Slate is definitely one of those stores. I stopped in on Christmas Eve just to browse around and I wish I could have bought everything in the place! It is a pretty hipster little store, and everything inside would be both useful to have in your home and serve as a conversation starter with guests. The items are unique, interesting, and high quality. There are kitchen gadgets, bar cart fixings, home decor items, greeting cards, jewelry...the list goes on. It's a great store and fits well with the Church Street aesthetic.

The store is well designed with beautiful paintings and rugs, throws so soft I wanted to cuddle with it right there and then, the beds coordinating blankets seemed to compliment the wood and design of the bed in a fascinating way that made me wonder a little bit about home decor (another thing I love other than food!) After comparing prices, we found that Burlington Furniture was quoting us $2,000 more than a California company, even with shipping and assembly included. Still, we wanted to support a local business, so we returned to Burlington Furniture, and they agreed to match the competitor's price. We were given an estimated delivery date of 4/30. When we followed up, we were surprised to hear that our furniture wouldn't arrive for nearly two more months. We understand that delays happen, but we were frustrated by the lack of communication. I called the manager to get clarity and was told that the employee who gave us that update was no longer with the company. She promised to follow up--which she did--but she didn't provide a new delivery timeline. Instead, she told us the order wasn't actually delayed and that deliveries typically arrive two weeks after the estimated date. It's unclear why the original estimate wouldn't account for that window, and what's worse, I never heard back from the manager again. Ultimately, the delivery company brought our furniture just five days after the estimated date, which we appreciated--but the poor communication and lack of accountability from Burlington Furniture left a bad impression. We're happy with the product, but extremely disappointed in the service. Sadly, this experience has cost Burlington Furniture a customer.

As I'd just bought a home, I needed window treatments, as there were none and I didn't want to live in a fishbowl, with the outside world having full access (especially when I was in the shower!). I wanted to be able to see my picturesque views while still maintaining privacy, mostly at night. Bill was referred to me by a good friend whose homes have all been decorated with his skill. The store is cozy and the staff are great. Kathi greeted me warmly and answered all my questions, showed me multiple offerings: what kinds of blinds did I want, how did I want them to work, etc. I chose the kind that close either up or down so you can have partial views when you want, but utmost privacy. I made an appointment for Bill to come and give me a free consultation at my home. He helped me determine the best treatments for my windows, including colors. He could have pushed for the most expensive, but he did not. Pleased with the offerings and estimate, I paid my down payment and waited eagerly for my new blinds to arrive in 6-8 weeks (due to the pandemic). Once they arrived, Bill had all of the blinds installed in no time. He did all three floors in under 2.5 hours. He made sure I understood how they worked and answered any questions I had before leaving. I am beyond thrilled with the work that he did. I would call him in a heartbeat were I to ever need his services again.

I brought my antique lamp, that stopped working, into this shop. It had just recently been totally…read morerewired, including adding a switch and plug by another business that no longer did repairs. The young woman at the counter was pleasant and she spent a little time checking things a few things out. She said she was unable to find the issue, and said she would need to bring it back to the bench to look at it. In all honesty, she did briefly mention a $45 bench fee. She said to come back within 20 minutes and she should have it fixed by then. That surprised me because she said she didn't know what was wrong with it. When I came back to pick it up, the owner (?) was at the counter and charged me $48+. I asked what was wrong with it, and she said it was a bad plug. I was shocked by the price, and queried, " You're going to charge me $48 for a $3 plug and work that would've taken about five minutes?" Her reply was curt and somewhat rude. She told me that they had to cover their bills somehow. To me, this was terrible customer service. It is my theory that the young lady at the counter could tell right away that it was just the plug when she examined it. I felt scammed. I would've happily bought a plug from them and done it myself if I only I had known. It would have been good customer service if she would have worked with me, but this woman was unwilling to budge. I tried communicating with them through email, asking if we could come to some sort of compromised bill. No one ever responded to any of my emails. Poor customer service doesn't pay in the end, but I had to!! $48 was a lot of money out of my very limited income.
