We stayed at the Gordon Beach Inn for our anniversary and we had a fabulous time. The hotel staff was so friendly and helpful. We had a great suite with a jacuzzi tub and an outdoor deck. hubby and I had the most relaxing time here. However, arrived Friday early evening, walked in room found there was in odor, we seems we couldn't get rid of after spraying smell goods, to find the sheets and blankets had not been changed! hair that didn't belong to us and dirty! Yuk! Creeped me out to say the least... did notify front desk. Next morning and they fixed the issue immediately! NoT a warm welcoming knowing I slept in someone else's filth! Cute, quiet inn with great fireplace to gather around or "grandma's" basement to play board games in. It's an unplug and rewind kind of place with your girlfriends. Have a sense of humor when you stay here and chat with fellow guest. Reminds me of a inn you will see in a movie. read more

Stayed here last night while passing through New Buffalo. We stayed in room 20, which was called out as "abysmal", in a google review. It's a fine room. It does the trick. Bed works and mattress wasn't terrible, bathroom is no frills but provided what was needed- a shower, toilet, and sink. I desperately need air circulation when I sleep and that's were this room went a little sideways. The ceiling fan was one speed and felt like a baby bird was breathing on me- there was no wind. We opened two windows for cross circulation which helped a little but caused bad allergies overnight/today. Customer service was pretty good. read more

Old fashion attractiveness is what one gets at this property. Clean rooms and hospitable staff and dog friendly. We did our morning workout under the shade of their many trees. Did not use the attached restaurant--closed at the time. I would come back. read more

Understand that you're staying in a guest room in someone's old house, not a resort hotel and not a chain place, and you'll like it fine. The worn wood floors, heavy oak doors, and humble, mismatched old furniture are part of the charm. On the rainy fall weekend I came, their rates were lower than the nearby Baymont and Holiday Inn Express. The place was quiet and cozy. The lobby is quite nice and inviting. I stayed in room 2. It had a fridge and microwave, individual-room temperature control (which some of these old inns don't have), no TV (ok with me, and helped insure against noise from adjoining rooms), ceiling fan, and a little outside porch. The bathroom was very clean, though the baseboards and corners of the room itself were dusty and needed attention. Bed was average/ok, not luxury but not awful. Pillows were thin and could have been nicer. The innkeepers on duty as well as the people I emailed at various times before coming were all helpful and accommodating. My only serious gripe was that the wifi was nonexistent on my end of the building. They claim they're getting another access point. read more

The hospitality was HORRIBLE!!! I have stayed here several times over the last 7 years. I've never been disrespected or treated the way our group was treated. We told the Inn keeper that we were arriving late. Received an email about late arrivals that stated the lower level and lobby closes at 11 pm. WE/OUR GROUP NEVER gathered in either place. Unloaded our vehicles quietly as possible with the time being 9:45 pm WITH Inn keeper present. (have to walk through the lobby to get to any room) Not leaving out rooms the rest of the evening. HARESSED and targeted the rest of the stay stating her were not talking at a reasonable level. Inn Keeper/ Management were very unprofessional more than ONE group was present at the Inn. We were singled out!! Following our arrival there was another group that checked in after us that was loudly talking then proceeded to the basement to well after 11 pm. Dogs running freely and barking into the evening AFTER quiet time. So if you stay up past 11 pm you can NOT talk or you will be harassed and targeted for the remainder of your stay. The EVENING INN keeper was rude and extremely confrontational and argumentative as we returned from dinner one evening in reminding us of the Quiet time rules. Other parties on the 2nd level were loud too and never addressed following our complaint of the rowdiness. In spite of this being a older Inn and noise travels, simply talking among each other at a reasonable level was NOT accepted. Our group was from all over the country coming together to catch up. We DID NOT violate any quiet times rules. WE WILL NEVER STAY HERE AGAINA!!!!!! Nor will we recommend this place to anyone again!!! Not soundproof what so ever!!! Do not stay here. We had a room...WITH NO WINDOW! It is out dated and grungy. There is no temp control in the room, it was super hot. There was no inn keeper so we had to pick up and drop off keys at the sister cottage down the road. There was a TV, a tiny nine inch TV. In a room that charges $130 a night OFF SEASON! I picked this room because they advertise a two person jacuzzi tub. It is a large crusty two person tub. To quote my boyfriend "There is no way I'm sitting bare assed in that thing!" That pretty much sums it up. DO not stay here. I wouldn't call it a dump if they didn't overcharge me, but I got JACKED! so dump it is. read more

