going to have two parts. The first being about Chris the person who took care of me while I was there and the second will be about whomever is in charge of gift certificates and receptionist services which I will assume is part of the hotel. First Chris was excellent, in fact the whole staff from the owner to the lovely woman who gave me a manicure were very thoughtful and very gifted in their craft. I never felt as pampered as I did in their care. I had gone in for a Facial, manicure and haircut. From the first steamed towel Chris had me relaxed, he explained everything he was doing and took care in doing it. The lovely manicurist started work on my hands and she was very kind and made my hands feel like a million dollars. After the S.R.F was finished we started in on the haircut and shampoo process. The owner, manicurist, and Chis started talking about local food and the best places to go etc and the owner handed me a glass of scotch, yes you can get a nice glass as part of the relaxation process! Everything was rounded out with the cut. Chris took more time than any barber I had ever been too. He asked questions about what I liked and made recommendations. He is quite good and I highly recommend him. Now the process of getting me here was rather difficult. My little old lady of a a mother came down to the hotel to get a gift certificate and the young man who she was speaking with said the woman who makes up the certificates was not there and it was best if my mother came back because having the woman make up the certificate would be much more of a gift because it was process with fancy paper and writing etc. So my mother told the young man she would be back the next day in the late morning. He said that would be good. My mother returned the next day and the woman was not there and no one knew when she would be in. After a bit of running around they finally came back with a note card explaining it was a "gift certificate" now I don't care what it is written on, my issue is making an old woman shlep from the Valley twice, Valet twice when this could have been taken care of the first time around with the same note card, especially after being told the woman would be there. That and I was given a Holiday grab bag with a card that said to go to the website and register to see what I won, it was a razor and when I tried to claim it on my visit I was told they were all out of them that they were all gone. Not exactly sure how that is fair. Bottom line deal with someone in the shop directly, not the hotel or the office! read more

Exactly what I was looking for... a barbershop that can give a great haircut. Craig was excellent- he took time to understand what I wanted, and gave it to me. I got a great looking haircut, which I hadn't been able to find since my arrival in L.A. three years ago. The decor and atmosphere are great. Had an appointment with Craig a couple weeks ago for a haircut and shave. First off, the experience is what a man's haircut and shave should be like. He talked to me about my work life, personal life, style and life to get an idea what hair style(s) would suit them. Then talked to me about the shape of my head and face which made me realize i actually have a fuller square face not a round (chubby) face. He gave me the best haircut I've ever had, I've never had as many compliments as i have in the last couple weeks. However i haven't been able to style my hair the way he did which is why I'm going back tomorrow. The next part of the appointment was a shave. I never shave with a razor now because razor burn is impossible to avoid. It was the best shave I've ever had, the hot towels, warm lather, and old school manly smells of the products made me feel like my grandpas back their day. I workout and do a lot of "manly" things but I left feeling like a true man after the experience. I 1,000,000% recommend that a man gets the experience at least once in their life, it's worth every penny! read more