This place is not too great. I paid $120 for a room with a "patio shared with Timothy's restaurant." (the restaurant in the inn) I checked into my room and opened the door to the patio. The door hit a chair from one of the restaurant tables...so it was more like "You have a door with a window that allows you to stare at people while they eat dinner, and you can open the door and scare the crap out of them if you so choose." Not exactly honest advertising, if you ask me. Fortunately, I was in town for a wedding and was out of my room except to sleep, so it wasn't an issue...but other people who book this room (Room #1) may be let down. The rumors about the small TV are true...but who stays in a hotel to watch TV? I was able to drunkenly watch That 70s Show one night and Sportscenter the next night before passing out with no issues. The $120 sounds like a ripoff for what you get, but some friends stayed at the Fairfield Inn and paid $130. If you know the Fairfield Inn, you know that rooms there generally don't cost $130. This was during the summer so I have to assume that everything in the area is overpriced. However, based off what they told me, the Fairfield Inn provided better accommodations. After showering and drying off with a white towel, I noticed the next day that they replaced the used towels with green ones. Little details like that leave this place lacking. The Gordon Beach Inn is quaint and whatever, but it's not exactly comfortable. If you want to feel old timey, go for it. Otherwise, I'd hit up a national chain in the area. read more

I recently stayed at Gordon Beach for 4 nights and 5 days. It is like a B&B without the charm and hospitality. Service was really poor and the accommodations are not comfortable. They don't seem to be very helpful to new people not familiar with the area. When I asked about restaurants nearby since I didn't know the area at all, the receptionist told me she didn't know of any nearby. The air conditioning cannot be controlled from the room, even though there is a thermostat. For two night the room was freezing. I was told that they would turn off the air conditioning during the day but that it may be turned back on at night. I was also told that the only restaurant nearby was Timothy's but that was an upscale restaurant. So, I imagined prices of above $50 or even $100 per dish. When I looked up the menu on line I saw that the prices were reasonably priced. Needless to say, I felt offended by that comment. The beach is not even that close as there is about a 15min walk to it and it is very difficult to find. There are many trees and I needed to go through a path that looked as if I was going into someone's house. There aren't any signs labeled and I had to ask someone to help me find the path to the beach. The beach wasn't even that nice and it was dirty. Also, people let their dogs run freely and I had a couple of big ones come running at me. I was really scared but thankfully the dogs didn't bite me. I would never return to this place and/or this area again. The Inn seems to have lots of potential to be a charming place only if hospitality would be greatly improved. It would have been nice to get a little tour and/or get information about the history of the place, the town, and informed recommendations of restaurants and activities to do. I was just given a key, a beach flag, which would cost $50 if I lost it, and I was told most restaurants were closed on a Tuesday afternoon. Horrible service!! read more

This is a beautiful old-time beach country inn similar to some I remember from my childhood. The wood decor downstairs is lovely, and you can enjoy the continental breakfast on the porch that extends along the back. The grounds are full of well attended flower plants, and the person at the front desk is friendly and helpful. Do you really need a TV in the room when you have access to a gorgeous private beach? We didn't think so. If we planned a longer stay, maybe we'd want more, such as a refrig in the room. But for a weekend, it was fine. The beach is a bit of a walk, but it's a lovely walk. The rooms are small but comfortable, with fine windows. We were disappointed that we couldn't rent for a single night on the weekend. But Having to rent the room for another night meant we could stay all day and enjoy the beach on our departure day. read more

The place is charming and while not your usual best western style hotel, this place has an authentic vintage flair. The staff was friendly and unpretentious. Just enjoyed a wonderful Winter weekend at the Gordon Inn. Beautiful cozy lobby with leather couches and a roaring fire awaited us. Only a couple of rooms occupied so we all gathered there and became new best friends as the snow fell outside. Enjoyed a nice fireside dinner at the Grove without even having to step outside. Special kudos to Rene who greeted us and was so gracious and friendly and accommodating to our requests. read more

Do not stay here! They try to scam you! I booked a reservation for 3 nights at $110 per night, through their own website. I gave my credit card information and was given a receipt charging me at that rate, along with a confirmation email stating the same. A week later, 7 days before my stay, I got a confirmation call from them and they advised the rates were bow $145 per night! I complained and was directed to contact the manager of their sister location, the Lakeside Inn. I told the manager of my situation, and she was extremely rude and trying to deny the validity of what I was saying (even though I printed and saved all my confirmation and emails with them). The manager finally admitted that the company they use to book online reservations, must have screwed up "again" and she refused to honor the rate I was confirmed at. When I told her by not honoring the advertised price was basically a "bait and switch" tactic and possibly illegal, she became even less helpful. It sounded as if the "manager" was an older lady with no concept of the Internet or online booking practices. It also seemed she my be one of the owners, or otherwise affiliated, because no business would ever allow such a rude, incompetent, and useless person work for them if they ever wanted repeat customers. I ultimately cancelled my reservation, and have gone on a crusade to warn others of my experience. Through my efforts, I now see that my decision not to stay at this place was a good one. We decided to stay at a big hotel chain instead. This way we know they will honor their price and have at least minimal customer service skills, and a room with a window! (see previous reviews). Bottom line. This place seems to be on it's last leg after reading other reviews. Avoid aggravation and stay elsewhere. read more

I was worried about staying here based on the reviews, but during the summer, this was the only place available in the area, so we took a chance. We were pleasantly surprised. 3.5 stars might be more appropriate, but given the context of the area and the type of place it is, I'm rating up. First, it is not for people who prefer chains that are new and "cookie'cutter". The Gordon Beach Inn is nearly 100 years old, with wood floors and the original faucets, doors, etc., which I like - I don't mind a patina on the brass; too me that is preferable to new chrome. There are beautiful art deco-style stencils in the halls and in the rooms. The room and linens were very clean, with big old windows that actiually opened, althought the air conditioning worked fine too. Only 3 blocks from a beautiful beach. The front desk people were attentive and friendly. There's a beautiful great room and porches you can sit in; the rooms are smallish. And it's nice to have Timothy's, a high-end restaurant, right in the same building. The only con for me was the shower went super scalding hot suddenly, but that is probably due to an old plumbing system. Otherwise, Gordon Inn was satisfactory in terms of comfort, and really charming in terms of decor with lots of authentic wood, copper front desk, and odd little nooks, but not overdone with too much Victorain excess. read more

We were given room number one. No one over the phone bothered to tell us that this room shares two walls with the VERY noisy restaurant. After complaining we were moved to another outdated room. The rooms are old and terribly furnished, the bed is very uncomfortable, and bathrooms are uncomfortable. This inn is way overpriced and offers no more than a simple, cheap, hotel which costs less than half the price. Disappointing and unrecommended. read more

Only stay here if you have absolutely no where else you can stay. The rooms are tiny and very sparse - one towel per guest, soap and toilet paper are the only amenities. There are no mirrors on the walls. The TV we had was 9 inches in size. There are no coffee makers in the rooms and the front desk staff cannot seem to keep the one pot they put in the lobby full. Asking for tea is out of the question because "they don't have any". No breakfast is offered. The front bar had no bartender. The restaurant downstairs can be very noisy late. The owners just do not seem to give a hoot for the guest. They could totally step it up a notch but they refuse. So even though they try to offer the atmosphere of an "old time inn", they don't offer "old fashion comfort or hospitality." Just a room. read more

Timothy restaurant is very overpriced and the food was average at best. There are better places to eat. The room was clean and the atmosphere quiet. Did not care for the two night stay minimum but they relented and gave us a room they could not otherwise sell for one night at $137. Pretty area and the beach a few blocks away is nice. Not a big deal as you are seeking seclusion if you stay here but the TV is very old and small and I'm not sure about wireless...we got there after normal hours so there was no one to ask but there was no mention of wireless access in any brochure or anything. read more

We love Union Pier, but would never stay here again. We expected rustic (although it was more grungy-rustic than charming-rustic), but once in our room, the door to the hallway didn't close completely (like, a door in a cabin), which didn't feel very safe. The bed was too soft to be comfortable (although I know that's subjective). The shower didn't have a non-skid mat or rug, but I guess the bathroom was so tiny, you couldn't actually fall down in there anyway. I wasn't expecting a blow dryer (so I wasn't disappointed), but there was no shampoo/conditioner, which should be standard for travelers. There was nowhere to put our suitcases to take out what we needed. Like others said, the TV was tiny, but that's fine - of course we weren't there to watch TV. We were there for a wedding at a nearby hotel and came a day early, but the person at the front desk wouldn't give us a late checkout the day of the wedding (we were leaving right after the wedding). He said someone had reserved that exact room. If someone actually did reserve that exact room overlooking the "beautiful" parking lot, it was because all the others are worse. My biggest complaint and reason for this review - which I don't normally write - was how rude the guy at the front desk was when we tried to figure out how to get ready for a 4:30 wedding at 10:00 in the morning. He just said, "Checkout is at 11:00." He finally offered another room to change clothes in later that day, but would charge us a full night just to change clothes. We chose to us a friend's room. Union Pier is so beautiful and fun, but look for other options if staying overnight. read more
